Thank you for all the new recommendations! Robin Hobb is my favouritest of all time... Althea, Brashen, Amber, Etta, and Paragon all live in me, and Malta's character arc is incredible. My YA fantasy list would include Garth Nix's Old Kingdom series and Kristin Cashore's Graceling and Fire. Onwards to the library for your recommendations!
All great books (from the last 20 years purposefully leaving out all the old gods of fantasy writing). Surprised not to see Canavan, Mclellan, Islington or Brett just to mention a few, but I would be hard pressed to replace anyone on your 10 item list aswell. Should I mention just one author from the last 20 years, it would be Joe Abercrombie. I just love his way of writing characters. Their personality development is like molecular gastronomy, you expect one thing and get another.
Thank you for these! I haven't read most of these and was in desperate need of something to read. I fly through book incredibly fast and needed something new.
As a reader dating back to the so-called golden age of science fiction, i noticed that all the books you reviewed were written in the last ten years or so. I have read the Jemisin series and the first four books the Sanderson series and I agree with you about how great they are. There are so many series awaiting your reading experience, you could do a whole top ten fantasy series from the past. Old fans like myself just might enjoy that. I know you would enjoy the reading.
To be fair, Kingkiller and Gentlemen Bastards are 15 years old, Sanderson also started writing about then, and Hobb started writing in the 90's. That said, some of my favorites were from the 80's and 90's: Wheel of Time, Black Company, Symphony of Ages, Dragon Prince (Melanie Rawn), Chronicles of the Cheysuli and Kushiel's Legacy
I agree that she would love some of the older books and series’. I would love to see that list as well. But I’ve read most of the books she mentioned in the video and love them all too.
@@syndmoria3299 if he is anything like me. He is referring to series that came long before the 90s and likely before the 80s. Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, Amber Chronicles, Xanth, Deryni chronicles, Elric, Earthsea Trilogy, the Princess Bride. Just to name a few classics. I could probably name a dozen more
Thank you so much...I just finished all of Tolkien's books and not sure what to read now...Thanks for posting the names of the series as I had trouble hearing and seeing all the names.
So happy to see more love for the Liveship books. The Farseer novels are great, but the Liveship arc ties it alllll together. Thanks for sharing some great books to check out! I’m a huge Sanderson fan and love Mistborn and Stormlight! I’ve also read the broken earth and name of the wind series. One lesser known series that I bet you’d really enjoy would be the Licanius Trilogy. The author wrote it after reading mistborn. It feels very similar to a Sanderson book, and I would rate it on similar levels to Mistborn! Good character development and interesting magic system!
I read the Mistborn Trilogy because of you and I loved it so much ! So thank you! & Im really happy that you loved The Poppy War series as much as i did! & that it made your list!!
If you like Brandon Sanderson, you should pick up the daddy of all fantasy series and that is the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. It’s a phenomenal 14 book series that Brandon finished because unfortunately Robert passed away in 2007. It’s so good
I mean, I'm a huge BS fan but WoT is definitely not up my lane. There are parts I like, surely. But the female characters, in general, make me want to quit the series. And the pacing is killing me. And I'm only in book 5!
I was so happy to see Robin Hobb's books in here! I don't find them in many booktube videos so I'm glad to find it here. Robin is my fave writer so far. And I totally agree with you, I love Fitz so much and I love reading about him but the Ships of Magic trilogy was FIRE 🔥 I devoured them... Something that it's difficult to do with Fitz as I have to give myself breaks to process the pain 😂 Great video! The first two series looked interesting, I'd like to give them a try later
I'm almost done with the first book in the Gentleman Bastards series, my first ever adult fantasy, and 1. I love it so much 2. At the beginning of the book I honestly didn't even care if we got a plot, I could just read about the gang's antics all day 3. I DIDN'T EXPECT THIS BOOK TO RIP MY HEART OUT
TH-cam has shown me this video as suggested and I’m so happy to have run into it! Thank you so much! I read fast and every time I finish another Saga there is a problem what to read next, and you’ve given me 2 authors I haven’t read! In my turn I want to mention the author that impressed me and made my top 10 fantasy writers - Guy Gavriel Kay. I loved his The Sarantine Mosaic Series and Under Heaven dilogy. Thanks again! Liked, subscribed, keep up the good work!
