Lars drumming is lacking on all these songs, but I kind of give him some slack because of his age. Im a drummer in my 40’s and I’m having trouble keeping up so I could imagine being nearly 60 would be rough.

Metallica's experimental phase was Re-Load and St. Anger...both of which contain few songs that I enjoy. They returned to their roots a bit with Death Magnetic and even more with Hardwired to Self Destruct. Considering that 72 Seasons might be the final Metallica album ever, I think they have come full circle in their musical journey producing rocking music. We should all be thankful.

Being 60 years old, 40 years into their career, they're not going to reinvent the wheel. There's only so many riffs and chords on the guitar. They've changed numerous times, from Justice to the Black album, Load era, St. Anger, and now modern Metallica. They dont need to experiment. I love the new songs. 72 Season will be awesome!

Respectfully, IMO, James' voice has gotten better with age. Don't get me wrong, I love the early days, but James clearly sounded like a teenager in the first two albums. By Justice and Black album, he voice matured. But the last few albums, and this one in particular, James sounds very powerful. It just hits different, and I'm loving it!

This one is my favorite as well. I little longer than it needed to be. BUT, I have figured out their mentality…and it goes along with the evolution of their songwriting. James is a RIFF MACHINE, and he’s going through the iterations of major stepping stones in the song. So we get 1,2,3,4+ versions of a riff. They have done that in each song except for Lux. Lux is the only one short enough to get solid airplay to hook new listeners and then they get pulled into the rabbit hole that is a twisting turning Metallica song. It’s going to be a good two shows in Arlington, TX. You moved too soon, Hef!!

@@ShadowKiller571 I agree. But when you have a band that you have been with their entire career or your entire listening to music experience (I’ve listened for 32 years), it’s less about me justifying what they are doing. It IS me understanding what they are doing from a songwriting/production angle. They are going to do whatever the hell they want, and they have always said they don’t write for the fans. I’m a lifer, so I’m going to listen anyway. And no one has to justify what they listen to to me or vice versa. 🤘🏼

As a songwriter myself, I try to do something completely or almost completely different with each new song, and while I'm happy to have that desire to always experiment, it can make my music come across as erratic in style/voice when listened to as a collective, which I'm personally fine with, but it can be off-putting to a lot of people, and sometimes I wonder what my "style" really is, or if I'll ever find the happy medium between experimentation and refinement. In the end, I choose to trust the process, and know in my heart that if I'm happy with the song, that's a blessing, and if others are happy with it, too, it's a miracle. In short, yes, I'd like Metallica to experiment a bit more, but I just can't help but smile every time I hear something new from them, and in the end, that's what I'm grateful for.

They experimented on Load/Reload and St. Anger, and got tons of back lash for it... I believe they took experimenting too far in different genres even.... What I only hate is that they didn't put out many albums after the Black album... so they kinda narrowed the chances a bit to put out more quality music. I liked DM very much, Hirdwired was really good, but the gaps between the albums were hhuge, like 6 7 years on average....

Lars' basic beats somehow give Metallica that special feel of a garage part time band. But on the other hand their songwriting and riffs make them so proficient in their craft. They have the most recognizable sound in metal music that makes you rock out to it, and it is what really makes them a band for the ages.

As far a Metallica recycling riffs is concerned, after 40 years of making music there is only so many riffs to create. Also, from what I've gathered from all these new songs so far is that it is an homage to all their influence and different sounds. So that's why the riffs are "recycled". That's the whole point of the song and album. It's genius actually.

Metallica have experimented more than just about any band in history. From the concept-type-album Justice, to the heavily produced Black Album, to the two Load session albums, to St. Anger, to S&M playing live with a Symphony, to making a 3D movie, to the now infamous Lulu album with Lou Reed. If any…and I mean ANY band has paid their due and earned the right to just do what they do best (which they still do better than anyone in the game) it’s freaking Metallica. They’re literally the least “play it safe” band in existence. Ya feel me? 😉✌️

But other bands have spent their lives never repeating themselves. Like Linkin Park (indeed) and Muse, to quote the most mainstream.

This might be the most Metallica-sounding Metallica song ever and it's definitely my favorite song released from the new album so far. It might be a little "formulaic", but it's the best formula from any artist ever, at least in my opinion. I think they went through their experimental phase with St. Anger (which I love) and Lulu (not that anyone really considers that a Metallica record) and got their heads back on straight with the help of Rick Ruben on Death Magnetic...and its been all gravy since. I think James' voice sounds as good, if not better than Justice/Black albums, and WAY better than Kill 'Em All. I'm a singer and guitar player (wonder where that influence came from) and I can only hope that my chops are as strong as Papa Het's when I'm 60, totally defying age and overuse. Every song is wonderful if you listen to them more than once. I often wonder if reactors give up on a song after just one listen or do they listen again while driving.

