I could see something like this coming in handy for reflow duties with all the tiny boards on the market.
Nice. 280°C is hotter than you think. Enough to melt the solder but not so hot as to damage the board or components. Thanks for the video. ☮️ brother.
I have been needing one of these forever
Perfect for my micro-controller pcb work work where I need to just heat a small specific area on the board. I have been using a heat gun with a Teflon restriction hose. However, between the de-solder gun, heat gun and trying to pull an IC has been a pita. I'd heat the back of the board then set the heat gun down and try to remove the IC before the back of the board cooled off too much; typically a few seconds. PERFECT !!!
I had one of those and it failed. So I took the heating element and coupled it to one of those cheap PWM modules form AliExpress, reused an old 20 volt Laptop power supply and mounted a larger Aluminium plate on top and voila! I now have a great coffee mug heater...
I have one similar to this - its handy for preheating the boards as well - I usually preheat and finish with my hot air at 350C with little air and the joints weld up real smoothly , they are a bit under powered by themselves. I saved the extra cost for the power block and USB cable by just making a USB C to my bench power supply set at 19.5V 2.5A

I have a plate like this myself. It works well with low temp solder.
It's not hot enough for normal soldering.
I've had this fancy Hair iron that has 2Huge elements. ,an OLED and power source already built in. I discovered when taking it apart it can be calibrated as well. Great find for $1 at the thrift store. I really need a 3d printer so I can get all these projects boxed up.
I said that to say this. It's not bad for $25 for what it is.
I would find the small size a limitation to a lot of work but in any case a hotplate is always useful when you really need it

People may want to check out "PTC heating plate BGA" as well. It's less safe because it plugs directly into mains, but it costs ~$3 (in my case), has much bigger plate (~ 3 times), can go up to 400 W and therefore heats up in less than a minute (in description at th-cam.com/video/Ce1tNj7AYZU/w-d-xo.html it's said that it heats up in 30 seconds), and needs only a cord with a switch because of builtin constant temperature control (~270C).
The generic one i got doesn't have any trouble heating up like that, i suspect that USB cable may be limiting it
I also see a different one on Amazon that goes up to 400 degrees for $45. Is that one better?
I recently watched a video documentary from the 1940's on turpentine production in the United States.
They make it from pine tree sap by boiling it down. Another thing they get from this sap is rosin for soldering and stringed instrument bows.
I highly recommend watching the old film on TH-cam.
It got me wondering if turpentine might work better to remove rosin from our circuit boards better than alcohol?
Most of the turpentine we get today is made from petroleum products and labeled mineral spirits but it might still work to thin out rosin.

So it's slow to heat up, stains easily.... I guess you get what you pay for.
