I can see why people don’t like ACOGs, but for hard times when you might need to improvise with a rifle, they work great. Dependable and light-weight, too. I’ve owned several ACOGs for years and I keep one on my work rifle. For a general-purpose rifle, I prefer them to LPVO’s.
Im one of the folks that migrated away from the acog through the years in favor of newer or more versatile setups. That said however I’ll always have an acog in my fleet. Just such a robust, easy to use optic that pairs perfectly with a 14.5” rifle. Might lack a little bit up close but slap an rmr on top or a 45 degree red dot and you’ve got a much more versatile setup. Personally I find those options a bit awkward though I prefer just the straight up acog on my 14.5” upper.
What people don't understand... It's indestructible. A bunch of idiots like Marine Grunts can't break it, but still have an optic that gives them a ballistic advantage. (I'm an idiot). PLUS -- it just works.
Great video…I was accurately engaging enemy out to 500 with an m4 in Afghanistan. I was using government issued match grade instead of green tip, so 75g I believe. I always liked the versatility of the acog, I was great for making observations and as far as close quarters, it’s definitely possible to engage enemy at close distances when keeping both eyes open. As a matter of fact, I always shot the acog with both eyes open.
Man appreciate you stopping back to provide the real world experience! It’s amazing how much better a rack grade rifle can shoot with some match grade ammo.
@@Starcraft98marinewatch ballistics gel videos of 75-77gr match bullets. They’re pretty devastating on whatever it is they hit. Garand thumb did a video comparing 300 blk to 77gr 223, 77 was almost creating bigger wound channels than 120+gr bullets
Thank you for showing us what the ACOG is capable of. Super light weight with clear glass and accurate BDC. My experience while in the Marine Corps fighting in Iraq as a DM with an SDMR, I noticed my limitation for making precise shots was about 500m with the ACOG. That's based on my skill (or lack there of) and the environment (shooting from awkward positions while being shot at in 130 degree heat and a heart rate through the roof). Most of the time anything beyond 500m was accurate covering fire or a lucky hit. IMHO I think the ACOG is designed for an infantry squad, though it can be used for other scenarios (survival/bug out gun?). It is a reliable, fast, super lightweight optic and a force multiplier no matter how you look at it.
I was expecting reliable accuracy out to 500 all day. Really surprised of the performance out at 700. Cant beat the block II for a do all style rifle and of course the nostalgia. I have one almost identical and love it. Great video man
Man I was equally as shocked with how well I was able to connect at 600 and 700 meters. The 4x magnification was a little on the light side for that kind of distance but for a full size torso type target it was still very usable. Thanks for watching!
I was a unit range coach for a bit when I was in the Corps and these things were still pretty new...had to tell people, "just TRUST THE THING!!" I loved it. I thought it was great. If you just trust the thing, it's fantastic...it REALLY DOES work. Been actually thinking about moving my EOTech off my Military Collector's Edition M4 to my Honey Badger and replacing it with an ACOG...it'd be cool to keep the M4 correct AND it'd make the M4 a great mid-long range rifle...
Great vid! I'm one of the Marksmanship Master trainers for Natl Guard. As we've made the shift from Greentip 855 to the M855A1(EPR) round, we find that we have had to adapt our training methods to work our zeroes better, since the EPR is a much flatter shooting, hotter round. In Natl Guard units, not everyone gets the TA31, and what we, in my state, have is the "F" set up for the long guns, mounted on issued 14.5s. We find we can go to the 25m A8 target and use the tip of chevron center mass. POI will be 8moa low @ 25. Go out to 100m and tip of chevron is POA/POI. Use tip at 200m with a slight low hold (belly button) due to holdover. Now at 300m, tip of the stadia holds true centermass. EPR drops different than the old greentip so we find a high hold with the "4" line at shoulder works, with a 500m hold higher still. While our shooting teams use the Elcans, the average-to-better level Joe does pretty well with the ACOG. Naturally we have those who shouldn't even have irons! Job Security!
