    Just a little tip. I took both advertising/marketing and journalism programs in College. Journalism grad, one year off from advertising grad. Anyways, I learned twice that there's a bit of a trick in contacting people in some cases. You're actually supposed to avoid exclamation marks if you have any hope of getting a response. Neurologically, it makes the sender look more desperate, almost as if they're the type who would constantly nag at the person they get a response from. Little things like this seem unimportant, but there are many ways in which our brains connect to certain visual cues. That's just a little suggestion for ya. Take with a grain of salt or ignore it, just wanted to give some insight!

    @LSuperSonicQ I think the next step to take in the search for the game is to check the manuals for every sega game released around/after 1996 for a name

      that's going to take quite a bit of time, though. a date for when that ad aired or when the contest began would make that a lot easier

      We can look at the names on manuals and use process of elimination, since credits usually aren't in manuals there won't be many names.

      Wouldn't it be a Sega-developed game? That would narrow down the options.

      The contest finished on March 18 1996 (source: the damn video), and it has a pic of a Genesis game as the "game you might make". Sega only published like 8 games after that for the Genesis so I'd look at the credits section in those, although from the ones I went through there wasn't anything special so you may have to dig through the QA and "special thanks" sections.
      Note that sometimes the winners of these things aren't always the friendliest- the winner of a contest where you got paid 25k if you had a "lucky" Vectorman cartridge was in jail for "CON AGGRAV BATTERY W/DEADLY WEAPN OR RESULT GBH/DEATH" among others

      Larry Bundy Jr I think the winner got a 3d sega genesis racing game, & had better graphics than Virtua Racing. It would've used a special engine with more capabilities than the SVP chip. It would've been called "G.P. Master Blitz", & would've been released at Christmas 1996.

    I remember very clearly when this commercial was airing on television. Ironically it rarely came on during the actual fox kids shows, it much more commonly aired during the Ricky Lake afternoon talkshow, that followed Power Rangers and Animaniacs. I remember trying to capture it on VHS tape for days, and having to watch this boring "adult show" I really didn't care about everyday for over a week. You see, at the time I was drawing my own video game in my sketchpad and I thought this was my chance to make it into a reality. This really took me back.
    I must admit though, perusing this comment section it's kind of funny that something that is such a vivid memory to me, is so obscure and considered myth and Legend to a lot of you.

    I spent the day looking over the manuals of the Genesis games that would be the likely candidates, and I have found nothing in the "special thanks" sections: all the thanks are to Sega affiliated people. However, in the Vectorman 2 manual, in the thanks section there is listed a Theresa Woodberry. She is not connected to Sega in any way, so she may be who we are looking for. The only problem is that because she would have been a child when this contest was running, she may have a different last name now if she is married.

    I was actually in the right age range to watch Fox Kids in '96, although admittedly, I don't remember this contest. It does remind me of a similar contest from the early '00s, that was in conjunction with a soda (I'm fairly certain it was Dr Pepper); in which the winner would make a cameo appearance in a Gamecube game. I've always wondered who won that and what game they cameoed in, as it feels like it could be a spiritual successor to the Chris Houlihan room.

    This reminds me of a contest Lunchables had where you could pitch your own game idea and according to the contest, a chosen winner will have their game become reality. It happened sometime in 2010, though I don't know if any game ever came out of it. There isn't much about it online, it seems like it's been completely forgotten it lost. 1996 seems pretty late into the genesis's life, and we can assume the selection and development process of that game may have lapsed into 1997. Also, they didnt specifically state that it was a genesis game, only that it was a "sega" game while they showed a genesis cover, so perhaps it could have been a Saturn game. Were there any games released after that date on those consoles that had a connection to Fox kids or McDonald's? It seems more likely that they'd put their name on a licenced game connected to them above another random sega game. Furthermore, the ad also expressly states that they'd be sent to the Sega Studio in San Francisco, so they game they'd be in would likely be a game made by that particular studio. Maybe we can do a sort of top to bottom search by looking through game manuals that fit this criteria? If it was a game connected to Sega itself it was likely a pretty high profile game.
    Just some ideas

