  • Trying to make a decision? Discuss differences with linking words of contrast to speak with clarity and with an easy-to-follow structure.
    In daily life decision-making - and on an IELTS or TOEFL exam - you'll need to highlight differences between people, places, and things.
    It's common to discuss differences in English conversation to get help from others when making a final choice. Contrast linking words help you do just that.
    Common English linking words of contrast differences:
    - in contrast to
    - on the other hand
    - whereas
    - as opposed to
    - different from
    And more.
    When you compare options in English - two smartphones, two vacation packages, two job offers - you will notice the similarities, of course.
    ➡ But it’s the differences that will likely help you make a final decision or determine what is the right choice.
    When you use linking words of contrast, you can talk about the differences with increased clarity and coherence.
    Similar to a recent lesson I did on how to compare in English, in this Confident English lesson today, you’ll learn how to contrast differences in English using contrast linking words so you can easily discuss your options, distinguish the differences, and make the best choice.

    Hi! Do we need a comma before "as opposed to" when we use it in the middle of the sentence? I saw in the Cambridge dictionary that a comma is necessary.

    • @Speakconfidentenglish
      @Speakconfidentenglish  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good question. If the words 'as opposed to' and the information provided with those words are not essential to the sentence, then yes, when need commas. However, if all the words are essential for a complete sentence, then we do not. I hope this helps.

    Annemarie, would it be possible to prepare material on employee evaluation? A question about teamwork is often asked during periodic employee evaluations. This is not an easy topic. It's not just cooperation, there are vertical activities (army, office) or horizontal activities (brainstorming in a corporation). It's hard to describe specific examples: how? When? „Just discuss situations in English”. And another trap question - professional ethics.
