Oh Paul, all that work torn up !! Such a shame but I understand. I used to have a layout some years ago and have thought about building another one. I look at and subscribe now to a few TH-cam layouts. I particularly like yours as I live in the area and used to see the trains go down into Folkestone harbour. Perhaps I’ll have the nerve to pop into the gallery next time I’m in Hythe. All the best.

Well done Paul. After such hard work and effort in the first place, it took a lot to take the plunge and remove the centre section but i have to say what a difference to your space! I could even hear the change of tone in your voice when you were commentating on the new section and telling us how you overcame the challenges in getting the 2 car unit back up the incline - you have rediscovered your mojo and excitement that i think might have gotten lost in the harbour section in awe of such a massive long term job. At times it may have felt like a chore that never ended rather than an exciting project.
More space for you to do the things you love will also mean more excitement and a more methodical way of working. I love it - can't wait to see how this progresses and look forward to seeing more as you go along! As always, thank you for your efforts in putting these together for us to all share your journey!

Hi Paul. I think you've made a great decision. This way you can get to the scenery (which you've obviously got a knock for as seen with your dioramas) much quicker which appears to be something you enjoy doing.

James I could not agree more, and thank you, Paul

Looking good Paul. But I would say the twin-track branch would look better as a single track and passing loop at the end.

    • @Sandlingjunction
      @Sandlingjunction  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you, it was a twin in the day and about 1938 ish became single until the late 50s when lifted altogether. cheers Paul

The temptation when you have a big space like that is to have huge complex layout. In the end it's too much. If you're not going to get the level of use or enjoyment out of it, simplify. I think you've made the right decision.

Hi Paul, shame about the harbour especially with all that work but completely understandable mate.
I look forward to what you have planned for the year Paul, always interesting and enjoyable, cheers for now, John

Paul. A wise decision, I think. Though the harbour could have been extremely attractive scenically, I think it would have been a nightmare to operate.
I look forward to the next installment. Pete.

Yes Pete I felt the same and I know little of train operations, so decided I love modelling, hence the teardown, Cheers Paul

Thanks for the update, and well done on the changes. While the Folkestone Harbour would have been really interesting to see, and would be great for shunting enthusiasts, it had been a bit of a nightmare for you from the beginning, and it seems didn't really fit with what you want out of your railway. So a very positive development.
You can never have enough storage lines on a model railway, so definitely leave open the opportunity to continue that lower level line.

Mate, well I for one am sad to see 'Folkstone' go - it was a lovely project - but I quite understand your reasoning and it does make sense. I am certainly looking forward to seeing more of your scenic work and for sure it means the layout will get finished sooner. It'll be great to see your layout looking more like the South Coast and Downs rather than some grubby old slate quarry! (No offence to grubby old slate quarries meant!) And your weathering work is something to behold, so authentic looking, and reminding me of those old black and white documentaries like 'The Night Train'.
    A brave decision, well done.
Looking forward to a great 2022.

Paul. Just a hiccup in yourIdeas, If I'm right the lower storage could be the Saltwood end of the Sandling Junction line. That would be more accurate to the Sandling - Hythe line perhaps. Just Love your enthusiasm, Well Done enjoy the space you've created. As I think is has improved now

Painful to watch but I reckon you made the right decision now the space is clear. ‘Less is more’ as they say. Good luck with taking the layout further through 2022 and beyond.

A hard decision Paul, it felt like watching the Beeching cuts, but I really feel like you’ll benefit greatly from the space you’ve created. Less really is more at times. Very Best Wishes, wishing you and yours a happy New Year.

Isn't it amazing how much junk you end storing under the layout. In the end the "Train Shed" becomes the place to put those things I'll use one day. Yeh mine is the same only bigger so more stuff to go in there. Next time I get down there I'll be having a massive clear out.

I did say keep it, but that was because of all the work and effort you put into making it. At the end of the day, it comes down to if you need the space for other things and they are more important then, it has to go. You have a lovely collection of DMU and EMUs, that will keep the branch line busy. Have you thought about fitting a DCC concepts Shuttle device? They seem to work well on Jenny Kirks layout. (Wearyard) Martin. (Thailand)

Of you want help with understanding shunting etc then all you need to do is ask. I’m a professional railwayman with 30 odd years experience, and would happily explain it to you or give you any help you might need

You'll be sorry! I know I am disappointed to see it go, and I also sense my viewing interest has just fallen 50% with the disappearance of the harbour. Still, you have a lot of railway remaining to keep you occupied and entertained, so have at it me boyo.

As you say you are not a railwayman. Not understanding the real railway, makes you vulnerable to the commercial behaviour and marketing of the model manufacturers. Who are obviously in the game to make a profit. They won't for example tell you that if you want a real "Model Railway" you should NOT use clip together track systems. Due to the Laws of Physics. Clip together track systems use curvature so sharp that in reality even a tram would be unable to negotiate. Such sharp curves have a detrimental effect on the life expectantcy of expensive model locos. Further it also means that the locos power is mainly absorbed trying to negotiate such sharp curves, leaving little power available to haul a train. Clip together track by its nature of frequent rail joins causes electrical resistance, and a far higher chance of stuttering and jerkiness, and of course derailments.
The only sensible short cut to the nightmare of learning everything necessary to obtain your dream layout, is to join a good model railway club. Where all the pitfalls are already understood, and can be explained rapidly and demonstrated. Which is one of the main reasons for the existence of model railway clubs. The skills needed can therefore be learned rapidly from those who already have the skills. It will probably save you thousands of pounds, and get you to your dream layout far quicker. You CANNOT learn what you need to know from the internet, for the simple reason you cannot identify what is being shown or suggested, is by another beginner or a qualified expert !!!!
