- With a small house you have to think of other ways to store food in a freeze proof environment. We have always wanted a root cellar and decided to once again make it multi-use. The guest house on top will be available for friends and family to spend time with us and still have their own space. It also protects the root cellar below. It is finally finished and organized and we couldn't be happier with it.

Don't forget to label the jars or the shelf fronts, for those times that you ask the hubby or a kid to run down and grab you a jar of something. It even helps when you ask them to put stuff away.

Very nice! When I saw your pantry in your main house I knew you must have more bulk storage somewhere. Food storage is so important! Cooking from scratch is essential for our health now because of all the chemicals and additives in food at the grocery stores. I need to get canning soups as well!

Hi. Thanks for posting your shed basement video. I’m planning a similar build in iron county Wisconsin and was glad to see yours kept at 32 and above in a similar climate. My land is off grid so I’m planning to keep my batteries and inverter in the freeze protected basement. I’m planning to put some foam insulation around the outside of the basement walls.
I purchased a delivered shed and am planning to have to placed above the basement.

Thank you for this. We are off.grid, and I'm thinking of turning our old bathhouse into a place to store my canned goods. Tho it's not underground, this gives me some good ideas. Do you have any suggestions on what I should use for insulation? We live in Maine so our temps are similar to yours.
It’s the geo-thermal that keeps it from freezing, anything above ground would need some type of heat source. Thanks for watching!

Is the vent pipe in the wall by the steps/ladder for moisture control?
Yes, we neglected to mention those. There is a cold air in vent and a warm air vent that goes out flat on the ceiling on the opposite side.
