      Did it work because I have a 89 gmc c1500 and the cable I think was touching the manifold and burned it along with the other smaller wire and it lost complete power to everything

    Great camera work and descriptions. Thank you. I have an 87 chevy pickup. I am putting in a new battery and see an extra wire dangling off the positive wire. I am guessing it it the wire that goes to the back of your alternator, and acts as a ground? You called it a "fuseable link".

    I’m gonna try this with my el Camino in the morning. I lost all power in it. It won’t start or even act like it wants to and the only thing that works is the radio. I have no lights. I replaced the battery first because I had it tested and it was shot. It cranked twice after that but than stopped again. Put a new alternator on it with the same outcome. Hopefully this will be the puzzle piece I’ve been looking for.

    Starting maybe 1997 GM opted for that whimsical positive cable mounting which is brutal on a side post battery. I bought a k1500 Sub 3 years because the guy had just put a new Napa engine in it and let it go for $1500 which for me a great deal. However those connections on that positive side are continual hell. There is a Delco cable replacement ACDelco Professional Battery Cables 88861300 that combines both positive ends into 1 connector. These can be found for around $40. The Duralast solution should also work but video guy did not elaborate exactly on how he made that connector sandwich so my approach would be to opt to a NEW BOLT that is shorter but same thread size/type. Since there are 2 positive cables by the time you buy both at AZ, you may as well have got them in the Delco set.

    • @WalterCombsLCSW
      @WalterCombsLCSW  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great input. If you have a link to that double cable, I’m sure someone would find that very helpful. N

    • @kevingthompson14
      @kevingthompson14 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WalterCombsLCSW You can copy this = ACDelco Professional Battery Cables 88861300 = into a google search and see who has it cheapest in your area. Also Ebay & Amazon. I saw the positive set at Amazon for I think around $30. I never understood why Gm loves to run their cables up against the exhaust manifold. Even a twist tie works for that.

      @@kevingthompson14 Thats nice! Not to pricey either. I guess If I need to do this again on this car or another I have an option that does not include rigging things to work, but replacing things with OEM stuff. Thanks.

    Having a similar issue with my Hummer H2. The battery cable is about 1/4" off the header exhaust system I had installed. I think the heat from the header tube has caused the battery cable to corrode internally. When the vehicle won't start, I wiggle the cable near that spot and it will start. The insulation around the cable isn't burned, but has automotive heat tape on it. You think I should just replace the cable and wrap heat tape, or reroute, kind of like you did? I found an OEM cable at amazon for a decent price and won't be using the splice method you used.

    • @WalterCombsLCSW
      @WalterCombsLCSW  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Threedog1963
      Hope you have success with your repair. To be sure/certain you could slice into the cable to see if there is any corrosion inside the wire.
      If you can safely reroute the new cable away from the heat source that might be your best long term fix.
      Getting an OEM replacement is smart work too. Good luck 👍🍀

    can you please give me a link or something for the complete wiring cables. I have the same setup and I need to change out all the cables positive and negative, battery to starter, battery to alternator, battery to fuse box and thats all if I'm correct. • @WalterCombsLCSW
      @WalterCombsLCSW  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes after driving it somewhere I would come out and it would not start. One time when I was new to the vehicle I noddled with the car for almost 2 hours. I got so angry I finally gave up and slammed the hood and door hard. I came back as the tow truck arrived and when we put the key in the free the steering wheel he cranked it all the way and the truck started. It never quit in the middle of a drive. just sometimes would not start.

      Not that I could tell. Sometimes it would not start and later it would. Left me stranded a couple times. I did eventually change out the starter and I could tell a difference in cranking power from the old starter and the new starter.

    • @WalterCombsLCSW
      @WalterCombsLCSW  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like what mine was doing before the repair. If you mean this is happening after the repair... yikes! Start with the easy and double check the tightness of the connections. Then check the posts that connect to the starter to make sure you dont have a defective starter. Then check every wire to make sure nothing is grounding out. Good luck.

    Could it melt fuse block

    • @WalterCombsLCSW
      @WalterCombsLCSW  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ChevyGod Gonzalez it might be able too. But this cable went straight from the battery to the starter Solenoid. Could be if you melt a fuse block or blow a large number of primary fuses there is a grounding issue somewhere further down the line. Good luck 👍 this might not be the final answer you are looking for. Frustrating I know.
