I have personally witnessed a 8 oz torpedo weight and 14/0 treble hook go through a Seagull and also a aluminum Jon boat. We used homemade 7' 6" bamboo rods that out preformed any other rod. The regulation for a snagging rod in Kentucky was 7' 6" or shorter. Our homemade snagging rods had only 2 eyes. The tip top eye and a large 1" to 1 1/2" guide eye. The tip top eye was epoxy glued to a 1/4" steel rod that was 6" long that was epoxy glued in the bamboo and reinforced with 2 stainless steel hose clamps. The reel was held on with hose clamps and the entire rod was wrapped with black electrical tape. The more guide eyes you have on a rod, the more resistance you will have on the casting distance. I wouldn't recommend only 2 eyes on any manufacturer rod. Excellent video! Thank you.
I've been long casting the Tx coast for over 30 years. I'd say no difference between the 2 as far as this video goes. Just the difference in strength that was used could have made the difference. You probably could not even tell the difference in strength used. You would have to take at least 3 cast per each rig and then average them out. Also take a few minutes after the long walk before you cast again. I think just about everything else I could add has already in the comments.
I am SO HAPPY that I got a Ugly Stick 12’ Bigwater coming to me from Amazon Prime (FREE 30 Day Trial) for $80! -AND my previous 9 ft rod snapped on me on the cast (Mr. Catfish rod). But my PENN Fierce II 8000 size reel has survived 2 SNAPPED rods! The 1st rod snap was my beloved PENN Fierce II 10 ft rod. I can’t wait for my Big Water to arrive! 😁
I use a shimano vortex 15foot surf rod and either a 4 or 5oz sand grabber sinker (sputnik for Americans) I range anywhere from 130 meters to 200 meters depending on wind and other conditions. My reel is a cheap no name chinese reel which is loaded with cheap chinese braid (30lb) and a 50lb mono shock leader so I can really load up that rod during a cast. I do a pendulum cast , not the official type competition pendulum cast but my own version of it that works for me. My sinker hangs down to just below the the biggest line guide ring on the rod to start my cast. It took quite a bit of practice out in a paddock on the farm to get it as good as I could. I don't always have to cast long distance sometimes the fish are in close like 30 meters from the shore so check by casting different distances until you hit where the fish are hanging out. Hope this info helps you catch more fish..... Cheers from NZ
The reel and line you use will have just as much impact on cast distance as the rod. The narrower the line diameter the better. Also your reels spoon makes a huge difference too. You also want a reel with a very slow oscillation rate. Finally you want to make sure your spool is completely filled with line. If every yard matters to you the u will also gain some distance by getting your line wet before the big cast. Nice vid.
I've slung the Ugly Stick 10'M for yrs up & dwn the Chesapeake Bay for yrs & never had a failure...yet! Got 2 Penn Battles 7000 spooled with 20lb Power Pro. Now my wife wants 1, I guess her 7' is no longer enough..lol
Thank you for showing us your comparison test. Helped me confirm a few assumptions. I also appreciate you considering safety as you executed your test. Best regards!
The distance for me is not that far off. I WANT TO KEEP FISHING and not look at my SNAPPED ROD from a cast; Like what happened to my PENN Fierce II 10 ft rod. The PENN Fierce II 8000 reel is good (and all 300 yards of 80lb braid). I want a flexible, strong, durable and dependable fishing rod and I am happy I got a Ugly Stick 12’ Big Water coming to me.
OK, you walked down to the first cast, then ran down to the gate and walked back to your first cast. Then walked back to do the first cast on the US that went out of bounds and over the trees only to be just a little short. Then walked back down and cast the US for a third cast in a few minutes, and got it straight this time and you said by your guesstimation 7 yds. difference. I surmise the walking well over 4 hundred yds. before your final cast of the US could have hampered your ability to cast it the 7 yds. it would have needed to to make the contest a tie. :) :) Just saying. :)
Dear sir, may I suggest next time, moving the reel from the first rod to the second rod to counter act any spooling differences, also performing at lest 5 casts for each rod, before moving the reel, to gain an average distance. all the comments about different lines and reels are not so relevant when the rod action is the point of the test. all up a pretty good demo.
So I purchased a 12' Penn Prevail 2 surfrod and I attempted to use it with my 5000 Fierce 2 and a 6000 Pursuit 3...I was frustrated as heck trying to figure out why I was not getting great distances. Well i just learned about long cast reels and the science behind the spool...and apparently a long surf rod means nothing without a long cast reel. Its like putting big mud tires on a truck that is not a 4x4.