Very interesting, appreciate you providing some real world insight! I guess I didn’t realize M855A1 had that much of a trajectory difference. Combine the different trajectory with the 20” bdc on the 14.5” rifle folks would for sure need a bit of training to become effective in pushing the setup to distance. Now you’ve got me wanting to do a real world m855 vs m855a1 compare but that stuff is way expensive on the civilian market. Are noticing any kind of accuracy difference with A1 vs old school M855?
Love my TA31 with a Holosun 507c on top. I gave the ACOG a battery illumination just like the TA02 (instead of taping chemlights to it).It is called the REM ACOG (Reticle Enhancement Module). It has 11 brightness settings so it works in all light conditions. It covers half of the fiber optic so it reduces the Reticle Bloom in bright sunlight. It is made of the same 30% glass filled Polymer as AR pistol grips. Oh... It eliminates the need to replace a dead or dim tritium because you just turn the power to #1 and you have the soft glow for night time aiming. Great upgrade to the TA31! Illumination at your finger tips.
I just bought a TA31f for my 14.5" setup too. I know I needed the RCO M4 model, but nobody had one in stock locally, and I didnt wanna risk shipping. Thanks for this video man, super informal. And I'm pretty relieved to know it will still work with a little bit of compensation on the BDC.
Nice shooting. I agree the ACOG glass is really stunning and overperforms for the 4x power. I have the LED model and use an offset T2 on my 14.5. Really love the combination. Thanks.
This sounds like the ideal setup for a fighting rifle you plan to shoot at close to intermediate distances! Adding some type of 1x red dot type optic really improves the capabilities of the package. While my experience with a red dot on top of the acog is really limited, to me it feels awkward..... I feel like the 45 degree mount is a much more natural solution. I've actually been thinking of throwing my primary arms micro red dot on this upper at 45 degrees and calling this rifle good to go!
The HOLOSUN micro RD with the Green 32 MOA Circle Dot is excellent for a 45 degree . Hold top of the 32 moa for 25 yards , center of the 32 moa at 50 yards . Absolutely amazing.
You know after shooting this video I’m tempted to pick up another acog…. Would be cool to have one with a bdc calibration for my 14.5” barrel. I’m very thankful to have access to such an unreal place to shoot. It’s a long range paradise! Thanks for watching!
Knowing that Trijicon calibrates the sub-tensions on the Acog for a 20" barrel is good information. I always thought it'd correspond to the ballistics of a 14.5"/16" (and I still believe it ought to), so thanks for feeding us that detail
They do have some reticles calibrated for different barrel lengths and different bullets. Just have to look into the specifics of each individual acog. At least now we know barrel length doesn’t make a huge difference In ability to connect with full size ipscs at distance. Thanks for watching!
Really appreciate the continued support! Just out here trying to make entertaining yet informative videos. Stay tuned as I’ve got a lot in the works for 2023!
I'm in love with my ACOG, I got the same one, the TA-31F-G on my LWRC DI and can pretty easily make hits at 4-500 yards with it. Hitting 300y is a breeze.
I’ve been binging your videos. Made for shooters by a shooter awesome! Your knowledge shows through the dialogue and these vids just flow great. Subscribed!
Man my goal is to create entertaining yet valuable content. Really appreciate you taking the time to watch and support the channel. Lots more content like this in the works for 2023 so I hope you'll stay tuned!
Dude I love this channel so much! I say it everytime but you quickly joined my top3 fav TH-camrs when I saw a vid of yours for my first time a month ago. You’re a surgeon with an ACOG bro! I have a block 2 build I’m currently working on and if I was as good as you I’d so just get an ACOG. I’m not that good tho and my eyes are crap so when I get my bonus in March I will be getting a sandman S, and a Vcog. If my bonus is big enough I’ll get a CGS Helios QD ti over the sandman, but that’s a LOT more money, but the flow through seems worth it. Great work brother
Man it’s awesome to hear you’re enjoying the content. I’m having a blast making it and I’ve got a ton planned for this year…. Just wish I could spend more time filming and less time working haha. Tell you what, I fully support your decision to go with the vcog. Sure it’s possible to push the acog to distance as shown in this video but the acog has been surpassed by modern optics in many ways. I’ll always have an acog in the fleet but mainly because I think they are cool, not so much because I think they provide great capabilities.
