    BB,
    That is a “fair” review of the Penn Pursuit in my opinion... I am not a tester or expert, but I have used spinning reels here on the gulf coast since I was 5 years old. That translates to > 55 years. I graduated from a Zebco 33 to a Mitchell 300. (Still have one of those old Mitchell 300s. Right handed cast / left handed crank seemed natural for me. Until recently I used spinning reels as disposables. Use to failure point and replace. Several (various maker / models) lasted many years. One of my all time favorite rigs (Abu Garcia Reel / 10ft Eagle claw medium heavy rod) was pulled overboard at middle bay light around 1980. That rig had layer waste to large Mahi, Mangrove Snapper, Kings, Jack Cavalier, Bull Red, Black drum... I would likely still have it.
    By the way... Graphite is a superior material and should hold up to all normal wear and tear.
    Like you shared, the drag system is Penn’s best.
    I bumped up to the 6000 size for set rods so that I had Bull Reds, Big Uglies, and nuisance Cow Nose Rays covered. However, my 4000s have been exposed to all such and faired well. The 6000 allows me Togo up to 30lb braid. Paired with 12 ft rods and 4 oz weight, I can get a lot of distance casting. Getting out past the cow nose is important to me.
    Bottom line... high use folks like yourself are qualified to critique tackle and are high frequency users.
    Most general public, occasional users, would do well to listen. This line of Penn reel is a cost effective choice. By he way... the 6000s I got were cheaper than the 4000s. Volume and popularity.... supply and demand.
    Best BB!

      Thanks so much! I can’t imagine the amount of changes you have seen in reels over the years.
      I do have a Penn Battle 6000 that I use a lot, and the 6000 is a great size for those bigger fish we catch in the surf!

    I have one of these. Very smooth for the price. I will say they are not the same size as other 4000 size reels I have, these are a little smaller. Next to my older Daiwa 4000, the Penn looks like a 2500 size reel. Good for small to medium fish. No worries yet.

    I've been using the pursuit III 2500 for 10 months or so to catch bait (everything from baby goatfish in 20 ft to mackerel scad in 80+ feet), baby GTs, and the occasional bonefish off the kayak and it's still at least functional (I think that's saying a lot considering how much salt this thing's been dunked in). I did have to clean rust from the anti reverse clutch springs (I think they're called?) a couple times with a Q tip and some corrosion X, and the pitting on the main gear is starting to get worse. It definitely is not happy anymore when cranking under any kind of load. However, for 30 something bucks or w/e I paid at the time, seems like it was worth it.

    Good review Brad. I’m not clear on the order of good, better best on Penn line. I’ve got a couple of Battle II (4000 & 5000) and think they are salt-water approved. Could you clarify please?

    • @BeardedBrad92
      @BeardedBrad92  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The order is the Wrath, Pursuit, fierce, battle, spinfisher and slammer. The spinfisher and slammer are the only 2 that are fully sealed. The Battle II is a great reel. I have one as well. It does have a metal frame which helps a lot with durability. It also has sealed bearings which is a huge benefit for saltwater fishing.

    This is the third fierce series reel combo ur2.pl/2314 I've bought and I can't say enough about the value. I work these reels and rods pretty hard because I fish several times a week on Jetties and in the surf, so they can beat up but they've never let me down and are easy to maintain. Great value!

    • @BeardedBrad92
      @BeardedBrad92  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BeardedBrad92 I ordered a 4000 before I saw your comment. I hope it's not too big for the rod. I'm using it for catfishing mostly. I have Ambassadeur's, but I had an Ugly Stik spinning rod I needed a reel for. Hopefully it's not too big

    • @BeardedBrad92
      @BeardedBrad92  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It won’t be too big. Main reason for going to a bigger size reel is lime capacity and drag. If you can get away with smaller reel it just helps on the weight. 4000 will be just fine, just a little heavier

    How did you get the braid to evenly lay on the spool? I’ve tried shimming the spool to the point where the clicker doesn’t even make contact with the gear on the shaft and it still stacks line at the top of the spool like it’s not going high enough on the upward stroke.

    • @BeardedBrad92
      @BeardedBrad92  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the 4000 size is a good size. It’s light enough that you can throw kites and not wear yourself out too quick but it’s also got enough drag and line capacity to fish for black drum and red fish