Great video, here's a tip to add 15+ yards to that cast. Before cast, make a 90 degree angle from rod tip to leader hanging HALF WAY down rod. While casting use left hand and pull down hard to utilize maximum momentum. Super rocket with this technique (leader halfway down your rod) will improve casting distance for sure. Great video though thanks
@FISHGUM did you work on that form? Can you cast 150 yards yet? I'm about to buy the squadron iii 12ft or the okuma longitude 12ft. What's your take? Or do you have a under 100 dollar 12ft rod I can sling to outer space with my okuma 8000
I was always a spinning rod guy up until about 5 years ago and switched to conventional gear. Their was a lot of swearing and wasted fishing line involved but after i finally got the hang of of a casting reel theirs no going back. 200 plus yard casts are awesome
@kingrider75, Can you recommend a couple of conventional reels for me? I want long casts and I have no idea that conventional reels actually cast farther! I thought it is the other way around since I've never used a conventional reel before! What I want is a conventional reel for casting in the surf for striped bass, bluefish, jacks, and mackerels. If you could list a couple for me I would appreciate it!
When casting at the football field, my I suggest using a golf ball inside a tennis ball. The weight will be between 3½ and 3¾ ozs. you won't get the distance of a lead weight but it will be safer in case of a person/vehicle hit. Another benefit is that you can usually follow the ball flight and tell whether it's going to be a good cast whilst it's still in the air.
Also as others have said, watch some John Holden videos, casting technique really helps. I'm doing an 100yd average with 10' Penn Prevail & Penn Squall 15 chunking around 4ozs.
Yeah he was on the third cast. Breathing hard. So the penn just got his "Fresh" cast. Also Ugly sticks are extremely durable but they can be a sittle more flimsy whereas the penn would be a little more stiff which would help the cast. He went UP and over 2 trees with the ugly so it might not have went as far but was that the sticks fault? the distance was there. He just sent it upwards instead of outwards.
Couple things. First cast, you had more energy to cast. You can hear your voice you were pushing it while walking quickly. Next 2 casts you were more fatigued. Cast 1 and 3 you had better form. Cast 2 you dropped the rod tip early. So for the ugly stik and the 2 yards, it went through 2 trees and only fell 2 yards short? I call it a draw or a slight edge to the ulgy stik.
True, if he would of walked the second weight to where the first landed it would of been further, due to how far left he cast. I reckon it would of beat it by at least 5 if not 10 yards. I also reckon in strong winds the Penn would handle more casting weight and perform better. I'd rather have soft rods though for playing the fish
Pair any one of those rods with the okuma surf 8k and you will be amazed at how much farther you can cast. Plus it has a 42 inch per rotation line retrieval. You don't have to throw as hard to get the bait out and you end up slinging the bait off less.
Hello from Singapore 🇸🇬, good video. My furthest cast was 210m in an actual casting tournament. Rod: 13ft ( conventional overhead rod) Reel: Abu ambassadeur 5500CT MAG ELITE Line: Suffix Synergy 8lb Leader: Varivas Tapered leader (80lb) Weight: 125g We were casting more of the British style pendulum to hit those kind of distances.
Great experiment. To get a really better understanding of which is better would be to be somewhere and do at least 5 casts per rod to see how much variability you would get . More fast would show better results as for distance and consistency in cast to cast. But other than that great demonstration of how far these combos can actually go which is amazing
Thanks Wesley, I do need to cast more for a better trial! I was scared because of the cars and people! I’ll need to get up super early where that location will be virtually empty.
Takes it like a champ I personally have the 11 & 12ft big waters and sometimes i even cast by an oz or two over the recommended and it takes it like a champ
Fred, I like both rods not only due to the construction and name. But the Ugly stick is a bang for the buck. I may purchase both due to my fishing addiction !!!! I hope that helps !!!!
well done!! however l strongly recommend you to get a pair of casting triggers also. Your index finger will appreciate it!! and you will get those extra yards with ease and no suffering. m.th-cam.com/video/1JPg9yatgpQ/w-d-xo.html
Kudos to you for getting out there and testing your rods! Those are great casts, especially since you didn't use your left hand to put more power into the cast. Like you, I don't use the pendulum cast either, nor do I put my sinker on the ground. I think you might get even more distance if you tried the overhead thump cast as described by Ryan White of Hatteras Jack's. You get the left arm into the cast by extending your arms upward, and using your left hand (if you are right handed) to pull down on the end of the rod butt to efficiently load the rod. The left hand provides more power because it travels in a larger arc than the right hand. I know your cast works for you because I've seen the fish that you've caught in some of your other videos, but I'm curious to know if you would get even more distance with the overhead thump cast. Ryan White appears at 7:30 in the SurfcastersJournal Episode #7 Improving Your Cast video on TH-cam. I used to live near a soccer field and that's where I'd compare surf my rods, so I can relate to lines over trees, sinkers slightly off target, and concerns about hitting people or cars. I can cast 2 and 3 ounce sinkers over 100 yards with my 8, 9, and 10 foot rods, but I never cast more than 110 yards or so. I think you are right to use 12 foot rods to get more distance.
never used either rods...but other than casting distance, other things to consider would be sensitivity and weight of the blank. i generally tend to hold the rod whilst fishing. so these two two other factors play a huge role for me. i get similar distance to what you got with my spinning Penn 10" carnage 2 surf rod (3oz lead) casting in surf conditions. if you lengthen the drop a bit more..you can load up the blank more. thanks for sharing.