Great shooting. I really think the ACOG is the ideal optic for this caliber and barrel length in a combat rifle. If you think about it, the targets become difficult to see and hit at 800+ but at that distance, the caliber becomes the weak link, not the optic. You simply aren't transferring that much energy into the target at 800. However, it's always nice to know you can connect at distance if absolutely necessary. I've got a block 1 with the ACOG. Wouldn't have it any other way.
Great point here! Yes the 4x magnification made it difficult to shoot past 600m but as you mention that’s likely the realistic limit of where a 14.5” 556 AR could be considered remotely “effective”. For distances inside of that, the acog is beautiful. Quickly range, hold, shoot and spot without any thinking. Huge fan of the acog on a 14.5” setup. Thanks for watching!
Outstanding Video my friend. You really do a nice job. Love mid to long range shooting. I haven't ever had the opportunity to see or shoot with an ACOG but have seen a few videos like the one I sent you with Dimitri and the guys out in the Arizona desert. My 1st optic for my 5.56 NATO AR -w- 16" TK 1/9 SS barrel was a Primary Arms SLx 3x-32mm with ACSS CQB M2 prism reticle and it is consistent out to 500 yds. Gets really hard to see beyond that. I replaced it with Primary Arms SLx 3-18x50mm 0.1 Mil with the ACSS HUD-DMR (FFP) reticle, BDC is designed for 5.56-308 and I absolutely love this optic. So far out to 800yds is my longest. Couple weeks ago got me a PSA 16" Mid-length 5.56 NATO 1/7 Nitride barrel and I went with the Primary Arms SLx 5x-36mm ACSS Aurora reticle which is Mil-based with old over out to 800. This reticle is almost identical to the HUD-DMR, It has horizontal and vertical ranging capability where the HUD has horizontal/vertical and 10" circle ranging capabilities out to 1000 yard hold overs which on the HUD reticle is outstanding. The Aurora is dead on zeroed at 60yds using the BDC reticle hold overs 100 - 800 yards. I am running IMI 5.56 NATO 62gr ammo which I have found to be very consistent. Excuse me for being so long-winded but I LOVE this stuff man. I really your videos!!! 👍👍👍👍
Oh man no problem with the long winded comment! I love interacting with folks that are just as passionate as I am! You’re one of the reasons I’ve really been thinking about trying a primary arms optic lately. They’ve got a lot of cool options so I’m not sure which route I’ll go yet but the number of folks that have similar experiences with their products to yours have me excited to give them a try. Stay tuned as I’m sure some primary arms gear will show up on the channel at some point!
"Great shooting", love your content! Never had the opportunity to shoot with the ACOG yet (bucket list item) I am currently run on Eotech Exps 3-4 and 5x magnifier (love it!!). I've only done 100 yards so far and it's a tac driver 100 and below (1/4- 1" moa) depending on the shooter having breakfast or not LOL. Looking forward to getting out to longer range someday but lacking in motivation, free time (family) and a good range that has the distance available. REALLY jealous of your venue!! Reminds me of my youth, we could just run out to the country\woods and have some serenity to focus and also relax (and waste a lot of brass). Very relaxing, without a lot of people around. Anyway, keep the videos coming please, we need more of your kind of content. Thanks
In my GWOT days of 07-09 OIF I preferred the EOTech over the ACOG for NV and eye relief. I often found myself wanting a magnifier though, but that just wasn’t on the MTOE. I now have both on my personal rifles, with a magnifier for the EOTech and it’s hard to say which is better for GPR. Acog with rmr(the fiber/tritium one) for reliability(no batteries), magnification and bang on BDC is great for my 16”. The EOTech for limitless eye relief and sight picture, NV, and nostalgia. Can’t go wrong with either, except maybe budget concerns and certain niche cases that aren’t really a concern for GPR/Minute Man/Civilian use. My .02 and YMMV.