    • @marissagillespie1500
      @marissagillespie1500 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      An amendum:
      I feel like a total looser for doing this, but just for fun I decided to check the manuals for every post-March 1996 (as thats when the contest concluded) genesis and saturn game that was published or developed directly by Sega to see if it mentions this contest or a winner, but none of them did. Many of them mentioned special thanks, but I don't think they would list the winner of a contest like this under a simple special thanks tab. At least they would have given them a "winner of the contest" title.
      A Saturn game from June of 1996 called "Baku Baku Animal" does mention some people called "the Baku Den" in the credits separately from developers and testers and lists some American names, perhaps this is the contest winner? It looked a little suspicious to me when I saw it so maybe, but maybe not.
      Or maybe the contest winner would have had their name go with Sonic Xtreme, which was in development during the time frame this contest was being held (developed from around 1994 and originally planned for a Christmas relase in 1996, just enough time after this contest for it to still be relevant). The game was also being developed by the Sega Technical Institue in Palo Alto, CA, which is in the San Francisco bay area.
      Given this time frame being before that game was cancelled and being comfortably before the game's scheduled release in Christmas 1996, this would have given them enough time to get the winners input on some less important details in the game's development before it was stalled and cancelled. Also, a high profile game like this is probably the reason the particular game they were helping with wasn't said, as that would cause a lot of needless hype around the contest. So due to the fact that I didn't see any evidence of other Sega games have a contest winners name on it and the time frame this was going on, it may be reasonable to guess that the game that the kid got to give input on was the canceled Sonic Xtreme, leading to a case where this lost media is connected to another piece of lost media.
      Just speculation, but I needed to waste an hour or two on an excersise like this. I'm sure I look like a total nerd right now

    It's funny seeing this video, because it reminded me of a contest I entered for Donkey Kong Country. They were apparently holding a contest for character design on the newest Kong and I entered it, my Kong had a rocket launcher for an arm that they could use as an attack and as a double jump via the explosion. I remember being super pissed seeing Tiny Kong as the new character because of how lame they seemed.
    I just did a google search of the contest after watching this video and cannot find anything on it. So now I am wondering if I was just tripping balls the entire time?

    I also just wanted to say, at the time Vectorman came out (a game used in the advert) the Sega Genesis was past its prime. The commercial seems to indicate the credit will go in a Sega Genesis game, as shown via the box art. It DOES show Bug! for Sega Saturn, but... who knows. Anyways, check manuals from games post-Vectorman. There can't be THAT many to begin with.

  • @nekomarulupin
    @nekomarulupin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Theory: The sweepstakes seems to be pushing Vectorman pretty hard, showing it throughout the commercial, and offering it as a prize. Is it possible that the game that the winner got to see created was Vectorman 2? If anyone has a copy of the manual or can pull up the credits for either game, it might give us a possible winner.
    Keep in mind the winner was sent to Sega of America headquarters, rather than Sega of Japan. That also narrows down the options of what game the winner got his name published in. Also the sweepstakes was held in 1996, and the Sega Saturn and Genesis were discontinued in 1998. Its unlikely the Sega of America team was working on anything Dreamcast related until around 1998.
    I think Vectorman 2 would be a good place to start. The game was released in November 1996, developed by an American studio associated with Sega of America, and is the direct sequel to Vectorman, which was heavily featured in the Sweepstakes. BUG! TOO would also be a good place to start, since it the original was featured in the commercial, was released December 1996, and was even developed in house at Sega.

  • @Johnnybsknees
    @Johnnybsknees 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I am the person who won this contest. My name is John Bishop, from Andalusia, AL. They flew me and my dad to Sega headquarters in San Francisco where I got to play test Vectorman and BUG! for Sega Saturn on which I was credited for being a play tester. I also received a Saturn, Genesis and Game Gear with 30 games. We also had a party at McDonald's where we recorded a commercial that aired in the region. The game was never made. It was meant to be a 2d side scroller similar to streets of rage/double dragon but with extended combos and special moves similar to Mortal Kombat. We contacted the studio several times and they were very elusive about why the game was never made. Eventually we just let it go but this was very disappointing and still irks me to this day. If you have any more questions I'd be happy to answer. I was just reflecting on this and am amazed to see that people were curious about it.
    This is so wild to me that you made a video about this!! Haha I don't know why I never looked into this before. I never thought people would be so curious about it.

    Hey there! I might post about it on the Lost Media forums, but I have an extremely obscure piece of "lost" media. Probably about 6-7 years ago, I was at my grandparents house and my parents had some random home diy type show on in the background of us getting ready in the morning. My sister was having my dad fix her hair in the room and then the people on the show start talking about how easy it was to make this weird rice pillow. Then, some person on the side says "It's so easy, it pumps it all the way up from DIY, to D-I-E! Everybody!" Everyone there just looked at her weird and then continued like it didn't happen. Since I wasn't in the room when that happened, I've always wanted to see it because I couldn't even write this without laughing at it. Please tell me if you can help. If you need any more information, I can give you as much help as I can. I love Lost Media so so so much. That's why I love this channel. Please let me know if you can help me see this video. I want it so bad.