I have the 12 foot Ugly Stik but much older it has the Fuji line guides on it. I like the durability of Ugly Stiks and the Fuji eyes give it a longer cast.
For more distance I would recommend you a 13 foot surfcasting rod and install a casting trigger . With less effort you 'll get 20 yards than normal. o don't like ugly sticks for surfcastin. Too flimsy... Regards. Fred.
That is impressive for those rods! Imagine if you lengthened the drop, went to a 5oz. sinker and used a full-on pendulum cast. Probably well over 150 yards.
The Ocean master 12 foot surf spinning rod, matched with a Penn spinfisher vi 7500 long cast spooled with 20ib spiderwire x8 braid...you'll get the distance from it and the power, mostly because the line breaks about 5 to 8 IBS more than it says.
Thanks for the video. You would get another 12 yards if your reel was spooled to the brim. The Penn is made of graphite composite so will cast further. Both are made by the same company incidentally. If you really want distance get a long cast spool ( shimano or daiwa) filled with 14lb fireline. Put it on a 14' 6" Abu veritas 3 Piece nano tech surf rod. Made by the same company you will cast 180 yards easily.
The ugly stiks are tried and true. Great bite detection with the 10, 11, 12’ers . So many great affordable rods on the market now but the ugly stick is definitely a good choice for throwing bait rigs.. the the 12’ tsunami Airwave rods rated for up to 6oz are my everyday rods. A strong caster can send a 4oz sinker out over 100yds. The 12’ 3-6oz airwave is nearly the perfect pomp rod. Awesome bite detection Keep your eyes open for old school glass rods like the 11-13’ honey lamiglas or fenwick. So much fun pomp fishing with the old glass rods paired up with 704/706 penn reels
Nice video. I like the side by side comparison. And even just the one cast on each rod give useful info. But from a statistical point of view one cast is not sufficient to say which rod cast further. Lots of variables during the casting process. Wind, power applied, timing, etc. That first cast with the ugly stick went across the field at a diagonal so the distance to the sinker was further than it appeared. I imagine if you took the line and placed it alongside the line of the Shakespeare it actually went further. So you probably need a half dozen casts with each and average the distance. Of course the probability of hitting a car goes up exponentially!! Thanks again for the video...
I agree. I think 10 casts per rod and then swap out the reels(one spool might be fuller with newer line) and then do another 10 casts logging the distances. Wind could be a factor as well! I want to see a consistent difference or not a consistent distance. I think you need to find a safer area to cast them, maybe a farmer's field?
Were the poles of equal lure weight and line capacities? Seems the reels were both the same but did they have the same lbs test?... the ugly stick pole the reel seems to have more line in it....is it exactly the same lengths ?...usually the stiffer pole would cast farther and even more as long as you got the strength to take it to its limits....
I think my form is terrible, I did not have equal line or spooled it to the max on either reel. They did have the same pound test 30lb braid. I’ll get better and rework a vid at some point! Thanks for adding value to this vid by your comments
Casting is great and it is important. However, how will that rod hold up over time? In golf, a driver is replaced by an iron, to a putter. A fishing rod has to do all of the necessary jobs in one hard working piece of equipment. How are the eyelets holding up on that Penn versus the Ugly Stik? Or the handle and grip? Which rod has the best warranty?
Penn and Shakespeare are owned by same company. I've owned the Bigwater, Carnage, and Battalion. The Carnage 2 is the best chunker of the lot, but the Bigwater costs 3x less. I find the Bigwater a bit slow action. The Battalion is my favorite all arounder. Okuma Longitude is better caster than Ugly Stik for about the same cheap price. Squadron is being discontinued.
@@FishGum Cabela's/BassPro house label Offshore Angler rods are good value usually. I owned and liked the Cabela's Salt Pro 12' surf rod for years before replacing it with the Battalion. I've heard good things about their Ocean Master series too. I almost bought the OM 12' version ($190), but got a sales coupon for the Carnage 2 from FISHUSA that brought it down to $187, and I love Penn equipment.
