What happened at the village was a shitshow the Elder started. One he could've easily avoided if he honored their contract with Gaetan - something he could've done easily based on the wealth he held in his home. Sure Gaetan may have wiped out the village, but the villagers that tried to murder him to avoid paying him started it. And Geralt is probably the last person who has any right to pass judgement on a Witcher who was caught in the act in the wrong place at the wrong time - especially if Gaetan was still high on the effects of whatever potions he was still under the influence of. As from what I understand some Witcher Potions can highten the Bloodlust of their consumer. Not something a Human would want to try and piss off like the Village Elder did.