All the series on here that I’ve read, I’ve loved them! The ones I haven’t read are on my tbr! I would probably include The Burning Series. If I included books that are equal parts scifi and fantasy I’d include the Red Rising Saga and The Locked Tomb Trilogy.
@@barbarian_1016 Red RIsing is two cycles. So the first trilogy is complete. Then in the second 3 books, the last one is still unpublished. The first 3 (where I stopped) are about as perfect as a scifi/fantasy trilogy gets. @@traviscopus4869 super thanks!! I had this on my want to read list for ever, but every time I see there is one more book coming, so I wait. I will read them next.
There's a a fantasy webnovel that I have really enjoyed that seems to have physical copies as well. It is called Supreme magus it's a story about a severely abused person going through his life and reincarnating into a mystical world where he remembers his past lives, and how he deals with his traumas as he tries to grow and learn about the new world I love the magic system and the Enchanted item-crafting it even has magic schools it feels like a longer darker more intense version of Harry Potter where the main character is kind of a as* that grows. Super recommended
Thank you so much for sharing! I really loved City of Stairs and I can't wait to get right into everything that you've recommended. I could also add two of my favorite books (series) here, one if Crave and the other is 59 Pieces of a Dragon.
Robin Hobb is by far my favourite writer, I’ve never love characters more. Her books effortlessly sweep you into and along the story, so that you can’t help but want to read on. I’ve re read them all many times and Fitz’s story line is definitely my favourite but love all the books in the Realm of the Elderlings. I still vividly remember not sleeping one night because I physically could not put the book down for last 100 pages of Fool’s Quest in the Fitz and the Fool trilogy. I was walking around my room reading the book I was so tense 😂
Really enjoyed the stories around Fitz and the Fool but her other stories fell short for me. But I have high standards and those that meet them are well worth the pay off.

this is a great list and I have already ordered several vol. 1's! One does wonder why Brian McClellan's books never seem to make these kinds of lists? His 'Powder Mage' and 'Gods of Blood and Powder' trilogies both have a ton of reviews and very high ratings everywhere I look.
Loved your list! Have read half of them, and excited to check out the other series you are recommending. A couple favorites of mine include Kevin Hearne’s Seven Kennings (2 Books so far, and a third coming out sometime in 2023), and The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
Some excellent stuff here and some I need to check out. I’m happy to see Locke Lamorra here, and the Liveship Traders was incredible. I’d throw in the writers that really got me into fantasy - David Gemmell and Tad William’s Memory Sorrow & Thorn. Oh, and Guy Gabriel Kay’s Tigana and A Song For Arbonne.
Lol, there were three series on this list that I hadn't heard of but almost all of the rest belong on my top 10 list too. So, to add three of mine in the place of the three of yours I haven't read: Discworld by Pratchett. They're all stand alones, so it doesn't matter which one you pick up, doesn't have to be Light Fantastic. He's so great at taking aspects of our world, dumping it in a Fantasy setting, making fun of it all but somehow still being really profound. If I had to pick just one it'd be Mort. Invisible Library series by Guinevere Cogman. It's about alternate worlds connected by an invisible Library, and the librarians "acquire" books to keep balance between the Dragons (order) and the Fae (chaos). Each book has a different setting (because alternate worlds) but they're all leaning on detective story or heist tropes. They're fast paced and fun to read, and because of the order-chaos thing, they can range from fairy tale to urban fantasy. There's also an overarching plotline about the Library itself that's as of yet unresolved. Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan and finished by Brandon Sanderson. It's ginormous and I just finished an entire reread a few weeks ago, and honestly, it just gets better every time. I love the characters, I love the plotting, the politics and scheming, the magic, the action.