I was able to do some of the same sort of testing at a community outdoor sports area. Using a hunting rangefinder I had basically the same results of casts all easily over 100yds+. On the best days, no head wind, no bait drag, etc etc it's easy to get out 100+yds. Fight a head wind, bait drag your cast distance will drop easily. My rods were either a Tsunami or a Mojo....no significant difference using either one . Where you will gain distance is in the line you are using, the line weight rating, how it's wrapped on the spool, and how much is on the spool. When the spool is filled to edge it' going to throw farther, use a lighter test line (IE 30lb vs 65lb test) your lighter weight will throw further. Nice video!!
Tony, very entertaining video. Don’t forget the sensitivity of the rod as a factor in catching fish. I have three ugly sticks but my oldest one which is 12’ is the better ugly stick. I have a Penn Spinfisher rod but it is only 10’. I did not like it when ugly sticks started using the all metal rod guides on their rods. My older one has ceramic inserts in the guides and will cast further than the new ones. I have heard of some folks who have had more broken lines because of the metal guides. Still I have one and I use it. I like the sensitivity. My favorite rods are from Offshore Angler labeled “Ocean Master”. I have them in three lengths depending on where and what I am doing. I guarantee they will outcast your Penn Squadron II. I say my best cast with the Ocean Master was 150-160 yds. but I couldn’t do it now. There is a long gas main right-of-way just above my house that is my casting zone; I use it mostly to test reels rather than distance. It is about 80 yds. wide by 300 yds. long before some significant hills get in the way. After three rotator-cuff shoulder surgeries my long cast days are now over. One of my favorites for accuracy and enjoyable fishing is an old South Bend Black Beauty 10” rod. I love your videos. I never know what you are going to do next. Keep up the great work! You know I love the vintage reels but the reel has a lot to do with a long cast. I have a Daiwa Emblen X 5500T reel with the long cast spool that is awesome. It’s an older reel but I wouldn’t call it vintage. Also my old Mitchell 488 can really put a line out there!
Man thanks for the recommendations! I don’t have any long casting reels. I’ll see if I can locate the older Daiwia. I too am a fan of offshore angler rods.
Ugly Stiks are great for casting a mile since they have a good backbone and are so durable, Ive casted 100+ yards before on my 6'6" and can consistently cast 60-70 yards with headwinds.
Fast action all the way for longer casts. The faster a rod "snaps straight" (not vibrating) after the initial cast, the less resistance to the line as it spools out.
"fast action" doesn't tell you how fast a rod snaps back though. That only tells you how far along the rod the rod will bend. As someone who uses graphite fast action rods exclusively, they are all not all created equal. Even all fat heavy rods are not created equal. Even all fast action heavy with max 8oz lure ratings are not created equal. The term you're looking for is response/recovery rate. A rod can bend uniformly and be a "slow action rod", but it can 100% still whip back out very quickly. You can have a cheap walmart rod with a fast tip that will not flick a lure worth a crap. It also just takes a different technique to cast a moderate action rod. throwing your body into it as fast as possible in a jerk motion likely wont net you much. Pendulum casting is what is needed for slow action heavy rods, you need that pendulum whip before you cast to really put a huge bend in that rod. One isn't better than the other, but your body will have to adjust to diff casting styles.
I went to get a ugly stick or a okuma longitude 12 feet and but a okuma 65 bait and run reel on it but not sure if I went to get the ugly or the longitude
Another great informative video. It’s pretty amazing how much further braid goes in comparison to mono. That Seagar Smack Down really sends your bait further out. When we went out last time you were slinging your leader with baited hooks out past the sand bar going about the same distance. I’ll let you reach out to them and I’ll continue to go 3/4 distance.
This is so cool. At least your lead flys pretty strait, mine, I give it a biiiiigggg ole slice to the right every time. Great video tony. Keep them coming . God bless and tight lines brother.
A big thing people forget is spooling your line up to the lip of the spool a under filled spool causes resistance and will decrease your casting distance is just as important as your rod choice if not more so but great video good content
I use my Kenor 9 feet. I’m not sure if they still making them mine is about 16 years old but still doing a great job. Flex as the day I bought them. Happy with what I have.
elmasry alhorr Do you mean Kencor? When I was a kid ( I was a big kid ) my father bought a 15' Kencor for himself and a 13" for me. He put a Penn 500 Jig Master on his pole and I got a Diawa Silver Series 7000c. My dad never could cast as good as I could. At my best I might be able to get close to 100yds. Anyway in 2013 I met a family with 6 Kencor Trout poles. They were surprised I knew of Kencor since they had been out of business for 10 years. Too bad, they made great poles.
