I am not sure how well this works with instances, but check the 'hair dynamics' box in the particle system, and add a wind/forcield option and crank the strength up

it works in 4.0 though, you can use gscatter there and then open with 4.2, hope it helps

Got to Particle Properties -> Render -> Show emitter (it will be enabled by default you can uncheck that)
