- We discuss the short history of the Honda CRX, a car that helped to define the future of FWD hot hatches. We drive and discuss what makes this car unique and yet sad. While there have been better Hondas, this car has the staying power along with the NSX, Integra Type R, and S2000. There are a few aside from the VW Rabbit, and Golf that generated so much excitement.
The Honda CR-X (styled in some markets as Honda CRX), originally launched as the Honda Ballade Sports CR-X in Japan, is a front-wheel-drive sport compact car manufactured by Honda between 1983 and 1991. It was replaced by the Honda CR-X del Sol for the 1992 model year. Although there are many supposed definitions for the acronym CR-X, the most widely accepted is "Civic Renaissance Experimental".
In the US, the CRX was marketed as an economy sport Kammback, with room for two passengers and small rear seats only for the Japanese models. The European-spec car received a ZC 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp) engine and a 2+2 seating arrangement. Redesigned in 1988 and produced until 1991, the CRX was popular for its performance, nimble handling, and good fuel economy. Honda's 1992 CRX del Sol was marketed as a CR-X in some markets.
The Honda CRX was a model based on the Civic. The Honda CRX was one of the most popular cars produced by Honda during its initial release into the North American market.
The Honda CRX was released at a time when the 1973 oil crisis was still fresh on a lot of people’s minds. Although it was pretty obvious that Honda had come up with a winning formula for success when it designed the original Honda CRX, the company continued to push the boundaries in subsequent years to improve upon the Honda CRX.
I love this car. Have had 3 of them over the years. I honestly do not know why Honda does not make this again.
I had grown up in domestic cars. I finally purchased by 1st used car in 1990. The first car that caught my attention in the showroom was a white Honda 1987 CRX. I sat in it- that’s all it took. That car was genius. I purchased another white CRX HF 1989 3 years later. Have not left Honda since. And I only drive manual.
An Integra, 2 RSXs, and a CR-Z later, I was able to get one of the 1st 500 2023 A-Spec manual Acura Integras in the U.S. in May 2022. Love it. It’s the largest car I’ve driven- not thrilled about 4 doors, and missing the rear windshield wiper (silly, I know). Performance, control, and the pure joy of driving another masterpiece from Honda is more than enough!
Had to give up my beloved polar white ‘90 Si when i started having a family. Another good reason to pull out!

LOL The HONDA CRX actually pulled out of you, because THE HONDA CRX didn't practice safe sex, and then, the HONDA CRX still wanted to be with you, then the HONDA CRX ran out of gas, which is impossibe, because THE HONDA CRX will still be around after all your aspirations and dreams. (love you just joking)
@@Teknakill You make a valid point, my friend 😂 😂 😂
@@SimirJohnson much love
The CRX got an MPG that was very close to today’s hybrid cars. It was originally known as the Honda Civic CRX. It even looked like a smaller version of the Honda Civic of those two generations
The CRX's fuel economy with 40 year old technology proves that hybrids are hogwash. They were getting 50-60 mpg. I wish Honda would put full technology into fuel economy into today's combustion engines.
I had a Honda CRX in high school and college. When I first drove that car I knew it was something special. It was a very sad day when I had to get rid of that car. I now have a Honda Civic Type R and love it. I can see and appreciate the improvements Honda made in the 30+ years which is pretty amazing. With all that said, I think the closest we got to a Honda CRX spiritual successor is the Hyundai Veloster N. Too bad those cars are no longer being made.
What an extraordinary car it was.
I bought a 2nd gen 1988 CRX-HF new in May 1988. It was one of the best days of my life. I remember going to fetch it with my younger brother. I was so scared to pull it out of the parking lot. I paid $9,172 for it. What made the car unbelievable to drive was the double-wishbone suspension-with short wheelbase & lightness. My brother moved to Popular Bluff, Missouri for a short period. I drove down there in my car to see him, through the eastern Ozark mountains along twisting turning roads. The car just hugged and absorbed the twist and turns like nothing I've ever experienced since. It was the best car I have ever owned.
After 8 years with it, I got a 1992 Miata. This car was even more intense to drive, but it supplied too much feedback, and after a while I got tired of the ride - and started dreaming of the isolation that one assumes occurs with a Buick. So that made the CRX even more remarkable - because it provided the tactile sense of the Miata without the fatiguing over-supply-of-feedback.
On top of that, look at the design today. It still looks contemporary. That's 35 years ago! In 1988 a good looking 30 year old car would have been something like a 1955 Chevy - definitely dated.
Your story brought a tear to my eye as it reminded me of the day I drove my new ‘90 Si off the lot, not yet really knowing how to drive a manual and I had the nerve to drive to SF! I paid 10,500 with 250 down. I still have her, she’s got rust on sunroof but that’s cosmetic. You have to drive a CRX to understand why these cars are so beloved. I think this car represents Soichiro Honda’s secret heart.
