    Amanda hart, YOU ROCK!!! Thank you for making this video. You exemplified how and why the scientific method works at getting to the facts. You made my day! = )

    Dawn is good for all purpose cleaning, it's great on oily stains. Never use laundry detergent on silk, the enzymes will destroy the fabric.

      +Jeff Lebowski Thanks for watching. Based on my results, the final laundry detergent washing did improve almost all of the solvent stain remover's performances. However, my intention was to hand wash, as a last resort, only after routine dry cleaning was not removing the stubborn stains on my silk skirts.

    I watched a silk cleaning video recently and she used dawn to pretreat but then added a little amount of hair conditioner to her wash machine...helps keep the fibers...silky!...

    THANK YOU for a great how-to video. I'm wanting to clean three 100 year-old silk minister stoles of my grandfather. They're very fragile and have some stains. Also hand embroidery. I will now be trying the DAWN method. And I appreciate the comment to not fold or wring the fabric!

    The use of a brush is to tap gentley on the stain (careful on delicate fabrics) as it penatrates the fabric weave to push the stain on through.

    If you look closely, there is color loss in all swatches. These are the lighter rings she refers too as circles. Dawn is an excellent product for removing grease from washable colorfast fabrics since it is a water based product. Spot removal on a fabric swatch is a whole different ball game than cleaning an entire garment. This process would leave a ring and color loss on a garment.

    • @AmandaHartTV
      @AmandaHartTV  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FRED WILEY Hi, Fred. Thanks for watching. I did not attempt to do spot removal on my swatches, nor did I use grease as a stain. As shown (see 6:55) the swatches were totally submersed in the solvent for 15 minutes and then rinsed. My full garments soaked in Dawn for 15 minutes (see 24:35) rinsed, and were then washed in laundry detergent before air drying. Dawn actually removed the color rings/color loss, left by other solvents or stains, (see 25:42).

      Amanda Hart Olive oil is grease or an oily stain. Most cooked food stains contain an oil component, I don't see how rubbing the silk fabric with Dawn and a tooth brush bristles did not cause damage . I do admire your diligence and video abilities,

    • @AmandaHartTV
      @AmandaHartTV  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      FRED WILEY Hi Fred, thanks for your comments. Oh, I see...you mean grease, as in cooking oil. ok, yes, Dawn removed it. I did clean my entire garments (the 2 skirts) in the video. They both came out great. I used a soft bristle tooth brush and a plastic knife, so not to damage the silk fibers. Thanks, again.

    THAT was amazing! Thank you for taking so much time. I recently purchases a second hand Hermes Scarf that had more than a few “barely noticeable” stains as described. I’m going to try your method to see if I have any luck. It can’t be worse. Lol. I will report back with a before and after.

    I have a Oscar de la renta silk, runway short sleeve shirt with grease on for year, even though I had tried to have a professional dry cleaning couple of times.

    You should of re used butter or some other grease, which is many times something that won't come out. But you're brilliant with a scientific mind. I love it.

    • @AmandaHartTV
      @AmandaHartTV  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      naanaa1111 Thanks for watching! Great idea. I will use butter on my next experiment. I'm guessing Dawn will have no trouble removing butter.

    Oh my goodness! Thank you so very much Amanda! You've saved us a lot, I mean A LOT of work and showed what does work and what does not work on removing stains from silk clothing. Kathy from Arizona

      Thanks for watching, Kathy. I am so glad it helped you. It took me a whole month to make this "documentary". I most recently used DAWN on my carpet stains and it worked fabulously. Hey?! If DAWN is that strong, maybe I shouldn't be eating off of my washed plates and possibly digesting it?

    Thank you so much, Amanda for this controlled experiment. Great job! I'm not really surprised by Dawn because it seems to get so many stains out. I've been using it in a spray bottle with water & vinegar as my "Shout". That's all I use now. I'm worried about silk scarves that were very expensive because they are prints and could bleed. Any ideas? Blessings...

    The Sharpie would come out with 90-91% alcohol- The video showed a 70% solution I think. You could use the alcohol after the dawn to get the tumeric out first. Or you could skip the sharpies while you are eating turmeric ? Time to make some hard choices here..lol...just kiddin'

    Thanks so much for this video! I have a black silk blouse that has oil stains on it from food oils. I plan to try some dish detergent (don't live in a country where Dawn is sold) on it tonight.

      kaloingie123 Another thing to try if the stains are fresh is to put some baking powder on them because it will absorb the oil.

    You should have used 'Tide' in one of your samples. It is by far the best washing detergent out there

  • @shopahauliquewithjacquelin7025
    @shopahauliquewithjacquelin7025 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The color difference is due to not having the control sample in the same orientation. The black threads should have flowed in the same direction. The light reflects differently.
    Excellent video.

      I have a feeling the quality of silk she uses will be able to handle a gentle cycle, garment bag with some woollite. That’s how I launder my silk pillowcases... I’m about to hand wash a bunch of other silk stuff in the bathtub...wish me luck!!!

    what about vinegar or just hot water???? once i washed my silk dress in cold water with soap, it was OK. does it also mean baking soda sucks for all silk?

    • @AmandaHartTV
      @AmandaHartTV  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Netty S Hi, Netty. Yes, in my experiment baking soda was terrible. Not only did it not remove the stains, it actually set the stains, making them impossible to remove with other solvents. Thanks for watching.

      +Chelsea Upholstery Thank you for watching. I did not wash my silk in the washing machine. I did it by hand, because I believe the "hand wash" cycle in the machine agitates more, than by hand. I would not line dry, but towel dry flat, so not to stretch or dent the fabric. Or, try your ideas and make a video?! Good luck with your project.

    You spent a lot of time showing us club soda and bleach processes, but I did not see the process you used for the #1 results with Dawn. I do not feel that I could Dawn with any ease of mind because I don't know what you did with it and the steps you took. And please ditch the music. I want to hear you, and the music is unhelpful for those with hearing loss. Can you please do another video with just the Dawn?

      The process for all 10 solvents was the same. 1) SCRAPE off solid with plastic knife 2) BRUSH in circular motion with solvent 3) SOAK in solvent for 15 minutes 4) RINSE with cold water 5) PRESS and blot on cotton towel 6) DRY laying flat 7) IRON