3. Dawn of Wonder by Jonathan Renshaw, this one only has one book out so far but it was FANTASTIC!
Started reading Mistborn. Thanks for the recommendations.
I was nodding throughout the whole video. Great choice of series!!! I've read 9 out of 10, just need to read Daevabad trilogy!
i clicked on this video thinking you'd mention series like the grishaverse, or acotar, or shadowhunters, but none of them are here and i'm so happy to see a new, refreshing list of books!
aaah happy to know “The Green Bone Saga” made it into your fav list 😭😍❤️
I can listen to talking about books for hours
Good to see you giving attention to City of Stairs and its sequels! I agree that they're criminally underrated.
Hard to choose! Brandon Sanderson, Diplomat of Uram, Tales of Dunk and Egg... So many good fantasy books out there!
Dunk and Egg is beautiful
No "Book of the New Sun" by Wolfe?
I could probably name a dozen more
@@robertmccoll3569 - The Chronicles of Amber definitely has a permanent place on my bookshelf!
Thank you so much...I just finished all of Tolkien's books and not sure what to read now...Thanks for posting the names of the series as I had trouble hearing and seeing all the names.
When I see the name of the wind on a favorite list, I know I can trust it haha. The lies of Locke Lamora is also amazing! Excited to read all of this!
Babel - Bancroft
Nihtwise - Belcher
Eddie LaCrosse Mystery - Bledsoe
Blacktongue - Buehlman
Immortal - Doucette
Pax Arcana - James
So happy to see more love for the Liveship books. The Farseer novels are great, but the Liveship arc ties it alllll together. Will be adding the City of Stairs books, they sound really interesting--I love gods-based stories. The way gods interact with the mortal world is one of the main reasons the Malazan Book of the Fallen is my all-time favorite series of any genre.
I'd love to know how you felt about the ending of the Green Bone saga. I think they absolutely nailed it. (this is the first video of yours I've watched, so if you've addressed it in a different video forgive me I haven't found it yet!)
I literally paused this video to order the Lies of Locke Lamora. Regan’s recomendations never disappoint
Loved the lies of Locke Lamora. It’s a pity that Scott wasn’t able to do more in the series.
@@finbar000 There are 3 books and a 4th is supposed to be coming out.
@@zeusdeuce7438 sorry. I read the three, i meant it’s taking ages for thorn of emberlain to come out 😢
@@finbar000 Yea I thought it was supposed to be this past September but oh well 😔 let’s just hope he doesn’t pull a Rothfuss lol
@@zeusdeuce7438 such a pity. Love the both of them. I’m sure they’ll come good
Thanks for sharing some great books to check out!
Enjoyed your list! “City of Stairs” is awesome and glad to see it get some recognition!
what about the Riftwar Cycle by Rayomnd E Feist
I read the Mistborn Trilogy because of you and I loved it so much ! So thank you! & Im really happy that you loved The Poppy War series as much as i did! & that it made your list!!
Just start Mistborn! Not sure how it stayed off my radar for so long
If you like Brandon Sanderson, you should pick up the daddy of all fantasy series and that is the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. It’s a phenomenal 14 book series that Brandon finished because unfortunately Robert passed away in 2007. It’s so good
How young are you? The daddy of fantasy is Tolkien!😉 I agree that Jordan's Wheel of Time is utterly FANTASTIC!!
@@KisekiGamer1 I disagree, Tolkien is the granddaddy of fantasy
I mean, I'm a huge BS fan but WoT is definitely not up my lane. There are parts I like, surely. But the female characters, in general, make me want to quit the series. And the pacing is killing me. And I'm only in book 5!
Hello! Fanderson here. I loved the way you expand yor ideas and your pronunciation. Greetings from Colombia.
Yes! The Divine Cities Trilogy is so underrated. I am glad you recommended it. I love it!
*yall know i'm absolutely gonna put all of regan's recommendations in my wishlist*
I’ve read the entire Realm of the Elderlings, and thinking of young Malta still makes my eye twitch. Lol Love Robin Hobb!