This is an example of why I feel the auto industry is going backwards with hybrids. Some will say that with today's requirements for crash standards it wouldn't be possible to build a car like the CRX, yet the Miata weighs just 2,400 lbs
I miss mine , the milage was honest , on one trip I really pushed over thd mountains and through the canyons , averaged 60 miles per hour for the trip and still got over sixty mile per gallon , all on a twisty two lane highway ( Abbotsford to Forest Grove B.C.

crxは2代目乗ってた正に青春を共にした車だった!ホンダが輝いていた時代っだったなぁ
でも今は見る影もなくなってしまった
I have a 1990 CRX HF. I drive from Cali to Chicago in 5 tanks of gas it gives me 50 ÷ miles a gallon , i bought it in 08 and only done tune ups, brakes , tires. And 2 timea timing belt and water pump, and it has 260000 milea still running good not burning oil or over heating so im keeping my CRX till my grandson is old enough to drive, he is only 3 months old
Loved my 87 Civic CRX Si. Great gas mileage and fun to drive. Started my love of Honda's. Miss the days when a small fun car was all you needed. Hate today's SUV thing, I laugh and think what is so great to drive a tall ugly station wagon! Guess everyone wants to be a 1950's housewife.
Well the station wagon can be subjective. You must be a young buck. lol A lot of us who grew up with the station wagon would like to have one that our parents had back in the day. For me, it was a 1968 Bel Air Wagon! Now, I do have a buddy of mine who is in his 30's who just bought a bad ass "barn find" 1991 CRX in blue. I honestly would not mind having one but finding one in good condition is almost impossible. Thanks for watching and your comment!
My buddy had a 91 crx Si in the early 90s. We put that car through hell and it wouldn’t break, that’s what got me into Hondas and I haven’t had anything else since ‘95. Started with an 81 prelude,an 86 Prelude that I drove to 450 thousand kms, 92 Civic Si hatch,an 01 Prelude which I still have and it’s still like new. I daily drive my 14 Civic coupe 5 speed and will drive it until it dies. I talked to an older guy last week when I saw him driving his nice crx Si and I gave him my number if he ever wants to sell. He bought it brand new in 1989 for 14 grand Canadian,it still looks great,no rust or anything even at 415 thousand kms😊
Had an 86 civic Si, not the CRX, but same thing under the skin. Very good car. I beat on mine like it owed me money. Blew out a clutch every 6 months and a trans every 12 months, but I was VERY rough on it.
We would say a "tough little car"! lol
This takes me back. In highschool in 98 I recall there were really 3 car styles that were popular. The C Rex, S10 and G bodies.. not fun to ride in the cargo area.
We had an 84 as a 'yard car' at a junkyard I worked at in 04. It was a total blast to drive, but was clearly nearing the end of its life. We didn't help. I wish I had one today.
And double wishbone suspension from 88’ on!!! Honda needs to bring it back on everything.
My first new car was a Honda Civic CRX HF, it was the best car I've ever owned, hands down. I would get 60 mpg, at times and into the 50s, regularly. I wish I'd never gotten rid of it.
This CR-X was Honda at its prime, the car was good looking in both Generations, performed extremely well, was reliable and desirable. None of the above is true of Honda today unfortunately.

Loved the CRX - Car & Drivers Twin Engine one was awesome, but If you were putting kids or adults in the back of a CRX you were just waiting to get a ticket - they don't have a back seat
My cousin dated a guy, him and friends had same year crx's, but each of them were different in style. Fell in love them, trying to find one
Award wining CRX’s ahead of its time and could out do a Lotis Esprit in the slalom course.
I have a mint 85 with 29,000 Km
I myself have 10 88-91 civic hatchbacks and sedans. 2 86 SI civic hatchbacks and 1 87 civic wagon. The golden era of hondas was the best. I'm also 49 years old and still enjoying hondas.
Wow Todd!! Thanks for watching. Make sure and subscribe.
My first Japanese car a 1988 CRX SI black on black. A 1.6 litre engine 5spd TRANS this was a great everyday car and it was real good on gas! I bought this car used and living in a northern climate salt killed that cars body in time but I ended up selling when my kid was born..a two seater was not going to work. Love that car to this day and never see them around anymore you think Honda killed a perfect car design who knows??
Now you got people in my age range "im 25 btw" moding them and wrapping them arrount trees. Its almost the same for the nissan 240sx. Super rare to find one in decent shape and people are asking an arm and a leg for them
Yup, A buddy of ours picked one up that was a barn find. Unmolested and just an awesome car that you just don't see anymore. Thanks for watching and commenting.
and the CRX (and the Civic) were the first to use the V-Tec engine
can it be argued the the S2000 is the spiritual sucessor of the CRX?
