I’m 18 and I’m proud to have a 2000 marquis LS as my first and only car. 235hp V8 cruises like a boat on calm water. Huger interior with the leather bench seats fits all my friends comfortably. Weeks upon weeks of being out every night with them. Damn good room for me and my girlfriend after everyone else has been dropped off. Had the best summer of my life with that car I love it to death. I always wanted an old P71 interceptor throughout high school and this turned out to be all that and more and I wasn’t even expecting it. My mom bought it for $700 from my brother in law for a graduation/birthday gift and I’m beyond grateful. I plan on keeping this thing forever just to restore it when I’m older to have a future classic of my own from my day. Beautiful car with the best memories I ever made.

The P71's were used but not that often , Gas mileage was the biggest factor , the bucket seats weren't as comfortable either . It seamed that the merc's were more plush and comfortable than the Ford's even if the Ford's were not P71's . I had a 07 P71 as a personal car and now a 96 and 08 Grand Marquis . The most luxurious Crown Victoria was the rare 1992 Crown Victoria Touring Sedan which in 1992 had a base price of S23,999. It had leather and cloth seating surfaces, auto climate control, dual power seats with power recliners, performance handling package with the 4.6 liter dual exhaust, automatic level control and cast aluminum wheels, anti lock brakes with traction assist, am/fm Stereo with cassette deck. Major options included a premium audio system, Insta clear windhield, 12 disc CD changer mounted in the trunk and full leather seating surfaces. Fully optioned it would cost about $28,700. A factory power sunroof was unavailable on Crown Vicks until the 2003 model year.

That Mercury needs control arm bushings. They are both prone to that though. Actually all Ford vehicles are. Unfortunately, that's the trade off having that smooth and soft Ford ride quality.
I've had a 2000 Crown Vic P71 Interceptor and I currently have a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis. You're not wrong! Hands down, the P71 is the better performance machine. I miss mine. But hands down, the Mercury Grand Marquis is one of the smoothest, nicest riding cruisers I've ever driven. At the end of the day, I'd much rather have a suped up Mercury. I loved having a police car. I loved every bit of it except getting stuck behind somebody who thinks you're a police officer, and I hated how basic the interior was. But, if you're willing to drop a few grand into serious performance mods, the Mercury is the way to go!

I just inherited my mother's 2008 Grand Marquis LS. First thing I did was tint the windows, next will be a double din stereo monitor so I can hook up a rear camera, then I might upgrade the wheels . I'm about function over style so I'm still considering then I'll probably give the muffler a growl and at anoint I would love to boost performance. Since I'm in California and I'm good for 2 years on smog, any suggestions what I should do to it? I've heard a p70 air intake if I can find one is a good place to start. The a k&n filter, and there was a fuel line piece i seen that are always bad on these engines and just replacing that alone would add 10 to 15 miles to the tank. Any thoughts? How do those window trim inserts look? They're $109 i think i saw and they just fit over the windows, like accents, I forget the name

Thanks so much for all this info.
But I still am unclear about a couple things. One thing is that you say it is easier to get parts for the Crown Vic's because the junk yards have so many of these cars - but is it not true that virtually any part at all for either model is interchangeable with the other model?
And, I would like to ask your opinion about the fact that the P71 has no doubt been driven hard and fast and idled for many hours with no concern by the drivers for abuse they put it to; and you say generally the Grande Marquises have been driven carefully by grandma's and grandpa's but other mechanics claim that the start and stop driving , short trips to the store and to bingo and church age the car much faster than highway miles, since the car does not have time to warm up properly and the engine wears out faster in the first few miles.
What I am looking for is the car that will last the longest with the least trouble - so do you conclude the Crown Vic is the best coice?
    Thank for your advice.

I like the p71 ruggedness but I also like the grand marquis luxury. I think I'm going to get the mercury and then upgrade it with p71 parts, get that aluminum driveshaft, stiffer springs, throw a tune on it, thicker sway bars, change the rear end gearing, and It should be about on par with a p71.

Iv had my 04 Merc Grand Marquis LS almost 2 years. Silver on grey leather and 54k on it and was bought off my great uncle who bought it new an had it at the dealership every 6 months and always been garaged to this day. Had 25k on it when i got it. My brother an i have owned a few going back to an 89 interceptor.. The question is do you want to drive a big comfortable and good looking car. Leather alloy wheels that's been babied an all that or a beat down fleet car someone pushed 200k miles of farts into the cheap seats lol.. If you want to go fast buy a Mustang.

I brought a 03' Merc because rhe old couple took care of it. I can spend more money on mods that will improve the looks and performance. True the Crown Vic P71 can outperform the Grand Marquis but buying one means fixing the wear and tear first.
    Winner: Mercury Grand Marquis!

I think you forgot to mention the multitude of Grand Marquis that have the M75 package. They came with a better tune than the P71 Vic, true dual exhaust, bigger torque converter, 327 locking 8.8 rear, power steering cooler, and bigger rear sway bar. They also have adaptive air spring rear suspension and higher top speed than the Vic. These cars are everywhere and clown a P71. I have one I bought from Florida for 500 bucks with 101k miles on it and it's a 97. All people need to do is look for m75 in the VIN. The true taxi cab varient is neither a P71 or a M75 but a p98 I believe. They came with heavier springs, etc. The best bang for the buck is a Marquis M75. If the air suspension goes bad and eventually they will, replacement air springs are cheap or as an option, conversion kits to convert to conventional coil springs with gas charged shocks are about 150 bucks complete on Amazon. Stock vs stock... I'd put my money on an M75 Marquis Everytime. I'd be surprised if a Presidential Marquis didn't have M75 equipment as Presidential anything is usually intended to be comfy AND bad ass but the point is know how to decode the VIN when shopping. Peace.

your comparing apples and oranges, your comparing a Grand Marguis to a Police car of course they are going to be different, the grand marquis has approx. 224 HP where as the crown Victoria police pkg. has a higher output engine 235 hp. try comparing a regular CV to a regular grand marquis.
