I have the Pursuit IV 8000 for spoonbill. That reel definitely puts work in.

I will add my observation about the Penn Pursuit IV.
Last Wednesday my buddy and I went over to Tomales targeting leopard sharks from shore. He was using pursuit IV 4000 on an 8' medium heavy rod. He hooked in a large bat ray and he couldn't get it turned. It totally stripped the gears on his reel and completely trashed it. Brand new reel, first time on the water. Granted, a 4000 is a bit on the light side for big Mud Marlin but geez. I landed 4 good sized rays, largest was 54" across and a good 75lbs at least, using my Pursuit IV 5000 reel. So there ya go...

Interesting, so the 4000 didn’t hold up as well as the 5000 did then?

My friend was using 30lb braid with a 40lb mono shock/casting leader on an Ugly Stick medium heavy 9 footer. The rod held up fine but the reel didn't have enough drag to control the fish. It ended up stripping the gears in the reel body. Completely destroyed. But as you know those bat rays have no pound for pound equal as far as brute force. A 4000 is great for rock and jetty fishing, but the big rays are in another class. They will put your gear to the test.

@rickforrest6675 nice info. I bet it'd do good on the halibut out there! Going to any Bay in the bay area I would use a minimum 5000 reel.

Sounds like your buddy is a little inexperienced. I caught a big sting ray off the beach a couple years ago with a Penn wrath 4000 with 30 pound braid. The reel was perfect. You're supposed to use mostly the rod to pump the fish. Sounds like your buddy was using the reel to crank down on the fish without using the rod.

Hey Casey! Once again I’m the kid that picked up some stuff from scheels and I just wanted to say that dworshak trip went great! The new spinning reel held up to a 4.85 lb smallie. And later that day I got a 3.59 lber on a topwater spook! With many 1 and 2lbers in between, Those were my 2 biggest fish. On Saturday, our group (3 people) caught 35+ fish with some big ones in between. With all my big fish I finished with a 17 pound bag! Great gear, great trip!

to compare penn persuit to daiwa bg is a joke🤣

I have a Penn wrath spinning reel which is cheaper than the pursuit. I've been using it for 3 years already in the surf and not one problem. Also, the Daiwa BG is nothing to write home about. The BG is a decent reel, but some guys have had problems with their BG. I read about some problems on stripers online. Some anglers reported random parts breaking, and then Daiwa sometimes doesn't have those parts in stock. Daiwas customer service is not good as well. Back in 2012, I bought a new Daiwa exceler spinning reel for $130. Within 4 months, 3 small parts broke on it. I called Daiwa to order those parts and they didn't have any of them in stock. Penn, Shimano, and Abu Garcia are the easiest reels to get parts for and really good customer service.