I'm going with my ugly I also get a good cast on daiwa beefstick , in my conditions getting even 50 yards is a good cast. The wind simply won't allow it. Comparing cost I would stay with the big ugly but want to try the Penn . Nice vid
Thanks for this video. I haven't gotten far at all yet, but I have a Penn fierce 3 6000 I just spooled with 50lb power pro braid. It had 25 lb mono before... I haven't invested properly in a rod yet, but the guy who sold me one to go with the 6000 at Dick's sorta messed me up and talked me into buying an 8'6" Okuma downrigger... It was for casting or trolling reels, and I didn't know it!! I had just gotten started fishing seriously last year, and the idea of surf fishing was super new. I'm a truck driver who has a little time at different beaches so I thought I'd get a setup... I found a near mint vintage Diawa surf rod at a thrift store for $12 I was gonna try out, but I want something a bit more modern!!
Great experiment. I have an ugly sti I and a h2O express, both 10 ft. Like your tip on the glove, slinging heavier weights is hard on the fingers. You may want to consider a video on how to cut one up and its use. Keep the videos coming. God Bless
Do you take into consideration the length of the rig, weight of pyramid sinker, wind speed...I cast 8 oz. Into 15-20 mph winds here in miami to get past the bars because we have a lot of shallow bars that go far out..make it's a little difficult to get to the pompano feeding zone..and takes a toll on my index finger...lol..great video!!!
Im getting 6oz leads 150 yards but in UK we have a better selection of longer stiffer faster actioned and more capable casting rods and reels Im only an average caster at best. I fish with people who get over 200 yards on my setup. And The tournament casters in the UK get 300 yards
I'd like to see you put a go pro camera inside a rubber ball for cushioning, and cast it out. Might be pretty cool to see a video from the go pro's perspective.
I’d barf watching that video, especially after the GoPro hits the ground and goes berserk bouncing all over the place in its rubber ball container... And I’m not one to ever chuck my cookies unless it’s viral gastroenteritis or severe food poisoning. @Fish Gum, if you ever do send your GoPro flying to its final resting place in a parking lot from across a football field, upfront disclosure of uncontrolled barf-inducing footage would be most appreciated! 🤢 Tight lines!
Tony. Have you checked for the casting trigger so far? That will change your fishing experience... Is a 10/12 dollars thing. I strongly recommend it! Fred.
@@FishGum Ha ha haaaaa!!!! LOL!!! Oh man...your index finger will be the happiest all over Tampa and surroundings!! Bravo!!! If you cast 4 oz and above is a must have... Don't forget to make the review!!!
To be honest I go ugly stick all day they are one if not the best rods ever made they are literally the Nokia of rods the Tacoma of rods and there performance is A 1
Distance on the first cast for the ugly stick was definitely a longer than the penn, it went the same practical distance overall but was traveling at an angle compared to the Penn which was straighter
There is a difference in action on those rods, so they need a different casting technique. Also the penn has better quality guides creating less resistance. If your in the market for "real" distance give us a shout so we can get you in the 200 yard territory.
@@FishGum we build both, our bass rods are the only one we keep in stock. Every other rod is built to order. Shoot us a message through fb/ig or our website. Jelsmaoutdoors.com

@@monkeyman4131 thanks for your help. I bought Big Water 11ft.. I will take you words about reel Cause I just have one daiwa legalis 4000 (gif) im new in this. Thanks for your quality time
u have the same exact ugly stick and the action on mine is fast and you can feel a bite instantly the Penn is stiff so I rather feel the bite vs 7 yards?
Nice! Do you find those older Penn reals handle braid ok? Any issues with wind knots? I have a 7500ss and a 5500ss but have heard they don't do well with braid.
I have and use " Penn Reels / Rods (matched ). From light 430SS , 2500SSVI - 8500SS reels . I'm wondering where /why you would need / want too cast 100 + yds. ? ? I can't see any reason for that my self. How do you " set the hook " or even know if you have a fish on the line at 100 + yds . out ? 4oz. weights all the time ? Oh well , you'ed LOVE a " ALVEY side cast reel " they clam you can cast 250 yds . ! If ya need to get that far out ......get a boat ! Tom Daytona Beach, FL. 22, September 2020 .
MM, great point. We use circle hooks so the fish set the hook themselves. Sometimes the fish are located over 100 yard off the beach. We can reach them.
Awesome video!! I received your sample in the mail today and super stoked for the wind to die down out here so I can give it a go! Thank you again so much Tony I will be in touch
Personally, I don't like the Big Water. However, I will say this. I've seen some dudes get some crazy performance out of them before. I believe it all comes down to technique and balancing the rig with the rod. So many factors, outside of the rod. Do whatever works for you! Lines tight! 👍
it would be very difficult to make this comparison, there are many factors involved, wind speed spool action on the reels, your cast action 1st to 2nd cast as you walked and tired, you wold need to cast at least 4 times 2 of each with no walking in identical conditions, no tree's or fences, and use the exact casting force
Tony l carp fish and I use Sonik sks 12 foot carbon fiber rods and Dawa cross cast x 5500 and I tell you I can get it out there. I would like to find a place where I could do what you are doing and see how far I could cast. Awesome video go fish gum.
