    Chipping in on the Howl's Moving Castle conversation: I had the same feeling with the movie that the end didn't make sense, so I went and read the book and OH MY GOD, it's such a good middle grade. But they did heavily alter the story for the movie, that's why it doesn't make a lot of sense. The book makes perfect sense and I wholeheartedly recommend, it's a relatively small book
    I still watch the movie all the time though, it just warms my heart

    There's something so satisfying about reading through a full draft... I would have to take notes!

    In the mood for love is perfection. The setting, the costumes, the actors… just amazing

      Absolutely stunning! There was a rumor when the film came out that the two leads were having an affair but it was untrue. The chemistry between them 🥰🥰🥰🥰 The other movie that made me feel this much was Moonlight.

    It's always fascinating to see how a writer's processes change from WIP to WIP. Congrats on starting draft two!

      It was a good time watching so many things I've been wanting to get to for ages! Now I need a new list of movies, haha!

    Very helpful to see your revision process. I finished a first draft of a historical fiction a week ago and have set it aside for a few weeks before starting revisions. Also, love Greer Garson. My favorite is Mrs. Miniver. So melodramatic and she married the man who played her son, which makes for extra fun watching.

      Congrats on finishing the first draft!! Enjoy the break before revisions begin 😊
      I saw Mrs. Miniver probably 25 years ago and I don't remember that much about it, so I should probably see it again! Greer Garson is always so graceful and lovely to listen to.

    I think like my book, though mine is contemporary romance not historical, your book has fake marriage or marriage of convenience tropes and slow burn romance which are my favorites. I enjoyed so much writing my book and from your reactions I can tell you are enjoying your work too. Wish you luck.

      Marriage of convenience is my faaaaaavorite! This one is sort of half marriage of convenience and half arranged marriage? But it's definitely got a bit of a slow burn to it, too.
      And thank you! I hope your writing project is going well 😊

      @MeredithPhillipsWrites thank you. it's going well. I am one draft away from the final draft of book one, and I already wrote the first act of the second book. My biggest issue is that I'm not native speaker, but I prefer writing in English, so it brings a whole set of new obstacles for me to overcome but with time and patience I believe I can write at least a below average/average book. Keep going...

    I believe Sophie took Calcifer out of the house to disconnect the house from that location so Howl would stop trying to protect it and get himself killed in the process. Then they removed themselves from the area and off to safety, while Howl was left to fight in a way that hopefully wouldn't get himself killed. Without them being there he could just fight the war, not worry about protecting Sophie (which he said was what was important to him) and the others. The only way to disconnect Howl's magic from the house was to remove Calcifer from it. That's how I understand it at this point anyway.
    Howl's Moving Castle is a family favorite here and every time we watch it we pick up something new that we missed before--it is so full of small things that are easy to miss the first (or even fifth) time through. The more I watch it the better it gets for me.
    I must say, Sophie in the beginning (when the change has first happened to her) with all of her grumbling commentary is my absolute fave! And Calcifer clinging to that teeny tiny bit of remaining log just cracks me up. Also, Sophie dragging Howl up the stairs when he's totally lost it and...(well, spoiler)...but the look on her face--LOL!
    It WAS true love for Turnip Head which is why his curse was broken. Sadly, though, his love was unrequited. But hey--he is a free man, able to go live his life again which is way better than being stuck under that curse.
    Fun fact, I have a Turnip Head sticker on my laptop, right next to my big Pride and Prejudice "you have bewitched me" sticker. Both stories have a special place in my heart.
    Glad you watched Howl's Moving Castle, hun. Such a good movie.
    Other Ghibli recs: Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, and Ponyo. All are really good and not too dour. We love Spirited Away as well but it isn't quite as fun and fluffy.

      AHHH okay that makes more sense. I definitely want to watch it again to find all the little bits I missed the first time through!
      I still want a follow up movie for Turnip Head 😩Poor boy!
      And thanks for the recs! I'll add them to my list.

    Good job at not touching your draft for a week. It’s hard to try not to dive back in. Lord of the Rings!!! Yes!!! One of my faves. Lagaan, never heard of that and I like Bollywood movies. I will have to rent that one. Great video as always!!!!

    • @MeredithPhillipsWrites
      @MeredithPhillipsWrites  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Had to have LOTR on there! I was in high school when the movies were coming out and they were a pivotal part of my teen years. And they're just darn good movies.
      You HAVE to watch Lagaan!! It's a sports movie about cricket, which I knew nothing about and normally wouldn't be interested in, but the way the movie is structured, you learn about it as you go or you can understand what they need to do within the game to win or score points or whatever. Super high stakes, incredible cast, and you can't beat A.R. Rahman for music.

    long time lurker just popping in to say i love your movie breakdown in this! have you seen "a matter of life and death" (1946)? i saw it for the first time last year and found it so incredibly charming, you might enjoy it if you haven't seen it yet! and i've been meaning to watch "in the mood for love" for literally 15 years, i think this is a sign i should finally do it!

    • @MeredithPhillipsWrites
      @MeredithPhillipsWrites  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven't seen that, but I'll add it to my list! I do love David Niven.
      I hope you enjoy ITMFL just as much as I did if you watch it! I can't wait to watch it again, haha

    I'm going to start reading through my first draft this weekend, and I am terrified that it will be a lot of "you done messed up A-a-ron." I am going to be taking very unspecific notes during my first read through, because I don't want to bog down the process. *takes a deep breath* Let's see what happens! Haha

    • @MeredithPhillipsWrites
      @MeredithPhillipsWrites  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good luck!! There will undoubtedly be spots that need help (as is true for any first draft), but there will be good stuff, too. Look for those positives so you don’t get weighed down with the negatives!

      Make sure you note the things you like about it too. It helps with motivation if you have those pat on back moments.

    Studio Ghibli recs: spirited away, and princess mononoke. Do NOT watch grave of fireflies. Do not. Seriously, I’m a huge fan and that film destroyed me.

      Okay, crossing Grave of Fireflies off the list for now at least, haha!