    I love lost media and find it very interesting I actually have a lost media story myself that I been looking for it's been forever and I just don't know what I should look up to try and find it everything I have tried doesn't work, basically when i was super young there was this movie my mom put on randomly from on demand I believe it was some kind of halloween special mainly because of the fact I remember there being a zombie in it with a black and white stripped shirt on and a knife through his head (another reminder yes i'm pretty sure it was a kids movie) and they sang i can't remember the song at all they may have not even singed in general I also believe there was an owl or some type of bird that was with this little girl which I think had brown hair
    i just really wanna find this so I can be at peace i think about it randomly in the middle of the night which leads me to go on long searches which i never get anything out of

    This reminds me of a simaler thing Nickelodeon did. I remember when I was younger watching episodes about kappa Mikey I saw a contest for veiwers to submit an idea to Nickelodeon in the hopes of getting their cartoon made. Come to think of it I don't remember hearing anything about the results. I think I saw the add 2-3 times though so maybe nothing came out of it

    I actually remember seeing ads for this contest in the 90s. Always wondered what came of it. Having worked in TV for more than a decade now, I’m sure promoters and advertisers wouldn’t know what became of the winners because their job is just to set these things up, not necessarily facilitate them. I guess we’ll just have to read every Sega manual in existence until we find some mention.

  • @supersmashmaster43

    90's and early 2000's sweepstakes always seemed so much better than what you have today. They always gave the winner a shit ton of cash and a lot of expensive goodies on the side.

    Wait, hold up, when did they choose the winner of the contest exactly? The tour must have been held not long after that! So they should be credited in a game that was late in development at that point, as they wouldn't likely announce their still secret projects to some kid that walks in. Meaning the game would be released in '96 or early '97. Which games are this? Is this on the American Sega Genesis? This narrows the search for a game down quite a bit, right? Should be developed in-house and released in 1996/early 1997 in the states.
    Furthermore, there must have been some public relations-guy/gal from SEGA involved with this, maybe he/she has a LinkedIn too? Two more possible leads we really have to consider!

    Here’s a tip: McDonald’s ad agency in the ‘90s was Leo Burnett. I recommend searching for the same terms as you did previously but include “McDonald’s” and “Leo Burnett”. You are bound to find someone. They had a huge team staffed fo that account and they did all of their partnership placements as the lead agency of record. I feel like this would be more fruitful than waiting on good ol Lee to finally use his Instagram 😂 anyway, thanks for your amazing hunting and content! I love your channel!

    Something that might also be worth looking into is any games released around the time of the end of the contest up until 2-ish years afterwards. Worst case scenario is that the game itself got the plug pulled on it, and thus something that never came to fruition.

    One of the big problems is this was an American contest, so it is assumed Sega HQ was Sega of America, who didn't actually make their own games. The phrase "crank out a brand new Sega Video Game" leads me to believe it's not a arcade port. It would also be assumed that it was a game released in 1996, but after April (as the contest winner was Drawn March 18th). So that leaves up with 1 Genesis Game (Vector Man 2 [Released Nov 1996]) and 3 Sega Saturn Games (Three Dirty Dwarves [Released Sept. 27, 1996], Mr. Bones [Released Oct 18th, 1996], and NBA Action [Released June 1996]). All those dates are for the NA release. I am leaning more towards the Saturn games, as a Saturn was one of the prizes the Grand Prize winner would get (as the other winners would only get a Sega Genesis). Now just a matter of finding manuals and crossing referencing names to see if they appear in other Special Thanks, and then whittle the list down to those one off names.

  • @cvboot
    @cvboot 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    ok, so to find the manual that refernces this we have some clues:
    -games that were made from march 1996 and beyond
    -made by sega, sonic team or sega technical institute
    at least is something

    • @cvboot
      @cvboot 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      looks like there arent a lot of sega games that released in the genesis in 96, the problem is that maybe that game is a saturn game

    • @efreeteater2270
      @efreeteater2270 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even if it is Saturn, I think this isn't too bad of an idea. It would almost definitely be a game released in North America, and it looks like that's only about 30 Sega developed games for Saturn + the few Genesis titles so late in the system's life. I guess it could potentially be Dreamcast too, but I kind of doubt that. Now of course if we also include games published by Sega, this increases the numbers a bit.

    • @cvboot

    This video is awesome. I use to work at a donation site & loved reading old magazines from the 90’s that were donated, I’m 25 so I remember the second half of the era vaguely. I was at work one day & there was a stack of them. I came across an ad for the movie space jam and the contest was that one lucky winner would be selected to meet Michael Jordan & all that good stuff. I looked for the winner one night but couldn’t find anything significant. Anyone remember that? I think it was Energizer the battery company that did it. Have a good one everybody!

    I always wondered what happened with this! I remember telling my mom my elaborate game design ideas and thankfully she was trying to tell me "don't count your chickens before they hatch, you're probably not going to win." In retrospect, of COURSE it would just be a studio tour and getting your name in the credits. The idea of developing a full-fledged retail game on the whims of some random 10-year-old is ludicrous. On the other hand, I'm now good enough at game programming that I could actually create my original game idea...
