I have it attached directly to the spool, I do a uni knot and then put a drop of super glue on it to secure it. I spooled this reel with 300 yards of 20lb spectra power pro line, which ran me about $40. Most everybody up here still tends to use mono, so the braid prices are outragious. Thank you, Danny
nice review and nice reel avet is a great reel company they make reels for fishermen like this one magnets in reels has been around for a while here on the texas coast we put the magnets in our reels our self by using expoxy to glue metal washers in then putting rare earth magnets on them. usally on the left sideplate. oh and here at bob haul i see avets reels all the time
Good choice on the SX i tend to use it much more than my MXL. To answer your question, neither of them are left handed reels, i recorded these videos on my macbook pro and for some reason in inverted the videos.
I have owned Accurate and AVET reels. I have never had a problem with AVET reels, I couldn't wait to sell or trade my Accurate reels. Quite a few long range guys are getting rid of their accurate as well. The Raw power the 5.3/1 SX gives is unreal. My favorite live bait reel, great for snook, redfish, kingfish, dolphin, sailfish. Excellent casting reel.
first, cool review! i have the same reel and also liked it, only issue i had was that i also have non-mc avets, and when grabbing say, my mxj and casting i forgot there was no mc and birdnest.. my other comment is about the knob on the gear side of the reel, this is a drag preset knob (should only be adjusted while reel is in "free" or you can misalign some things) maxing out this knob should give you 9lbs drag at strike, loose give you less etc. so carefull if u get bit with no drag pressure!
Thats really more about the rod than the reel, but I do use it for live bate on a 13 foot surf casting rod and it seems to do just fine. Thank you, Danny
It depends, where do you plan on fishing? Off the shore, a pier, of a boat? Where you are fishing from is like 90% of your determining factor for choosing a rod.
serious answer... its all about the name and marketing. if Van Stall slapped their name on the exact same avet reel they could sell if for 5 times the price that avet dose, but because avet dosent have as much creditability yet they have to keep their prices lower. also, avet prides them selves on producing a high quality affordable reel. Thank you, Danny
@nellsonisrad for a bridge an a pier, id actually buy a surf rod, thats what ive been using lately and its worked great. you can get out past everybody else, and you have more room to work the fish with a longer rod. as for shark fishing, i have an avet MXL on a Shimano Travili jigging rod for sharks and it works great. its got enough flex so you can cast it pretty well, and with the contour on the rods grip you can get a great grip on it. Thank you, Danny
I have found that i can cast further with mono on this reel, I currently have it on a 12ft surf rod, and the extra stretch from the mono when I'm casting seems to give me a little more range. Thank you, Danny
all the people i know that have gotten reels from charkbait have found something wrong with the reel wether it's the drag being super loud or a cosmetic problem
I would take a look at the Lamiglas tropic pro jigging rods, I've seen and heard good things about them. If you have a good local tackle shop id go up there and go feel some rods. Its very difficult to order a rod off the internet.
@MrDanthefisherman1 it depends on the rod im using, if im using a surf rod ill put a shock mono ldeader on it, but if its on a trolling rod or anything under 7 foot ill just go strait braid. Danny
@MrJohnnyrace thank you very much, the positive feed back means allot. where is that dealer in Florida if you dont mind me asking? I just recently moved to St. Augustine Fl, and ive been looking for a really nice tackle shop. Thank you, Danny
@danngree Im in the US at the moment, From the UK originally and you just done these reels at home. Picking two of the up this week, They are indeed a thing of beauty! Great review, This helped to make my mind up. Thanks!
@MrJohnnyrace The T REX is a beast of a reel, i got a chance to play with one that a guy had at the dock a couple of weeks back and it was just unreal. when you get that video up id love to see it and learn some more about it. Thank you, Danny
@MrJohnnyrace I have a couple of rods I can review now if youd like to see it. and I've been talking to a local tackle shop about letting me review some of their reels. Id also like to do a couple of videos on rigging and what tackle to use where. Thank you, Danny
nice video, awesome product. i owned three of those and a accurate reel, those reels blow the accurate away, money wise and maintenance wise. unbelievable. :)
The mc feature will make you lose casting distance. After getting a avet sx 6/4 I went on and purchased the raptor edition took it out on my same phoenix rod and thought it was broke. Tore it completely down relubed it (penn blue grease for gears and side plates and reelx everything else) and still same thing. Their mc is too strong. Traded a homie for the accurate boss fury. Always better to self magg reels; did it to my penn jigmaster and 4/0. However I have baitcasters that I will never magg: my old school penns, shimano tld 15/30 and 20/40, trinidad but its junk, and of course my sx 6/4. Just my opinion and experience. By the way my sx with my choice of lube spooled with 50# braid on a 7 foot 'tiger rod' with 6 ounce weight and my thumb I can almost spool it with a good cast;) Tight lines and bottoms up!!!
Informative videos! I haven't used lever drags before, so this question is little silly; when you cast it out and wanted to reel up any slack, would you have to do that in strike position? Or could you reel it up in free pool (clicker off obviously)? Thanks!
@danngree hi danny, just bought avet MXl for my off shore fishing this october 2011.. after watching your videos, feel its really worth it to buy.. many thanks for the info :)
have you caught many fish on your sx or mxl? I am getting a mxl mc tomorrow for Christmas and I am excited, but i already own a 50w from avet and i love it
@27bravo19 If you have the money for it, i would go for a MXL 2 speed, but if oyur looking to save some cash im sure you could more than get by with the two speed SX.
ok i need a opinion! consering buying shimano thunnus! 12000 or the avet he has i fish with bunker and ells mostly for striped bass blue i use a 11' rods 2-8 oz whats gna get a more distance from shore?
@MrJohnnyrace ill have to give him a call when im in the market for a new reel, im thinking about buying another SX in the near future. Thank you, Danny
Hi, how do these reels handle the sand etc when surf fishing? I heard most lever drag reels cant be used for surf fishing because sand gets inside of them and messes things up. Tony