Thanks Chris, a lot of people are sharing the rods that they use! I have not heard of this one. Thanks for sharing. Also Dawia reels are coming up a lot as well! May be time for me to upgrade.
I bombed a practice cast with 6oz of lead that I luckily thumbed HARD and narrowly missed a half million dollar motor home. 12' Battalion 2 w/ Penn Fathom 2 25NSD. Good video.
It's nice to cast over 100 yards in test. If in real world. It would be difficult because wind are strong. In Malaysia now are having monsoon season. So it would be difficult to cast over 100 yard. Nice test 👍
@@FishGum thank you for the reply, had a fierce 3 rod with the reel and broke the tip this weekend but it was only 7 foot so wasn’t really working for jetty fishing as I couldn’t cast out real far. So looking for a replacement rod that can have the casting distance. One more question I saw some guys catching massive bull reds using that 8000 reel but they have 100 pound braid on it and the reel is not rated for it but worked for him. So question is will it be a bad idea to use the 100 pound braid?
May I suggest doing five casts each then take the average of each Pole. I personally have an Alvey real on my ugly stick big water but I have never done a test but I do know it’s 150+
Nice video. However, I wonder if you translate the line going through 2 trees into actual distance, would the Ugly stik distance be more. I also wonder if you account for the distance you went to the left oppose to going straight forward like you did with the Penn, if the Ugly Stik would fare better. Now if you added the distance from the height of the two trees and added the distance you went to the left, I would wager that the Ugly Stik was the winner.
I know this is an older post... hopefully I’ll get a reply 🤞🏽. Which one has the most sensitive tip? I need to replace a rod, want a 12 footer, but need to be able to pick up on the 10” whiting bite.

Also take a few minutes after the long walk before you cast again. I think just about everything else I could add has already in the comments.
Thanks for the advice!
spot on
I agree.
If u would let 3 ft of line out instead of 1 you could get a extra 10 to 20 yards
I’ll try that next time I am fishing live!
My rule of thumb is usually line it up a little less than 3/4 of the length of the rod
Nice vid.
Great tips here my friend! Thanks I learned a ton!
MD Fishin I find that is not true! Form is a bigger difference than a slow oscillation spool.
Not knocking you but I thought high spools were better for distance. Like the penn spinfisher vi 7500 lc. Is that what you mean by high spool?
Taller shallow spools cast much better than deep short spools, look at any big pit or long cast surf reel ever
Man it was scary slinging that lead!
Well that’s a great point!
@@FishGum He thinks surfcasters lack cardio
Dear sir, may I suggest next time, moving the reel from the first rod to the second rod to counter act any spooling differences, also performing at lest 5 casts for each rod, before moving the reel, to gain an average distance. all the comments about different lines and reels are not so relevant when the rod action is the point of the test. all up a pretty good demo.
Great pointers!
Yea , more than " ONE CAST " would be fair . Not every cast will be the same fer sure.
Its like putting big mud tires on a truck that is not a 4x4.
the next step would probably be the aiming. If you are with a lot anglers along with you, most likely you'll mess up with their line.
I will work on my form thanks!
Thanks for all this information! Flying lead scares me to death! That’s why I didn’t make many casts....I’ll check out the casting vids.
Nothing beats the ugly stick it’s the best rod ever made
Yeah he was on the third cast.
Genuine classic !!!! I bought the 10' myself under 50 bones
ugly stick 4 shure....
they last
It also depends on what type of rig you use for fishing will also effect the distance and the bait being used..
Ugly stick is a quality durable rod. There is definitely better but for the money they cannot be beat.
Cliff, I’ll be looking into those! Thanks
I was goin to buy that reel today but I got Shimano xsb
One of my setups Shimano 6500 bait runner with an Ugly 15' love the combo.
Hello from Singapore 🇸🇬, good video. My furthest cast was 210m in an actual casting tournament.

We were casting more of the British style pendulum to hit those kind of distances.
Boom that’s amazing!
Boom that’s amazing!
That's some serious distance! I'm from Britain and the abu rockets etc... now in florida buying another casting rod for land based shark
@@pissywilly sounds about right the Brits are beasts at long distance I'm being taught by one in one year I cast over 175 yards
@@yiznahmartinez7933 they have to cast far because there are so few fish left lol
I’ll need to get up super early where that location will be virtually empty.
how do you think the big water would hold up for recommended weight + bait?
Takes it like a champ I personally have the 11 & 12ft big waters and sometimes i even cast by an oz or two over the recommended and it takes it like a champ
That is awesome!!!!! I was actually looking at both rods two weeks ago and was unsure which one to get. This helps !!!!
