I have watched so many of your videos during my basement bathroom install, thank you so much. I did everything from framing a new wall, covering bulkheads, drywall, replacement of rough and finish plumbing, install fiberglass base, and tiling the floor and shower. I could not have done it without your help. Love the simplicity and your explanation gives confidence that we can do it ourselves and come out with a great finish. Thank you Jeff!

Do you have a separate video on the rough plumbing for the shower pan? I’m converting a tub to a shower pan. The drain will be on the right side. I’ve learned so much from you. Your videos are awesome!

  • @mycats7321

You made this look so easy! I'm hoping it will go as smoothly when it comes time for my installations. Got a shower & a tub in separate bathrooms to install.
I'm debating whether or not to replace my cast iron tub coated in porcelain bc the porcelain got scraped off on part of it (reckless deadbeat tenants). The idiots who installed the tub put the P-trap right through a joist-- they cut ALL the way through the joist for it so I'm going to have to make a support box under it & I will probably go with a direct drain (P-trap under the drain rather than the overflow). I'm probably going to cram some wood in between the cut in the joist to offer more support and sandwich it with other boards to add extra support along with the box bc I'm paranoid about structure failing.

I have an Oatey 2'" drain that I will use along with Oatey liner and mortar dry pack for my slope. How high above the slab do I glue the Oatey drain? Flush with the cement? What shall I backfill around the drain? Mortar dry pack or cement?

My friend had one installed and is unhappy that there is standing water in the shower after using the shower.

Or are they designed to be installed level and you get what you get?

When installing on a second floor in between joists, are you supposed to support the drain? And how if so? There isnt room enough to have a p trap with a 2x4 under affixed to the joists for support.. i was thinking that when the drain is inserted then the support will be from the actual drain on the pan and that little bit of give in the pipes will act as a flex joint whereas rigid would be more prone to cracking with any movement.. i wouldnt think the pvc joints would leak from that movement over time as they are welded together.. right?

Hi Jeff. I've been binging your channel as we are looking to renovate our master bath. We have a small corner walk-in closet (more like a step in) and a shower right next to it. We need more closet space. I would like to remove my shower completely from that area and relocate it to where our unused, large jacuzzi tub is, and expand the closet into the old shower area . Our home is on a concrete slab and the shower base is concrete. How would we remove the shower base and make it level with the rest of the floor? Plug the shower drain and properly cut off plumbing? Home was built in 1992.

I have small standing shower now which is over a tiled floor that is on basement concrete. I have dismantled my old standing shower and found that my drain hole is about 15"X15" away from the wall. I'm trying to retrofit a house type shower to the black pipe of a mobile home. I have the "tail" from the pan that has to go into the black pipe but I can't figure out how to get it in because I can't see where the end of the tail is to be sure it goes in; it may just push the pipe aside. I don't want to have to tear out a wall or tear out the underneath. I've had the old shower out for two weeks and I'm really getting tired of it not being fixed. I'm at my wit's end.

From the looks of it the vapor barrier has been compromised in many places and shaudky installed. As I now will be running water to the washing machine and sink can I leave the existing drywall up using it as a barrier for my plumbing and installing a new 2 x 4 wall over it using additional styrofoam insulation without a vapor barrier or will that cause me problems in the future. What did you use as a sand mix here, jeff? Literally wet sand? Or is this mortar?

Hi Jeff, you mention placing a sand mix to level the shower base. What is a sand mix? There are many different types of mortar,
what do you recommend? Thank you, Ken

hello can anyone know in apartment on 5th floor if i want to remove the old shower pan and to make one level with tiles what do i have to use underneath ? waterproof concrete and then the tiles? or is something else on top of the concrete before i add the tiles ? and what about around lets say do i have to secure something around the tiles ? can someone please answer me

In my experience the best waterproofing system for a custom shower is schluter systems. You need to check with your condo board to determine the acceptable course of action so that your insurance is valid in the event of a water problem down the road.

Is it necessary to put down plastic or cement board on top of the wood subfloor before adding the sand / cement mix?

      @ho_cho_e_vi_aisong_mai_tro1061 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think cement board on top of the wood subfloor is too thick. In all videos I watched, they all put mortar directly on the wood subfloor, this will be problem later when they want to remodel again, ie removing the old shower pan. The purpose of mortar under shower pan is to create support so it will not crack when stepping on it .

I've seen a lot of builders level it with some shims and few hundred pounds of cement bags ontop then use closed cell foam under it at some of the pre-wire houses around here. they are pretty good about using enough for it to feel solid under and not push up or out. their building a few hundred houses a year so I'm sure that plumbers had enough experience to know how much to spray before he drops the pan back down.

Sure but I am teaching the diy community , not running a trade school. I would never suggest a home owner use spray foam for the lack lof experience issue.

My issue is i have a 4.5x4 shower area with plumbing straight in and a drain on the far right of the shower. Seems impossible to find a pan that works. They all have them in center or under the shower head...

You could have poured a super thin layer of floor leveler. Its like liquid cement that levels itself as liquid does then sets as cement does. Instant level floor over night.

Keep in mind that self leveling concrete is only to be used on a solid concrete floor. If you use it on a floor with joists then over time it will crack and or pop tiles.

since there's no Plumbing in the stall that I could see are you able to test the drain to make sure it doesn't leak I'm assuming maybe you hooked it up to the outlet pipe below and maybe put in a bucket of water and was able to reserve it for a period of time to make sure that the gasket and everything was sealed tight and on the sand mixture I saw another video where they put the sand mixture underneath the whole shower pan I'm assuming in your case because of the leveling issues you just added into those areas that needed to be level and that was enough to keep the pan from moving also

This particular shower pan is very rigid and has structure to the outside edges. all that was needed was to level and provide some strength on the interior of the pan. Really not necessary but most home owners don't like the feel of moving acrylic so it is best to fortify the install this way.

Never use plumber's putty to seal the drain. Clear silicone only. The putty breaks down and manufacturers state not to use it. As a plumber I have had to repair many drains which requires cutting open the ceiling below.
