Just watched this and your beginner tutorial. Bought coq today. About to dive in a second time, now actually having a bit of direction. Thanks a ton for making these videos!
Honestly trading in books does something to me, it releases some kind of chemical in my brain that makes me happy. I'm literally always on the lookout for books, it's an addiction.
I bet your nightmares consist of Qud runs without a single piece of literature lol fear not water-sib I will farm books for you! And that sweet sweet XP 😆
Love the video man. I'm a relatively new Qud'er (played a bit a year ago, but only dabbled), and this is super helpful. I can see the game is super deep, but it can be hard to enjoy the depth when you die 40 minutes into your new character every time.
Thanks for the tips! Specifically, being able to locate all the characters on the map or increasing the exploration speed will improve my quality of life enormously. The philosophy of not fighting without first having an escape plan is something that I plan to implement in my games, although unfortunately my experience is that deaths always occur when you access places with narrow walls where many units corner you and kill you in two turns. without being able to react.
You're very welcome :) I am a big fan of quality of life stuff, especially in a game like Qud where runs can last 10s of hours! You might want to consider phasing or teleportation if you're having trouble with narrow spaces
It was so painful to play without quick auto-explore/edge of map travel for me. Thank you so much! Also is there a way to get some kind of prosthetic legs/arms? I had a small accident with a gang of legendary snapjaws on a rifle/heavy weapon build. It didn't end well.
You're very welcome! Do you mean 'can I grow back my limbs?' because if so - YES! You'll need an Ubernostrum injector for that. If you did the Joppa start, you're guaranteed to get one for completing the 'What's eating the watervine?' quest. If you just want more limbs, and lets' be honest - who doesn't? Then also YES - you can keep your eyes out for 'Helping Hands', or try and fish for the multiple arms mutation :)
I actually never knew about the book trader. I met the Reseph guy and the mechanimist well and just kinda assumed that was all the special trade in there was at the stilt. Dont know how I missed her either, I always make early trips to the stilt. Also, important note on corrosive gas, super powerful but also very indiscriminate. Learned this the hard way on a true kin run when some skunks destroyed some becoming nooks. Never looked at skunks the same way since.
Glad this video helped, enjoy your the books trades! And yes - corrosive gas will destroy anything it touches (which btw also makes it great for mining)
Thank you so much for this just watched this and your beginners guide and it has helped massively! I got into the game my first few times and quickly died but this guide has helped me find some success! Thank you!❤
I bought the game years before steam release directly from the devs who emailed me a key. I haven't had the time or energy to fully get into it unfortunately. This video helped a lot. You've earned a sub sir.
I'm not sure talking about the water logged tunnel entrance in Joppa is the greatest thing for new people without a caveat of danger. I feel like it's like the puppy cave in ADOM. I've lost a lot of characters trying to go there from level 1 before really learning the early enemies and such. Great video though for helping new players!
I think it is worth mentioning as it's a great way to get used to dying in Qud haha. Nah, but for real, the caves are a great way to learn about exploration below ground, plus they're good for easy levelling with the Joppa start
Hmmm...I might give this another try. A few years ago I spent some time learning this game and then could pretty consistently get through the early game. But I died in Golgotha. Then I spent a long time on the next run making sure I was appropriately leveled and died there again. Then I gave up because the thought of going through the same early game yet again felt too tedious.
First off, thank you for watching. And second - this is a very common thing to hear, especially concerning Golgotha. I think Qud isn't super hard, however it can be random at times, with enemies that can one shot you etc. Ideally you want to be between level 15-20 to do Golgotha, depending on your build - melee builds will find it considerably easier than Espers. If I can give you one tip for Golgotha it would probably be to give Corrosive Gas a try. It makes the corridors down to the bottom trivial. Also I perosnally never find the early game tedious as the more you play, the easier you will find power levelling using books and Resheph lore over at the Stilt. Best of luck, and I hope this helps! Let me know how you get on :)
Good question! Firstly, but every piece of ammo you find in trades, it’s practically free. Secondly, if you’re using lead slugs then Mafeo in Grit Gate sells around 1000 each time his inventory restocks. Hope that helps!
I got all of those books in the Salt Dunes, yes. You can find books all over, but the Salt Dunes is good because it has wide open maps where you can see if there are any enemies lurking. In one of my recent dailies I grabbed over 200 books in under an hour in the Salt Dunes, and I think we managed to hit level 21 or something crazy.
Yo! Just discovered your channel and am loving the content! I've tried the game, but it didn't click till I saw your videos. I'm noticing I don't have the ability to change my auto explore speed in my options. There are multiple things you have that I don't, do you have a mod or something for those?
I am new to the game from the Holiday sale and I have already spent like 30 hours in the game and having a great time learning and dying. I'll be damned if I didn't think the area to west on the map was ocean not desert. Now that I know it is desert and not ocean I guess it makes sense because it isn't blue. However, prior to learning this just now, the way the sprites move and look I thought that was waves and now I gather that is sand blowing. lol I even imagined the building to the north west was some kind of lighthouse and I might need to find a boat to take me there or something. Geez.
May I ask how you make your camera not center the character when you move? If you still play this game regularly. I find myself sick when the camera is always centered when I move.
Yeah, they did! I'm honestly all for it though, the chests could sometimes have insanely good loot that made the early game too easy. I think there's still one chest you can loot for free though :)
I just started playing caves of qud after watching these videos. they must have patched windows into 2/3 of the starting chest containing homes because I kept get absolutely roasted trying to loot at the start
You mean to tell me, that the 1,657 Drams of Water I earned trading my books, COULDA BEEN SPENT ON EXP?!?! Man, The farthest ive gotten is the rusted archway, and thats about it. My runs dont last long, but im getting better each time I play!
@@Rogue_Rat Indeed, my most recent run, (the other night) I got to Grit Gate and was about to head out to Golgotha, but I tried leveling up first because I needed attribute points to get smart enough to unlock the Jungle Wayfaring. To make a long story short, getting lostdropped into a large group of minotaur looking people with fire bombs and a hostility towards anything in a yes radius was pretty much how I died. In that run I managed to gather quite a few books and was pretty powerful! Cant wait to do it again!
Don't think the Joppa chest looting works like it once did. Two of the buildings now have fences that allow line-of-sight and will likely aggro the townsfolk
@@AS-mt7vp Most of the time, but not always - bare in mind this is a video for beginners :) Also, on a character without multiple arms/truekin without helping hands, you only have two worn-on-arms slots, and there are a lot of other things that are better than force bracelets by the mid-late game (I friggin' love Kindrish!)

I was wondering why wait to turn in the books? Do they grant more XP at lvl 30 or is there some sort of enemy scaling?
@@zhylisz there is enemy scaling. Go fight glowfish at level 1 vs level 5. U get less than half the XP

im a lil bit late but why dont you use roleplay mode for save?

@Rogue_Rat 100%, and I suppose getting swarmed by knollworms and centipedes then fleeing into a slumberling is a good welcome to qud
Nice video Mr Rat. This will certainly help with new players such as myself.

How do you open world map, I been guessing where I am and after several playthroughs with other charectors I am level 10

You just pick one up, same as any item! :)
