  • Coming up the two principals from an 80 rock band that is a true mystery… Wally Palmer and Mike Skill of the Romantics explain their 1983 #1 hit Talking In Your Sleep… First of all they had two huge hits that everyone knows… Talking in Your Sleep and What I Like About You...Only What I Like About You wasn’t actually a hit. It was sung by the drummer and got a lot of Mtv and radio play but stalled at #49 Then Talking in Your Sleep went to #1 in 1984 and in addition it was top 3 on all of the charts. Dance, Rock and Pop... It seemed like they were poised for stardom, THEN they found out that their managers had been misappropriating the profits earned by the band from its records and live performance since day one and the lawsuit that followed kept the band from recording anything for over a decade…. Up next this band tells the story of their #1 hit and how they came back from an 11 year hiatus to reclaim their legacy..

I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs. s. It’s the story of a band that had 3 hits and then disappeared for 11 years due to a lawsuit that stole their best years from them as a group. I’m talking about the Romantics… They burst onto the scene with the 1980 classic What I like about you that has become one of the most played songs on classic rock radio but it was not a hit song. It stalled at #49… then a few years later the band released the song Talking in your Sleep and it shot to #3 pop as well as #2 on the rock charts and #1 on the dance charts. A follow up song one in a million crept into the top 40 after that and everything was looking up for the new wave power pop band then their next album Rhythm romance completely tanked… NO singles hit the top 40 and they were dropped from their label... and then they found out their management had been misappropriating the profits earned by the band from its records and live performances.
Also one of their early hits (the aforementioned "What I Like About You") had been licensed for use in television commercials without the band's knowledge or approval. So to take back their legacy the Romantics filed a lawsuit against their management in 1987, and the legalities involved prevented the band from recording or releasing new music until the mid-1990s. as the band won their lawsuit against its former management and had the freedom to record again it also guaranteed that future earnings from the licensing of Romantics songs would go to the band). from there the band’s song would feature in many films and compilations from the best of the 80s and they would tour again and still do so to this day.
Coming up the singer Wally Palmer and guitarist Mike Skill from the Romantics tell us the story of one of the iconic song of the 80s Talking In youR sleep and some of their other hits and how they came back after an 11 year hiatus...

I remember being at a prom in the 80s and asking the DJ to play What I Like About You. He said no. It’s not a dance song. We continued to ask and he finally played it an hour later. The dance floor flooded and everyone was singing and dancing to it.

..yes..I think a lot of 1980's bands/musicians/artists would have squeezed in a couple more albums during the decade if they had known how the music scene would change in the early/mid 1990's...a lot of them put out an album per year in the mid 1970's-early 1980's, then started going 2-4 years between albums from the mid-'80's on, sometimes longer....several put out a hit album say, 1984, 1987, then 1992-93..only to discover they were now no longer relevant...in hindsight, if they had only put out an album 1984, 1986, 1987, 1989...I always wished Def Leppard had put out more albums in the 1980's...and as a fan of Van Hagar, I really wish they had put out 2 more albums in the time frame they were together...

WAY bigger hit Down Under. Made it all the way to #2. Also a Top 30 hit in Canada. West Coast AOR/melodic pop-rock singer Michael Morales' 1989 cover of the classic hit made it to #28 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was the follow up to his Top 10 hit "Who Do You Give Your Love To?" - and I do believe the Romantics Jimmy Marinos played drums and sang backup on the Morales version of the track. NOT at all a good cover of the song. And Aussie bubblegum pop-rock band 5 Seconds of Summer's cover from 2014 stunk even more than the Morales version.

What I Like About You and Middle of the Road by the Pretenders had awesome harmonica solos. Its a shame the band was stalled by industry greed.
Gerry Rafferty was forced to cut an album for label he didn't like. There was a toy store in the town where he had to record and would stop there to buy a toy to suprise his daughter. It was the one shining thing out of the ordeal and he turned it into the song, "Mattie's Rag". Its cool to hear about artists that turn a bad phase into something positive. Aretha Franklin. Stevie Wonder. The Romantics. Grand Funk Railroad. White Stripes. The Beatles were influenced by Motown. Iggy Pop and MC5 influenced punk. Aretha and Stevie and Motown all influenced soul and R&B and funk including Prince. Of course Michael Jackson comes out of Motown as well. Bob Seger and Glenn Frey were huge in the 70's and 80's.

Went to see the romantics in concert somewhere around 83-84. I was 12 or 13, my sister was 2 years older, and had to take me along. My parents said it was to “keep her out of trouble”. The auditorium had 8 ft buffet tables on their sides as a stage barricade. We were right up front, I had my hand on one of the tables, and one of my sisters friends slid in between me and my hand. Inevitably, the crowd surged forward, and she was pinned between my hand and my body. She starts dancing, shaking her butt, giving me cute grins, and not a drop of blood got above mid chest the rest of the night. Don’t remember much of the show, just remember being smashed in to her, her swinging her butt, and me being dizzy for two straight hours. Great times!!!

I have only 1 regret in my past. I had a chance to audition (drummer) for the Romantics in '91 or '92 its a bit foggy now. A girl (who shall remain nameless) is the sister of one of the guys had been catching our shows around Hollywood for about 6-8 months. She told the band about me. I turned it down because we were on the edge of a deal....that fell through 4 months later. I know I would have slayed that audition (In all confidence not arrogance) truly my only regret. Recently, I reached out to one of the guys in the band via Instagram and told him who I was and the story. Woulda coulda shoulda. Even my band mates when I told them months later said I was a fool. Live and learn.

Sad story but good of you to share it. I sometimes wonder what it must be like to be a band who had one hit, for example, and then that was it. Or where bands or individuals missed out on opportunities. I was told recently a true story about a former member of a very successful eighties band who had the chance to become Steve Clark's replacement in Def Leppard after he died, but decided not to as it would be too raw/ problematic to step into his shoes. Not fair to name the band or individual but it is a true story. I bet he regrets it now as his life would have been radically different for the last thirty years if he had stayed with Def Leppard.