Very cool to hear how the different optics worked for you in various real world applications. I’m a huge Acog fan for something like this 14.5” 556 rifle given I mostly shoot it within 600 yds. Tell you what though, after running an eotech with magnifier setup recently for my “combat optic review” video I decided to buy that setup for use on my 11.5” ar. Such a versatile setup and if I ever get into the NV game it should be able to fit that application well.
@@MountainsMulletsMerica to me it’s really come down to “am I going to run this with NV or not?” If not, ACOG&rmr or even MPVO with stacked/offset dot is about all you’ll need. The latter being my new test that I’m really enjoying. If NV is a yes, then EOTech with magnifier, or some other variation of NV compatible RD with magnifier. Call me an EOT ch fanboy, but I can say that I beat the ever-loving-crap out of my issued EOTech and it still held zero and never gave me any issues. When I say beat, it got slammed in an up-armored HMMV door, like really hard. I had to paint the housing twice during my deployment because of the abuse. If you’re running a short rifle and want NV you’ll be hard pressed to beat it. At range though, it’s kinda lacking because no BDC. But that begs the question, why are you reaching out with your shorty/NV rifle?
@@BandAid350z this thought process is exactly why I decided to purchase an eotech. It’s going on an 11.5” AR that I likely wouldn’t shoot beyond 200ish yds and it adds NV capabilities that I don’t have in my fleet yet. I got the exps3-4 with the bdc so I’m curious to see how well it matches up for longer range shooting. For sure a video will be coming as I’m sure I’m not the only one with that question.
@@MountainsMulletsMerica looking forward to that video. I know acogs are bang on with the subtentions, no pun intended. And my -2 EOTech is good once I figured out where the second dot drops.. ~475/500m out of my p&w 14.5”. I’m curious where your rounds land on that 11.5. Stay safe and keep your powder dry.
This was an awesome vid. I've not had a chance to get behind an acog and I appreciate the info. For a 4X I am very surprised at the performance out to distance. It looked to me that the eye relief is pretty tight. Obviously pros and cons for everything. Thanks for the fantastic content!
Eye relief is super tight on the 4x acogs, that’s probably their most common complaint. 4x was definitely light for those shots past 500m but as shown in the video it’s still capable of making hits. The biggest drawback with the low magnification is not being able to see your own hits and self spot. If I were in an environment where I couldn’t see missed easily it would be very hard to make corrections with only 4x mag shooting .223. That said anything is possible with enough training! Appreciate you taking the time to watch!
That 500m group was stacked! Awesome shooting. I recently built an m16a4 clone with a carry handle, been contemplating throwing an ACOG on there. Shooting irons long range has been a blast, 600 is kind of my limit at the moment. It’s hard to see my 66% beyond that
Man I have no clue how I laid down such an epic 500m group…. Probably couldn’t replicate it again if I tried haha. I’d argue shooting irons out to 600 is a more impressive feat. That’s a skill not many folks work to maintain anymore. If you’re doing that with irons you’ll be shocked what you can do with an acog haha. Thanks for watching!
Wow crushed it. Really enjoying the way you present your information. Looking forward to your channel blowing up soon. I'd like to see you compare that acog to one of the primary arms micro 3x prisms. Less $$ but 20 years of tech advancement.
Thank you for the encouragement! I'm having a blast putting content together and so far it seems like folks are really enjoying my videos. Lots of new content coming so hope you'll stay tuned to check it out and don't forget to tell your buddies about the channel! I've had a ton of comments around trying one of the primary arms prisms.... 100% this is on my radar but I'll have to buy one to use first haha
Thank you! Seems like these kinds of videos have been really well received so I’m planning to continue making them. Thinking I might do something with my elcan or try to get my hands on some primary arms prism optics for future content. Stay tuned!
I’ve never seen an ACOG “in play” at those distances. This bolsters my confidence in my ACOG. Well done. It is a great battle optic. Ive wondered why trijicon doesn’t make that same size optic in a fixed 6x. Esp when you can run an rmr on top. Seems like 2x more mag would make it markedly more refined. Hey.. great shooting. Subscribed.