There’s very little difference just a few yards more with Penn
So you are going to get both?
Fred, I like both rods not only due to the construction and name. But the Ugly stick is a bang for the buck. I may purchase both due to my fishing addiction !!!! I hope that helps !!!!
well done!!
however l strongly recommend you to get a pair of casting triggers also. Your index finger will appreciate it!! and you will get those extra yards with ease and no suffering.
m.th-cam.com/video/1JPg9yatgpQ/w-d-xo.html
Great comparison Tony! Great point about casting away from everyone in case cot pops off. 4oz! That’s a lot of weight!
Thanks brother! I don’t want I get sued!
You should try the 12’ Fiblink Surf Rod. I use the 10’ version and it has wiping power. I now have their 13’ surf rod.
I’ll research it thanks!
never used either rods...but other than casting distance, other things to consider would be sensitivity and weight of the blank. i generally tend to hold the rod whilst fishing. so these two two other factors play a huge role for me. i get similar distance to what you got with my spinning Penn 10" carnage 2 surf rod (3oz lead) casting in surf conditions. if you lengthen the drop a bit more..you can load up the blank more. thanks for sharing.
HUGE TIP, Thanks so much!
@@FishGum subb'd to your channel a while back. love your videos :)
Regards.
Fred.
I agree on the ugly stiks they are to flimsy. I have a lot to learn about surf casting. I did not know about the trigger. I’ll look into Fred!
Yes on trigger! Abu Adiyat Super Strong Casting Trigger (red) www.amazon.com/dp/B07BF91K23/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_aPPiEbAPZV3E8
That is impressive for those rods! Imagine if you lengthened the drop, went to a 5oz. sinker and used a full-on pendulum cast. Probably well over 150 yards.
I need to learn more about this method!
True too your statement I believe the pendulum cast squeezes out all the force it can no other cast is as forceful
The Ocean master 12 foot surf spinning rod, matched with a Penn spinfisher vi 7500 long cast spooled with 20ib spiderwire x8 braid...you'll get the distance from it and the power, mostly because the line breaks about 5 to 8 IBS more than it says.
I’ll check it out
Thanks for the video.
Unfortunately I spooled them myself and didn’t calculate correctly.
Penn also makes a number of "Long-Cast" models in the Spinfisher and Conflict series.
Awesome bite detection
Keep your eyes open for old school glass rods like the 11-13’ honey lamiglas or fenwick. So much fun pomp fishing with the old glass rods paired up with 704/706 penn reels
Wow! I’ve never heard of those old glass rods! I NEED ONE, for my old 706!
Fish Gum 👍🏼... use the same reel
Those are great questions, personally I think you’d get about 3 years with heavy use out of each rod before something goes wrong.
So that’s why I got it on sale???? I almost bight a offshore angler power stick the action looked awesome.
Yes, unfortunately My line wasn’t spoiled to the edges! I miscalculated that! You’ve a lot by your comment thanks!
Awesome video. Using setups like this to get to structure catfishing from the bank
Thanks for the demo, i just bought the ugly stick at Walmart, so i know now how far i can reach the yardage. God bless
I went to get a ugly stick or a okuma longitude 12 feet and but a okuma 65 bait and run reel on it but not sure if I went to get the ugly or the longitude
Great technique, I have to practice casting so I can get it out that far.
Well thanks but I have to work on my technique too!
Unfortunately that day of fishing was a big skunk! It did not matter about distance! It was fun watching that lead sail though!
This is so cool. At least your lead flys pretty strait, mine, I give it a biiiiigggg ole slice to the right every time. Great video tony. Keep them coming . God bless and tight lines brother.
Thanks Carl!!!!
@big carp catcher yep. I’ve been working on it. It’s getting a little better.
@Maxim Gregory your right, nobody gives a damn, now take that $#!t somewhere else.
@Fidela Mattice and who cares?
I never heard of the Kenor, it’s sounds like an awesome rod.
elmasry alhorr
Do you mean Kencor? When I was a kid ( I was a big kid ) my father bought a 15' Kencor for himself and a 13" for me. He put a Penn 500 Jig Master on his pole and I got a Diawa Silver Series 7000c. My dad never could cast as good as I could. At my best I might be able to get close to 100yds. Anyway in 2013 I met a family with 6 Kencor Trout poles. They were surprised I knew of Kencor since they had been out of business for 10 years. Too bad, they made great poles.
What is the action like when fishing with it ?, does it have a fast or slow action ?, or is it a broom handle :)
The penn is a broom handle and the ugly stik had fast action.