This song rips! Love it and I am an “Elitist” 😂 Sure the “formula” is there (reminds me a little of the title track to Hardwired..) but what else do they have to prove? Their experimental era started with Load and ended with St. Anger (Bob Rock era?). Seems like when Trujillo came aboard they returned to their heavier sound. Man, they’re killing it and they’re in their 60s. Fucking phenomenal!

I am amazed at the lack of depth of the reactors at times. Artists by definition are always trying to experiment while maintaining their core signature. If you want them to always create the first 4 albumns then go listen to them. I am enjoying the journey Metallica has taken me on from the early 80's to present. They are raw, powerful, and have exposed their inner souls. That is very scary for an artist. They are the definition of metal/hard rock. Musically they are far more refined, mature, and know how to compose brilliance. This albumn is another one for the ages and just makes me smile.

AC/DC, SLAYER, NIRVANA, Ramones, Breaking Benjamin, to name a few. & yet they ALL sound kicks ass. Even with that same formula 🤘🏼 To just as long they keep giving us great music. Idc if they use the same formula. 🤘🏼 Take care & be Safe 😎🤘🏼

Yeah when I heard the main riff kick in I thought to myself “this really has a Moth Into Flame mixed with Spit Out The Bone vibe to it”
As someone who loved the Hardwired album I’m not really complaining
I wouldn’t say James still sounds the same, his voice has very much changed throughout the years but I like it. A lot of people say “ah it’s shot, he can’t sing like he used to” but imo it’s better. While I am a fan of growly vocals something about James’ melodic yet gravely tone is just 👌🏻👌🏻
IMO bands can and should experiment whenever they feel like it. Whether or not the audience is receptive to it is a different story but experimentation is always healthy and helps keep things fresh and exciting
My favorite single has to be Lux Æterna. It’s hype and a bit chaotic and I really dig it

I think Metallica has tried evolving/experimenting more than any other metal band. Load and Reload were quite different and a shock to many people. St. Anger... well that is that but since then they've tried to get back to their older style but they can't quite recapture it.

word on the street in that 72 seasons is a homage to all their previous albums, if you listen carefully to all the songs each song has a similar riff, similar lyrics, even calling out some previous songs by name and picking certain key lyrics from previous songs and incorporating them into this new album. 72 season is meant to be the first 18 years of your life and how it defines you for the rest of your life. You should listen to some other songs on the album like Room of Mirrors, Screaming Suicide, Shadow Follow, Lux Eterna instant classics.

I think at this point as a die hard fan of Metallica, I'm just happy they still make new music, and play together. They're in their 60's now. Try to make a top 10 list of albums recorded by people in their 60's, ya know? There will be no new Master of Puppets, and that's ok. That was almost 40 years ago and will always be there for us to listen to. It's not changing my life or anything, but I embrace it for what it is and it makes me happy.

I Agree with you 100 percent on this song, My Issue with people who shit on this upcoming album and previous albums is that they are expecting Metallica to be something they just aren't anymore, everyone wants the next AJFA or Master of Puppets album and when they dont get it they just focus on all the negative, because yes all these are songs are relatively simple and like you said definitely recycled riffs. Metallica have absolutely nothing to prove anymore. They are 60+ and still releasing extremely fun and energetic songs that is always a joy to listen too. When people start breaking down every minor detail on these songs, explaining why its not good, thats when you lose me. People need to lighten the fuck up and JUST ENJOY METALLICA WHY THEY ARE STILL HERE MAKING KICK ASS MUSIC !!

You mentioned is Metallica passed experimenting. I would say yes..load and reload were experimenting, St Anger was a terrible experiment, and now this sounds more inline with traditional Metallica. I think a lot of Metallica fans are happy the band has stopped experimenting and is returning to its ways. This song seems to merge sounds from the first few records and even the load and re load Era. I think it's really good, it's somehow heavy and upbeat

Alex! Since you're checking out new Metallica, you should also check out a band that started around the same time with them. Overkill dropped a new album on the same day and it is ridiculous. Same genre but Overkill just kept closer to the thrash sound they started with. One song in particular is Fever and I'm sure you'll dig it. Wouldn't hurt to check out their discography too.

IMHO Alex, yes, it's great to have the freedom to go off and experiment (Rush being a prime example), but for the most part, once a band finds that "winning formula"... if it ain't broke... don't fix it (LOL). Although you may be right about sounding a bit like "Moth Into Flame", there are differences, and if I may... they are sounding much more polished as time goes on. I believe a lot of bands got the well-deserved break they needed once COVID hit, Metallica included. Great review, Brother... LOVE IT !!!
