  • Thanks for joining us in looking at another of Switzerland's main lines, in amazing weather. This video is a testimony to Swiss engineering, precision & dedication to quality (although many still find enough to complain about, haha).
If you watched the recent Geneva - Bern - Zürich trip, we'll be on the same line for the first 43 minutes of the video before turning off towards Lausanne and Bern in Denges-Echandens, only this time with reduced speeds as we're not in a tilt train. The most beautiful part is arguably the section between Lausanne & Palézieux overlooking the lake of Geneva whilst passing through hillsides covered in vineyards and traditional Swiss houses.
Enjoy the changing scenery as we make our way towards the capital, Bern and enter the station from an uncommon direction for an InterCity train (most trains enter and leave from the same side - Bern used to be a terminus station).
After Bern we'll hit up the "Bahn 2000" line, the only open track in Switzerland allowing speeds of 200km/h. Our train is the only train on the high speed line to bypass Olten, by taking the route towards Aarburg-Oftringen in Rothrist and then a connecting track to the line Sursee - Luzern, which was famously built during World War II to allow direct trains between Bern and Luzern in the case of an emergency.
Towards Luzern, some dark storm clouds create a special atmosphere as we approach our final stop. Today's locomotive is an SBB Re 460 "Lok 2000" produced between 1992 - 1996, of which 119 were produced and form the backbone of SBB's standard push-pull long distance rolling stock. They are currently going through a modernisation program to allow a further 20 years of service, including new traction converters, which changes the drive sound. The locomotive we are in today is still in it's original form, meaning you will be hearing the old traction converters working their magic.
Next to the station names, I’ve included altitude in meters. The maximum allowable speeds are also shown on the bottom right of the screen as they come into effect. On a number of occasions where the speed is limited due to signalling, the signal colours are shown at the top right of the screen. This is to help viewers make sense of the different colour combinations.
As we pass junctions, I have included purple comments on available videos in the respective directions. These videos are (or will be) linked below for your convenience.
I have included all gradients I was able to make out for those who are interested. They are shown in the top right corner with a promille value (1/10%), as they are displayed to drivers.

Swiss rail is truly a world leader in engineering. I'm in awe at the smoothness and calmness of the system. The banked curves and the lack of annoying alarms, bells, dings, clacks, rattles and train horns or whistles just leaves room for a smooth hum. I wished we had this in the USA Seeing the ride from the front is also a nice treat. So much beautiful scenery.

As an extremely anxious person, I've discovered that watching these sorts of train journeys have been tremendously successful in keeping me calm and stress-free these last few months. Thanks for these vids, it means a lot, and the beautiful scenery makes me want to visit and ride these rails when things improve globally. Greetings from Canada.

Amazing. If we here in the states had 1/3 Of the infrastructure and sophistication in high speed rail it would eventually (I say eventually because we're addicted to cars and killing ourselves with polllution) be a game changer.
You can see it is an infrastructure that is important. I would love to come ride this train. Thank you for this.

Thanks again for a great journey. I just love the relaxed approach you Swiss have to lineside fences, (or absence thereof). Even in high speed sections there are foot/cycle paths just a few metres from the track. You are a very cool people.
I'm reminded of first arriving in Lucerne from Rome. Having learned there to survive the chaos of marked pedestrian crossings by waiting, then plunging into a gap, when outside the Lucerne station, I paused momentarily at the crossing, and was astounded to see all traffic glide to a halt. Wonderful!

    • @lorirocks777

Yeah, I really appreciate that about Switzerland too.. that many places that would be fenced off and closed to the public in other countries are open and there is just a general trust that people will do the right thing. I hope that trust won't be abused in the future.

I spent a few weeks in Fribourg/Freiburg in 1973 with a bunch of people from Norway, Finland, Yugoslavia, Greece, Egypt, UK, etc. doing a data communications programming course. The instructor was a South African and it was taught in English. It must have been difficult for one of the Finns who couldn't speak a word of English. He was a very good drinker, but, and taught us a few drinking songs. The reason that I'm commenting here is that there was a very good restaurant at the railway station. Silver service, white linen table cloths and napkins, waiters in formal waiter dress, the sommelier and the maitre d wore suits. Very good food at reasonable prices. I'm told that all the railway station fine dining restaurants are gone. That's very sad.

Excellent. Is Rose' the 'summit' of the line? there seems to be a large railway workshop there possibly for servicing helper engines in the past uncoupled here at the top of the hill? Is the very long platforms at Bern to allow for two trains to use the platform at once? Similar to the two trains on the same track in a station seen later on. There looks like 'Thunder in the mountains' (song) as we get close to our destination.

Bern has the longest platforms I have ever seen!

    • @AlexanderOnFire
      @AlexanderOnFire 3 ปีที่แล้ว

They are building a new underpass and underground station in Bern. To build while the train station is in use, they are just closing one plattform at the time to build a part of the passage under it. To do that with the same capacity, they made plattform 9/10 longer. So it is only temporary.

Fantastico l'affiancamento dei due convogli e il sorpasso prima della stazione di Losanna.
Paesaggi del lago Lemano e del lago di Lucerna molto belli, la Svizzera è sempre molto bella.

Really liked revisiting the map as the train transversed its route--doing so gave a better overall sense of where one was in the journey. Perhaps a bit more often, as when making every station stop or while in one of the longer tunnels?
0:45:11 Chasing that second consist was pretty neat. If only a steam locomotive were on the head end...
1:58:33 Is that employee violating Rule G?! And while operating a track vehicle, no less.
2:56:29 Former/unused location of Luzern station?

Hey, lorirocks, I forgot. First, thank you, Brad, for filming this beautiful ride, it's much appreciated. Second, any idea if the old Vauderens Tunnel was capped? Just curious if it is still accessable for a walk through (though one would likely need to trespass on private property to reach either portal.)
