    Neil,I throughly enjoy the videos you post! I'm a 20 plus year AutoCad guy and this December I made the decision to learn Inventor. At work we are using a textbook as our primary resource, at home I'm watching your videos as my secondary resource, you make the content interesting, informative and funny as Hell! Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world!

    That's sweet! This will be very useful. I can't see why Autodesk wouldn't improve on this in the future because for people who don't have or use Vault this is a gold mine. Thanks very much, - Jacob S.

    Every time I upgrade Inventor I dig out the Design Assistant and stick the icon on the desktop. It's a primitive but very useful tool. I find that most users have never heard of it. My main use for it is copying entire machines where the parts are driven by 2D sketches in other ipt files. This allows me to copy the driving parts and have them linked to the new machine parts. Editing the 2D sketches then modifies all the linked parts and drawings. Instant (almost) new machine! Copy Design in Vault can do this but the plain structure in Design Assistant is easier to read and spot the changes required. The other thing I find it good at is where Copy Design has made the copy but some of the linked parts have been missed. Design Assistant makes it possible to correct the links.

    Hello mister TFI Cadtips Godlike Inventor superstar Neil!
    This is probably an amateur question, but still, you would be an absolute champ/bro/baller (to use your words ;)) if you could answer it. My scenario;
    I have part A with the corresponding drawing A. The part has alot of detail to it so annotating the drawing for it takes quite a lot of time. Somebody wants a new version with 1 detail changed on the model, whilst keeping the old files unchanged. For the part file I can do the change and save-as. But how is the best practice way to also update the drawing without having to remake it from scratch?
    What I do now is copy both ipt and dwg to a new location, give them new names. Then I temporarily change the name of the ipt I copied from to break the link to the new dwg. I then try to open the copied drawing and give it the new ipt as its reference. Change the name back of the ipt I copied from and woila. I can now do the changes on the ipt and the dwg updates. But there probably is a better way... Can you help me?
    (I do not use Vault)

    I've wondered for several releases now why Autodesk has neglected updating Design Assistant. It is a powerful tool, but that interface can make it seem like you're chasing your own tail sometimes.

    Hi Neil,I have been trying to learn some of the features of Design Assistant by creating some dummy parts and assemblies.I have been able to COPY parts and assemblies without a problem. I can't seem to RENAME an existing part if I only have that part open in D.A.. If I have an assembly open in D.A. and that part is used in it, I can RENAME it there. Shouldn't I be able to RENAME the part when that is the only thing open?

    Its a Nice feature, but how do i copy an complete assembly with parts and everything, and from all the files an idw, to an new assembly?
    The problem is, that when I pick the top idw from the assembly, the other idw files from the used parts not automaticully Will be select!
    And with a next step, when I make a revision of an assembly, iT Will not select all the files that are also changed and give them automaticully an revision!
    Can you or someone explain how to do that?

    There are couple of stupid things in this tool: For starters - you can't rename a part that is not a part of an assembly. WHY?! They had to literally code an exception for this. Secondly: If you want to copy just parts, without copying the whole structure from top assembly, it's going to create new parts with new names (or at least new locations) AND replace parts for their copies, which is completely useless and counterintuitive. Just like Neil said - it's got potential but it's also kinda abandoned in a poor state.

    Autodesk has been stopped developing Design Assistant for years! They want you to use vault instead! Very sad!