Great list. You talked me into finally pulling the trigger to start The Poppy War.
Thank you! I have been away from fantasy for too long, much of this was new to me. I have already bought the Jade books based on your review.
Hmm. I'm not sure why I'm emotional watching this, amazing job!
Brent Weeks - Light Bringer trilogy is good one too, more dark and brutal fantasy with a very interesting magic system
Agreed! The magic system is epic.
Can see some of the series on the shelf behind her.
Really like the sound of The Divine Cities series will def check these out, great video
Just finished THE FIFTH SEASON & am on a waiting list for the next one - can't wait!
I'm almost done with the first book in the Gentleman Bastards series, my first ever adult fantasy, and 1. I love it so much 2. At the beginning of the book I honestly didn't even care if we got a plot, I could just read about the gang's antics all day 3. I DIDN'T EXPECT THIS BOOK TO RIP MY HEART OUT
That book packs such a punch
Great Characters
I had some of these on my TBR, and now they are all on it! I can’t wait!
I , also , loved THE DIVINE CITIES ! It is very well written and plot is absolutely AMAZING ! Good job , Regan ! 💞
The Poppy Wars trilogy is soooo GOOD💖💖💖
All the series on here that I’ve read, I’ve loved them! The ones I haven’t read are on my tbr! I would probably include The Burning Series. If I included books that are equal parts scifi and fantasy I’d include the Red Rising Saga and The Locked Tomb Trilogy.
I believe The Red Rising saga is not complete. Is it still worth reading now, or waiting for it to finish??
@@barbarian_1016 Red RIsing is two cycles. So the first trilogy is complete. Then in the second 3 books, the last one is still unpublished. The first 3 (where I stopped) are about as perfect as a scifi/fantasy trilogy gets. I'll probably read the second trilogy when the 3rd book comes out in 2022 but I don't really know if it can get better. I'm sure it can get worse.
All good recommendations Fantasy is by far my fave genre of books. Both Fantasy and Sci-fi
It’s really the only genre there is lol
We agree on so many of these, I feel reassured to try the few I had not already read, thanks!
I love Kingkiller Chronicles. I really need more books similar to The Name of the wind💔💔💔
Robert Jordan writes with a similar lyricism, but WoT is a huge commitment
If you tried hard, Shakespeare's Hamlet, it seemed like I didn't need intelligence
You didn't read the second book? Wise man's fear?
@@coolmaddy90 is it good
now can't wait for the YA version :3
I wish I'd found this video in time for my Christmas wish list! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and excitement about these series, I'm looking forward to reading them.
I just got back into reading so this video is definitely appreciated! The Poppy War series is sooooo good!!! I’m currently reading City if Brass and I’m really enjoying it so far!
Random question: does anybody know where she got her bookshelves from?
These are all so intimidating but also alluring! Is there any romance in them?! (particularly on the Brandon Sanderson ones!)
Mistborn has some romance! As do many of these actually (particularly the Daevabad Trilogy!)
Started Mistborn and it was talking about using metals as powers i was so confused so I’m glad you spoke a bit about the books otherwise i would have been a little lost
this is a great list and I have already ordered several vol. 1's!
One does wonder why Brian McClellan's books never seem to make these kinds of lists? His 'Powder Mage' and 'Gods of Blood and Powder' trilogies both have a ton of reviews and very high ratings everywhere I look.
I agree. Great books.
Ahhh can’t believe I’m here so early I’M SO EXCITED!!!!!😍😍😍
omg you‘re the first i hear talking about thise brandon sanderson books 😍 i love him so much! and the german translation ist amazing too!
Loved your list! Have read half of them, and excited to check out the other series you are recommending. A couple favorites of mine include Kevin Hearne’s Seven Kennings (2 Books so far, and a third coming out sometime in 2023), and The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
Really looking forward to checking out the City of Stairs trilogy. Thanks for sharing!
So, to add three of mine in the place of the three of yours I haven't read:
Discworld by Pratchett.
