I remember an interview with the Tears for Fears guy who wrote the song where he said that the "dreams in which I'm dying" line wasn't meant to be as dark as it seems. He said when he had bad dreams it made him feel better when he woke up. It's a real psychological thing that if you are really anxious about something your brain makes you have extremely anxious, scary dreams. Then when you wake up you feel relieved because no matter what's going on in your life it's not THAT bad.

    • @Gwennedd
      @Gwennedd 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

Oh...so it's a "things could be waaaay worse" kinda thing. I never would have thought about that. Nightmares usually freak me out so much i can't sleep again after.
      It's an interesting concept.

@@Gwennedd I did a study on anxiety dreams for my college psychology class. They aren't as scary as nightmares about dying but usually are about things like being back in school and sitting for a test you aren't prepared for.

@@ruth2141 Mine are usually about danger, stalking, being chased and a few times, in my childhood, falling off an impossibly high swing ...I always woke up before hitting the ground. I used to have lucid dreams sometimes that I could manipulate...they were weird too.I took several courses in Psychology in college as well, so I do remember why nightmare happen.
But the last one was about someone unknown and silent standing by my bed looking at me sleeping just a foot away. THAT scared me so much I couldn't go back to sleep. That was only two weeks ago.

The Five Faces of New Pentaholics
    1. The most common is the Mitch Slapped. Commonly found when Mitch is heard for the first time in Hallelujah, The Prayer, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, Creep and doing Aha! at the Star Vista.
    2. The Wide Eyed Look of Disbelief. Normally found when you hear their Wall of Sound. Found when listening to Mary Did You Know, Imagine, Amazing Grace, The Prayer, Mad World and the Avalanche or Tsunami of O Holy Night.
    3. The I Didn’t Want It to End face. Most commonly found after listening to the 90s Dance Medley. It can also be found after listening to all their medleys and evolutions.
    4. The Teary Eyed Look. This is commonly found when listening to an emotional song of theirs or just the sheer beauty of their work. Commonly found when listening to Mary Did You Know, Hallelujah, Amazing Grace, Imagine, The Prayer, Prayers for This World, O Holy Night and most especially Thank You.
    5. The What Did I Just Hear Face. Happens when Pentatonix starts strong, or when you hear a really special note or Kevin sound. Is usually accompanied by rewinding the video or song to make sure your ears really heard what they heard. Those times are too many to list, but the most common rewind at the start moment is the beginning of Sound of Silence

This song has always resonated with me. I suffer from severe depression, anxiety, and PTSD. There are many times I just can't and I really can't tell or explain to people because there isn't always an explanation. People who get it get it ,people who don't never will.

Pentatonix has a way of making you see lyrics and understand them. I did the same thing you did with this song, with Mary did You Know.. It gave me a new perspective and appreciation of it and I got chills. I am religious but not a going to church every Sunday kind. Hearing them question Mary's thoughts when she had Jesus made me understand her much better in the clarity with which they sing the lyrics. I just love PTX.

This was one of their perfect songs that they released in the Covid Pandemic year of 2020.
A rather appropriate song for any year but especially 2020.
Their other perfect song was Thank You, an original from their Covid Christmas album which also included Amazing Grace.

That part always gets to me but most reactors miss it. Glad that you noticed and commented on it. Thank you.

I haven't seen the movie, but I've heard that the inspiration for the way they filmed this video (with the ephemeral images moving behind them) is a nod to "Donnie Darko" which also used this song. Their tight harmonies and expressions really create a mood. They are just so good at just going full on for the heart of whatever piece they are performing.

I’ve loved this song since Tears For Fears recorded it. Like Kiss From a Rose, Imagine, Sound of Silence, Bohemian Rhapsody, 90’s Dance Medley, Evolution of Michael Jackson, and so many more, PTX keeps delving into my youth for the very best songs and then they inevitably make them even better. They add to the conversation the original artists start, it seems to me. They really honor the source material but always with surprises and passion and power.

I'm old enough to remember the original Tears for Fears version from the 80's, which had much more upbeat tempo that contrasted with the lyrics. The PTX version is based on the 2001 Gary Jules cover from the Donnie Darko soundtrack, which has become the standard. And it's been a while since I saw the movie, but I've heard the PTX video, with the walking ghosts in the background, is also based on the movie.

