I really enjoy and respect your teachings. You have a very good manner that makes it easy to understand the difference between "self defense" and "martial arts" I studied several styles and taught self defense to families, women, and children while serving in the Navy for 30 years. It is very fulfilling to enlighten those who think they can not protect themselves or their loved ones. Keep up the great work. I will continue to watch.

Finally! I knew this but it was refreshing to see someone that knows what he's talking about. A realistic approach. I'm Italian-American. I grew up on the streets of NJ. (In and around Newark). I did A LOT of damage to people that were attacking me with elbow strikes. Broke a lot of people's collarbones and noses in those years.

Hi Matt, glad you are showing these ultimate fighting tools. Sorry i just caught the end of class. When i practice the different elbow strikes, i always make a fist. As you know, it tightens the forearm muscles and wrists adding that additional power, and less prone to injury. God bless and stay safe. Doud.

Actually, 'Daniel,' that is an excellent addition to the "Horizontal'
elbow strike! For all you who are not well trained in the use of
Elbow strikes--- That horizontal, at least for me, is the most reli-
able, and effective...also, EASIEST to apply; And you put your-
self in good position for that follow-up 'Backfist.'

@@sgtrock6213 And may I add--- When your're in that horizontal
position, you're only giving your opponent a "SIDE--VIEW" of your
body, as opposed to "Frontal.' From there one can also employ a
      short, quick side 'Thrust kick."
Always try to give your opponent/attacker, a smaller target.

I have on multiple occasions used an arm wrap in conjunction with an elbow for an attacker from behind that has their hands on you. Basically doing the same motion you shows for the reverse elbow strike. Only wrapping you arm around his to lock it in. Then striking with the opposite elbow for the take down.
If their arm irlr arms are under your control. They can't avoid the other elbow coming in. Fight over.

YES-- now THAT is good stuff----after 40 years-- I use elbow strikes- palm heel strikes (never punch- bones too soft now), and various VICIOUS techniques that WORK every time.. and I do mean damn near EVERY TIME. I have studied lots of other arts besides the 5 I have high ranking black belts in- and I get what WORKS and add it to mine. Elbows, KNEES, break ankles and foundations, go for the WEAK spots QUICKLY-- I specialize in PUTTING THE ADVERSARY DOWN- and doing it FAST. (never really a "fight" to it- just me doing the put down) in 40 years- and 1000 Transactions (I call them that because someone always pays) I have only TWO losses..

Elbow strikes are lethal. Second hardest bones in the human body. I once knocked a guy senseless as I was leaving a train. All I did was swing my holdall up onto my shoulder, and this poor guy got in the way. I felt really bad for him, as he was doubled over on the platform. So that was a careless accident. Imagine doing it for real.

I would skip #4 the vertical downward strike and substitute the inverse of #3 an upward crossbody. the downward would be harder to pull off if you're a smaller person and Brock Lesner has about 10 inches and 200 pounds on me so the downward isn't going to work.

True. You have to use what works for you. Thanks!

super! i would add, practice on a stunned opp going to, or having gone down to his knee/s, ie, a downward elbow to the back of his neck, with you grabbing his/her clothing for control; plus, ditto for a completely down opp, drop elbow/forearm on the throat, neck.
** then, a bit complicated, but i think its has been outlawed for decades in muaythai: stun a guy> your off-hand grabs, eg, behind his neck (or, eg, grab collar) > step WAY back with your strong side foot, strong-side-elbow fully cocked behind you, so you're all stretched out, 180degrees 'bladed' to opp, leaning back somewhat, strong-hand-knuckles at your strong-side-ear, thumb down, elbow up, vertical>> here, your ENTIRE body is fully cocked, to step-in, lean in, rotate in, elbow strike 45degrees down to, eg, neck>> PRACTICE ODDLY by having your elbow MISS your target-hand-palm, by over-swinging (follow through) UNDER the palm of your target-hand.
So: you finish the swing, with your strong (elbowing) hand thumb down, in your weak-side armpit; your target-palm thumb up, sort-of strikes your strong-side shoulder; your forearms are now crossed in front of your face, your elbows are 6-8'' apart, in front of your lower-face.
I KNOW THIS must sound like some kinda BS, but i saw danny inosanto doing this in a seminar (NOT teaching it), and it took me about 10yrs to figure out WTF?! he was practicing! then, i saw a blackbelt magazine cover with dannys' protege' marc denny (dog brothers, holy sh_t stick fighting club) posing in that ODD elbow-strike finish-pose. then, danny did a youtube where his resident thái, muay thái national super-champ, demonstrated an elbow strike very much like this ODD strike. you also do a little shuffle-step-in, to deliver this strike.
also, yer not gonna bleev dis: i 'saved' 2 youtube muaythai bouts, where the guys KO-d their opps with horizontal elbows to the head, but NOT stepping in, NOT rotating in, ELBOW TIP UP VERTICAL, HAND, FINGERS UP, VERTICAL; i had to watch in slowmo replay a dozen times, B4 i could bleev my eyes; all they did was a little swing-movement of the typical guard-up arm-position. ok, bye...