At 1:56 you said the CRX was a 2+2 with a small back seat, but they were all 2 seaters in the US. JDM may have had something else, but not here.
I suspect the confusion was the cutaway illustration you used at 2:07 which I believe was from a chilton manual or the other one, was it hayns? That’s an 86/87 civic hatchback Dx or S with the carb on top of a 1.3 or 1.5. It’s just a regular civic hatch back and not a CRX. This one also looks to be right hand drive.
Thanks for the information!
I had one with a "backseat" it was micro. It was a very rare option came with a auto and sunroof si car. Super funky
If Acura can bring back the Integra, Honda can find a way to do a limited run of a revived CRX. I wanted to own one, but they're too scarce and too expensive now.
The CRX was a two-seater in the United States. It was a 2+2 seater elsewhere. If we had gotten the 2+2 version, insurance rates wouldn't have been so high.
Had a 1984 1.5 Red. Most dependable car I have ever owned…
We're glad it worked out for you Joseph. Thanks for watching!
Awesome video!! Accurate about the car shows 😂 🔥
Thanks!
Cars now are getting bigger and bigger.
Just look at the old Civic and Accord, how proportionally smart they were. 0:20
Cool video B.B.❣️ Can you do a video on the Prelude?🙏🙏🙏❣️
My brother learned to drive in one of these while I was laying in the rear package shelf.
hahaha! We appreciate you watching our video and commenting! Please subscribe to our channel. It really helps us out.
@@ThisOldCarChannel Helps what? The fake fuel crisis and oil issues producing plastics that are not needed? THE CRX IS A LESSON!
I can remember in '95 my friend Peter who had a false left leg from his knee downwards had a yellow crx with a manual transmission
Thanks for watching and the the feedback. Make sure and subscribe to win merch!
I was waiting for them to bring up the see through hatch that came out later for safety.
Fun little car
I always wanted CRX but I was kid and I can't find one that hasn't been modified beyond fixing or over priced 😢
You can always fix them but overpriced they are. Just picked one up and owner would not budge on price.
There's one too many "was" in the title of the video. Can that be changed?
Say Was? I mean What? lol. Let me fix that John. Oooops...Thanks man.
"Ballade" means "leisurely walk" in french.
EXCELLENT
My uncle had a 84 CRX. It ran perfect until he traded it in for a 94 Del Sol Si.
That "drawing hand thing" got old after a while. Just use it once in a while, if you must, other wise just fade one photo into the other.
@Hooda Gooboy THE HONDA CRX THE HONDA CRX THE HONDA CRX THE HONDA CRX I WANT MORE HONDA CRX
I remember the battles with the golf gti. 😁
@RheinJong 64 hashtag golf hashtag battles (get the idea)
The standard 84 honda civic was a kammback. The crx was not. The crx also did not have a back seat in the US market.
Thanks for watching!
The way that you do the video with the animation is cool, but Annoying. I suggest that you tone it down a bit.
Thanks for watching and the the feedback. Make sure and subscribe to win merch!
What do you mean for it's time? You place a K 20 in there and it's fast for today's time
Title was bullshit, had a robo meaning.
HAD ONE SO FUN TO DRIVE & EASY PARK NEEDED POWER WINDOWS.LOCKS & CRUSE CONTROL. PLEASE MAKE THEM AGAIN HONDA WITH A TURBO AUTOMATIC OR ELECTRIC
I've a french channel to rebuild my Honda CRX Vtec (EE8) 😃
Love these videos but, I gotta say, the animation is pretty annoying. By the time a pic is complete, it’s gone.
Only jdm crx had the rear seats. US didnt.
That's not true, the edm had rear seats too!
Great car. Annoying graphics.
Can we please dispense with the animated drawing hand? I understand if it shows dry erase board animations, but to "draw" photographs is just distracting and annoying.
Some low mileage, unmolested examples are fetching $40,000 these days.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👍🏾🍁🇨🇦 I currently own a ‘91 EF Si H/B w/a B-SERIES TYPE R‼️👀😎
Tight man. I got a 91 si k20a2 6-speed. I wish it was an 88 hf tho!
The CRX was NEVER a 2+2. All CRX's were 2 seaters.
Never say never because it was a 2+2 in Japan.
It was a four, because there was alot of fournacating happening due to these lil rice rockets!
Hondaに求めるのはこんな車なんだけど首脳陣や経営陣が株主の顔色みて仕事してたら消費者にソッポむかれちゃうよね
bay-laid? thats not how i ever want to read the word ballade. idk care if its true or not. lol