I really enjoy your vibe. You seem calm and intelligent and open to all of your feelings. You've lived your life. You've lived your childhood. You understand the difference. You're able to appreciate what you knew then and what you know now. And you're not jaded. You're communicative. The Sound of Silence made me stop and reflect on the assassination of the Kennedys. And of MLK and of Malcolm X. If you haven't lived through those times how do you reflect upon them? I appreciated the honesty of how you reflected upon them not having lived through the times. I guess I'm saying you just get it.

OK, subscribing for more Pentatonix! They are an awesome group, but also very real and kind to each other and their fans. They and their music got me through the pandemic lockdown. Notice that Kevin is all vocals this time, part of the harmonies. There are several songs iin which this happens - another one is Pure Imagination/Christmas Time is Here. Kirstin is a great actress. - she was originally aiming for Broadway (and she did do a stint as Lauren in Kinky Boots).

Hard to believe this song was a banger in the clubs! Tears for Fears was playing everywhere - upbeat, bouncy, AM pop, FM esoterics all flavours, but their true power was to catch you with the beat or a hook or melody but keep you with intellect and truths when you finally realized the lyrics. I remember seeing on the cover of Rolling Stone something to the effect of them never having put out a bad album and should be recognized as the best band of the decade. I don't think I knew one person who didn't have at least one of their albums. I love PTX's cover and really enjoy the nods to Danny Darko and even Adam Lambert's cover back on American Idol. I think that the star in this vid was Kirstin for the very reason you stated. The side eye, the half smile seeming to referance perhaps to a dream that was the best she'd ever had. That made it real and connected. Like you said, something changed - it became more than just 5 people singing well. I reccommend you check out the Popspring concert next. "Water" with our new mommy taking lead is probably in my top 3 favourite songs - by anybody! Enjoy the rabbit hole!

I just found your PTX reactions and subscribed for more. This group is amazing and doesn't ever disappoint! This is definitely one of my favorite songs they've covered, and as others have mentioned, it was very aptly timed as it came out during the massive Covid year of 2020. (Which meant each person individually recorded their parts, in their own homes, and it all got mixed together, and it still sounded like they were all in the same room together.) I've loved this song ever since hearing it on the soundtrack to the movie "Donnie Darko" (good movie if you want an absolute head-trip) and they did an amazing job with it.
You can't really go wrong with anything they do, but I'd definitely recommend you check out their cover of "Hallelujah" (originally by Leonard Cohn though it's been covered a LOT over the years) as well as "Bohemian Rhapsody". (Though if you haven't seen the original of that one, by Queen, please watch it first!) And another fun one I greatly enjoy is their cover of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" from The Lion King.
I'm really appreciating all the insight you give into the songs and their lyrics, and how deeply you look at them. Please keep up with this group and you won't regret it!

You seem to enjoy lyrics. I would suggest you listen to For King and Country. They are 2 Australian brothers in an 8 member band. Instead of no instruments like Pentatonix, they play ALL the instruments, usually having 45 instruments on stage during a concert. They sell out arenas all over the US, and have millions of views on TH-cam. They have won 4 Grammys. Songs you should look for are:
    Fix My Eyes
    God Only Knows
    Shoulders
    Joy
    Burn the Ships
    Together
    Love Me Like I Am
    Unsung Hero
    For God is With Us
Their Christmas music is also awesome.
If you go to their channel, you will find EPIC music videos, very cinematic, and also live arena performances. Try both!

Kirstin's "lip twitch" that you spoke about may not have anything to do with the song. You'll hear about Kirstin's "side smile" and "side smirk", especially in earlier videos - the right side of her mouth always draws up more when she's smiling. I believe she had some surgery to help correct it (she was told it could affect her singing), and she's done physical therapy to help correct it, but it still shows up at least a little bit, as you saw here. Check out their performance of Daft Punk during her solo, or Todrick Hall's The Wizard of Ahhhs featuring Pentatonix - it's much more noticeable in those videos, since they're much older.

Since you have such a strong penchant for analyzing lyrics, how about bring up the lyrics, go thru them, talk about them, and then enjoy how PTX interprets them and presents them.