Looks like penn won by 7 feet not 7 yards but idk. Cool video! 4oz that far is badass
Great video, in real life how much distance do you lose due to drag once you add bait ( for me its a whole squid on a single dopper loop rig)
I’m sure a little, I am redoing this vid with real life rigs added and bait!

God Bless
Not a bad idea! The glove was pretty easy to hack!
Lol I bet! Yes all you mentioned would affect the flight and distance you can cast.
Im getting 6oz leads 150 yards but in UK we have a better selection of longer stiffer faster actioned and more capable casting rods and reels
Im only an average caster at best. I fish with people who get over 200 yards on my setup.
And The tournament casters in the UK get 300 yards
That is crazy man! Wow!
I want to ask you, which one do you consider the best for handling lures? ...
I'd like to see you put a go pro camera inside a rubber ball for cushioning, and cast it out. Might be pretty cool to see a video from the go pro's perspective.
We may hear a fair scream from me or the GoPro is I mess up a cast and obliterate the camera! Good idea!

To be honest I go ugly stick all day they are one if not the best rods ever made they are literally the Nokia of rods the Tacoma of rods and there performance is A 1
It’s a great entry level rod for the price!

How do you know you applied same power/strength to both rods? Would be hard to tell.
check out the distance that guys are putting up on Maui ...shore casting clubs ....Hawaii in general has some great clubs
good job man !
I will check him out! Thanks so much
Cool man let me know how it does!
2nd cast sounds like my golf ball trajectory.....left of the trees on the left.
Lol
To get your line back..... cut sinker off, reel up line. Bada boom
That’s a great idea
Im still very impressed by the ugly stick because that tells me that all thier poles are legit and they are cheaper and stronger . Thank you
Can you do this again with a chunk of bait for viability in practical use?
Sure, I can work it in
Fish Gum YOU ARE THE MAN
Hey what reel ahve you got on the ugly? 9500ss??
6500ss
Personally, I don't like the Big Water. However, I will say this. I've seen some dudes get some crazy performance out of them before. I believe it all comes down to technique and balancing the rig with the rod. So many factors, outside of the rod. Do whatever works for you! Lines tight! 👍
that distance is minus the point off where you cast and the edge from behind...
Good point
it would be very difficult to make this comparison, there are many factors involved, wind speed spool action on the reels, your cast action 1st to 2nd cast as you walked and tired, you wold need to cast at least 4 times 2 of each with no walking in identical conditions, no tree's or fences, and use the exact casting force
I also have a ugly stick big water I love the thing that blessing keep the videos coming
It’s a good inexpensive rod
I use a taiwan made surf rod around 4.5 meters with 3 or 4 ounce lead. It could go farther since it's longer.
That was some cast cool 😎
Good vid.. " imagine a 4 ounce weight falling from atmosphere and hittong windshield" .. ponders.. "letz do it again" ..
Are they both 12’ rods? Thanks for the doing this demo btw!
Yes all 12
Forgot to ask what Penn reel were you using? Spinfisher?
I bombed a practice cast with 6oz of lead that I luckily thumbed HARD and narrowly missed a half million dollar motor home. 12' Battalion 2 w/ Penn Fathom 2 25NSD. Good video.
The penn is way more Worth it. Pull in a 20 pound dumbbell penn will show who is boss
Why you fishing for dumbbells?
It's nice to cast over 100 yards in test. If in real world. It would be difficult because wind are strong. In Malaysia now are having monsoon season. So it would be difficult to cast over 100 yard. Nice test 👍
True
GREAT DEMO I USE 12' H20 RODS AND I WILL USE 4 0Z WEIGHT AND SEE HOW FAR I CAN CAST WITH THEM GOOD FOOD FOR THOUGHT !
Thanks my friend!
Can the squadron 2 rod be paired with a penn fierce 3 8000 reel?
Sure can
@@FishGum thank you for the reply, had a fierce 3 rod with the reel and broke the tip this weekend but it was only 7 foot so wasn’t really working for jetty fishing as I couldn’t cast out real far.
Good recommendation
is it oke to use that rod for shore jigging ?
Need about a 7-9 ft rod for jigging
Oh and loving your channel. I FINALLY found some fish gum!!!! Cant wait to try it out this weekend!! God bless brother
The Ugly Stik is the most sensitive
@@FishGum 😳 wow thx for the reply... especially to such an old post. The wife was looking to get me a b-day gift (fishing rod) and I was debating between a 9’ or a 12’ rod. Perfect timing to split the tie, 12’ it is.
I hope everything is ok with you. I haven’t seen a post I awhile and fish gum is awesome!!!! I took a coworker fishing last week and the Secret Weapon pulled in my heaviest fish ever!! Massive black drum!! Keep your head up. God bless!
Would u ever add a heaver to your rod Arsenal like a conventional rell
I’d like to try a conventional rod and reel.
