    Hey! I just posted a new video with 27 External SSDs specifically for GAMING here: th-cam.com/video/oJwFFH9RAL8/w-d-xo.html
    I'm working on a full update video to this one, but that will take a little bit longer still. Stay tuned!

      Thank you. If you can also please include your opinion on buying a cheaper internal SSD and then buying an exclosure for it, that would be very helpful as well.

      I have to disagree with that, she definitely did not cover everything here, especially important things about the SSD types of Multi-Layer SSDs: SLC, MLC, TLC, QLC, and PLC.

      It may disappoint you, but it is not. There are several more TB3 SSD drives on the market that other YT channels have tested before. This video also does not cover the different sizes of caches built into the different drives. This and the kind of chip technology that is used make the important differences in performance.

    PS Thank you for highlighting the different bars of the graph as you were talking about them, made following the video much easier.

    Nicely done. Have both the Crucial X8, 1 TB and the Samsung T5, 500 MB both work well. I use the Crucial for Time Machine and the T5 to clone my iMac. Speaking of heat, I bought ADATA’s latest se800 and within 2 weeks locked up solid and no longer recognized by my Mac. Back it went...

    Another contributing factor leaning towards SSD - unlike traditional HD, there is no need to do de-fragmentation on SSD. In fact, I believe de-frag is not recommended for SSD!!
    There is another usage for storage that also tilt advantage to SSD. If you are a researcher & have tons of research data (GB) for many different types and topics (e.g. biotech), having a portable high speed SSD is an invaluable asset when you have to attend live meetings and pulling/searching data out from archive.

    Thank you for doing this review, it really helped me decide on which drive to get.

  • @Gregregorovich
    @Gregregorovich 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Whilst they probably will be thermal throttling, the significant slow down will be due to them running out of SLC (single layer cell) cache rather than the flash getting too hot. Whilst flash does work best at ~50°C, if it's getting that hot to touch then it may well be thermal throttling as well. I would expect the SSDs to be TLC (triple layer cell), where write speed is ~150-200 MB/s, so once the SLC cache gets full, it will then end up just writing direct to the TLC and as such slow down. The main performance factor will be how the drive (the controller on the drive) handles what happens when the cache gets full, and whether it keeps trying to clear it despite the TLC being occupied writing more data.
    Side note - the cooler an SSD is, the worse its life; the way the company knows how many write cycles to failure the SSD has is due to the phenomenon that by decreasing the temperature by ~10°C roughly halves the life of the flash.
    But unless you're using the SSD as a cache drive or constantly copying and moving videos across from it, chances are you won't need to worry about the life of an SSD as the capacity will probably end up stop being sensible to use before it dies - like the 32 GB SSDs that were released around the start of the "SSD age"
    My source for this is pcper / PC Perspective, which can be found on youtube and at pcper.com

    You should mention that SanDisk is Western Digital. It is just sold under that former name because of brand recognition. But it is in fact Western Digital. You mentioned Lacie being Seagate so you also need to mention SanDisk being Western Digital

      @A-L:
      True (@ that Sandisk is Western-Digital, and that it's only sold under that former-name because of brand-recognition), but to be even-more accurate, Sandisk was bought by Western-Digital, and Lacie-Porsche [division [of Porsche]] was bought by Seagate :-(
