There are certain songs that you’ve heard since you were a child that have reached the pinnacle of rock and pop. Songs that we all know and sing along to whenever they come on and then are stuck in your heard for days after, and you don’t mind because they’re so great. What I Like About You by The romantics is definitely one of those classics. Well it may surprise you to know that What Like About You was not a hit. I mean you’d just assume that it was a number one smash because of how popular it was and still is. and everybody knows it.
But It only went to #49 on the Billboard Hot 100. We just talked about his a few weeks ago… American Girl by tom Petty and the heartbreakers also wasn’t a hit. A headscratcher for sure. What I Like About You was rebased by the american band the Romantics back in 1980. It was written by original band members Wall Palmer who sang and played Rhythm guitar and harmonica, Mike Skill, the lead guitarist and drummer singer Jimmy Parinos who sand lead on the track.
The Romantics were formed in Detroit Michigan in 1977 as a power pop band with influences ranging from early 50s American rock , MC5, The Stooges, Motown, early Bob Seger and Garage rock. Known for their high energy live show and their Iconic look, that included Red leather suits and black vinyl that was a tip of the hat to Motown artists like The Temptations and the four tops. actually the
The band's first show was on at My Fair Lady Club, a Detroit spot, opening for the New MC5 in 1977. It was actually on Valentines Day. The band were road warriors at first, playing venues all over the east coast and midwest. Then they were signed by Nat Weiss’ Nemperor label and they recored their self titled debut in 1979 it was produced by Pete Solley who was a member of Procal Harumph and Whitesnake and later produce records for Oingo Boingo and Motorhead.
Actually The Romantic’s true record debut was the 1978 "Little White Lies” for Spider records followed by the Bomp! single "Tell It to Carrie Both of which were re recorded for their debut.
The first album sold about 200K copies driven by the radio play and concert staple What I like About You which they’d been playing for awhile. The song's "Hey, uh-huh-huh" refrain was influenced by the Yardibirds One under Sideways Down as well as Chuck Berry’s song Back in the USA.

I have a hard time understanding what is Power Pop and what isn't. I would have said at the time that Hall and Oates were Power Pop mainly because they were not considered cool at all and even labeled by some as bubble-gum pop because a lot of teenage girls loved them. Same goes for Wham!. Both are more respected now - specifically George Michael and even Andrew Ridgely's solo work, which I really like. Hall and Oates are better understood now for the music and not the image.

Was in a band in the late 80s, did a 20
Minute medley that started with On the Darkside (Eddie and the Cruisers), then Cherry, Cherry (Neil Diamond), Rock in the USA (John Mellencamp) What I like About You (The Romantics), we always got a kick out of covering 4 songs in 20 minutes playing the same 3 chords continuously. I was a club DJ in the 80's & our Sunday night crowds were a lot more rock n' roll than Friday or Saturday nights.

Great video! I love this channel.
I was at a party in the early to mid 80s and the chick hosting the party had an extensive vinyl collection. We were all, or mostly, an assortment of long haired, Johnny come lately hippie stoners. This guy was dominating the turntable, playing 60s and 70s classic rock and while everyone was digging it, it was a very low energy event. Well, turntable boy had to hit the can and I took over as DJ. I had noticed a Ronantics album and immediately put on What I Like About You. The girls all perked up, started dancing and I was dancing with them. Eventually the other guys started dancing with the chicks and it was a high energy scene. When the turntable king returned from relieving himself, he was told by the hostess that he was relieved of his command and I was in charge and I played every record she had with songs I knew from the clubs. Everyone had a great time, including classic rock guy, who danced with most of the girls. All because I had fallen in love with What I Like About You. Though it didn't last, by the end of the night the hostess was hugging and smooching on me. Good times.

I saw Aerosmith open for them (Ray Davies) back in the early 70s. After the show I was freakin' out over Aerosmith because the Stones, at the time, seemed to be fading away so when I said to all my friends 'They re going to be HUGE, the next Stones, everybody chuckled. This song came out at a strange time also and I, again, predicted they were going to take off and while MTV did give them the exposure, it just seemed that no one at that time was into 'power pop', the 2:45 second AM radio hit song. Had this song came out in say '64, during the Brit Invasion, they would have been HUGE chart toppers, a #1 for sure but instead .... ? Their other problem is it was a hard song to follow. Nothing they put out after it was close to the energy of 'WILAY'. The Stones 'Satisfaction' (still my all time #1 fav song) was another high pressure 'Top that, boys' but they did it, came back swingin' with 'Get Off My Cloud' followed by Honky Tonk Women'. They had 'it', a nearly impossible bar to leap over. Ditto for Aerosmith. I hope, for their sake, the commercials and movie $s provided them a good living at least.
Personally, I had a ball with this song, Thanks for the fun and the memories guys !!

Professor you should spotlight the most versatile musician of all time Joe Jackson who still releases great music from covering Duke Ellington, to pop/rock and new wave as well as releasing in 1986 the first studio album recorded live in front of an audience. Did two shows and released the best versions and had the audience hold their applause. So cool at least back then. He was and is so much more then “ stepping out” and
“Is she really going out with him” started out one of the 3 angry young men of rock back in the late 70’s along with Elvis Costello and has done soundtracks for movies, a jazz big band album at the height of his career long before the mid to late 90’s Jazz swing bands were all the rave like Cherry Poppin daddies and squirrel nut zippers and yet Joe did it in 1981. Cool subject …… just saying.

It was THE go-to song for college cover bands in the mid-1980s, even before the Bud Light commercial...an enormous crowd-pleaser that got everyone on their feet at fraternity parties. When I first got Joel Whitburn's pop annuals of the Billboard charts and I got stats on how songs tracked through the Billboard Hot 100, this song's peak rank became one of my favorite trivia questions. It never even made it to Casey Kasem's AT40. Incredible! Glad you dedicated an episode to this song. Totally worthy cause!

I remember watching Rock Palace on a Saturday night and they were on. They played Talking In Your Sleep, a song that was pretty inescapble at the time and then at the end of the show they played some catchy upbeat number the drummer sang. I was blown away because it was so unlike the hit we were hearing all the time. Hearing this story shows how ridiculous the labels were and still are. A song that had real crossover appeal they do not support and let them fall into obscurity. I was working at a record store at the time the song was revived from the beer commercial. The label came out with a Greatest Hits album to capitalize on the success of the commercial and I'll never forget my boss asking me the last time I heard that song. I told him the last time I saw a beer commercial. Truthfully, I'd never heard it other then one time on a syndicated late night show.

While I agree that "What I Like About You" wasn't a massive hit when it was first released in 1979, I would argue that it had already become a huge rock radio staple long before the beer commercials in the late 80s. When The Romantics released "Talking in Your Sleep" in 1983, it shot up to #3 on the charts and made The Romantics a household name. At that point, many rock and pop stations started playing "What I Like About You" a lot more often to piggyback the success of "Talking in Your Sleep", causing both songs to get tons of airplay.