. Thank you for your review and a very good clear video.

hell yes, braid all the way!! power pro is beast
They do make left handed models, I just happen to have right handed ones.
I have found that i can cast further with mono on this reel, I currently have it on a 12ft surf rod, and the extra stretch from the mono when I'm casting seems to give me a little more range.

The single speed reel has a 26" per crank and the 2 speed has 29" per crank.
just got an Avet sx raptor for $325 on craiglists, beats paying almost $500 after tax, also i have a MXL mc too. sweet reels.
I fish a short top shot most of the time. But I mainly do live bait fishing
all the people i know that have gotten reels from charkbait have found something wrong with the reel wether it's the drag being super loud or a cosmetic problem

@evertrules24 i usually use a 13ft surf rod with mono line for my surf rod.
It doesn't look like you put backup mono on that reel
wow
@liza542 you can cast hella far with a surface iron
Informative videos! I haven't used lever drags before, so this question is little silly; when you cast it out and wanted to reel up any slack, would you have to do that in strike position? Or could you reel it up in free pool (clicker off obviously)? Thanks!
I know it’s a little late but put it in strike 😂

my cast control is called a thumb.
how is the castability with the braid? does it cast better or like mono on that reel?
Good review brother!
@MrJohnnyrace ill have to give him a call when im in the market for a new reel, im thinking about buying another SX in the near future.
Thank you,
Danny
salve, posso avere un link dove poter comprare avet sx mc cast 5,3 ?
grazie
Do you fish straight braid or with a mono top shot/flourcarbon
9 lbs at strike, 14 lbs at full
what about the anti reverse dog?
Hi, how do these reels handle the sand etc when surf fishing? I heard most lever drag reels cant be used for surf fishing because sand gets inside of them and messes things up. Tony
have you ever caught a bull red or good sized shark on it?
how for can you cast with it.
What size rod do you use for the surf with that reel?
Yet someone else that has no idea how a mag break works.
why avet when you can use accurate~~~ =P
This is a lefty reel.
Avet are normal reel with lower drag then Accurate. So don't expect a miracle from it. you just get what you paid for.
Fuggin googans thinkin they know how to poach on my reels