Tell you what…. If you’ve got the opportunity to push an acog to distance you ought to give it a try. Super fun and it’s rather effective once you get the hang of it. Trijicon does offer a 6X version of the acog but it’s awkwardly big. In the event they were able to offer 6x in an optic the size of a 4x I’d buy that instantly haha. Thanks for the support!
I've been running ACOGs since 2007 when I picked up TA01NSN. I absolutely love the Mini ACOGs like TA45 . For the TA01NSN I pretty much was GTG out to 400Y with 0 issues . The glass is so clear on the ACOGs it makes it seem like it has more Magnification. ACOG with Offset or Top Mounted Red Dot IMO is still one of the best setups . Tried and true design that lasted 20+ years of Combat . I've been dual illuminated fan for 15 years . Having to not worry about Batts for primary optic is a win win situation. Triji ACOG , Accupoint LPVO and VCOG are absolutely phenomenal optics . The VCOG is such a rugged LPVO . Its IMO the most durable LPVO that's for sure .
Great points here! Pretty awesome how nice the glass is in the acog, clear glass makes shooting long range so much easier. I haven’t had a chance to try a vcog yet but hopefully that’s something I’ll be able to get my hands on this year. If I do, stay tuned for content!
Oh man, I bet there are tons of American's out there that feel the same kind of nostalgia. Seems like a 4x acog would be a perfect match for the Afgan terrain. Thanks for watching! The bipod is the accutac WB-5.
By the time 3/5 got to Afghanistan in 2010, the insurgents had already learned not to engage US Marines. Gunfights were futile endeavors against us, generally, but especially squaring off against Marines with A4s and RCOs at a quarter mile or more. The RCO is like a cheat code. The FA and FO enough by the time we got there, that they just refused to be decisively engaged. The ACOG is a game changer.
Oh man I’m a huge fan of the socom weight barrel! I’ve been thinking I should run some 77gr MK262 through it on video to provide a look at what she’s really capable up. Toss something like a 1-8 lpvo on this upper and it would make a great dmr type setup.
@@MountainsMulletsMerica My socom barrel shot great with mk262 with 55 grn ball ammo, i never saw groups as good as what you just showed at 500* edit i see you you where using 62 grn not 55
@@colbydugger yes, ran 62gr ammo in this video. I did run 55gr ammo through the same upper in my ar battle zero video. Seems like this barrel shot Wolf gold 55gr ammo into 2.5-3 moa every time. Not great but for sure combat accurate and good enough for plinking (especially for the price). Crazy how different barrels can be so temperamental haha
The LED ACOGS are the best IMO. Turn off illumination for a finer aiming point and turn it on for use up close or lower light. They get VERY bright. Good shooting!
Interesting….. I haven’t had a chance to look through an LED acog yet. Really didn’t think they would offer any noticeable advantage while shooting. Guess I thought their main advantage was just the ability to illuminate in all light conditions. Might have to give one a try now!
@@MountainsMulletsMericaI have ACOG TA02 LED model and worth every penny as I can control the illumination easily plus I can easily add a top mounted red dot. You have an excellent channel with great info plus nice 👍 shooting. I subscribed to your channel.
I’m always enjoy your format and process. I have been undershooting my rifle (very similar to yours). I’ll be shooting soon. My front yard range is 718 yards so should be capable. Thanks.
@@MountainsMulletsMerica yea it is. And if I walk up my driveway, I’m at 900. As I shoot I am looking at the Crazy Mountains (about 90 miles) Behind me (about 5 miles) are the Snowy Mountains. My property and all of the ranchers around me is loaded with gophers (ground squirrels). Talk about reactive targets. And hey, I am feeding the Bald and Golden Eagles along with hawks, coyotes and more. I am a conservationist. :)
I'm sooooo close to buying one but I need to watch your combat optic video first and then I'll edit this comment. Thanks for making this video by the way! Effectiveness is worthwhile, wish I could get one right now. Again, thank you for the content.
Oh man, now you’re making me nervous haha. You’re going to have to let me know what you think after watching my combat optic review video! The acog is a great optic but I think it’s really important to understand it’s pros and cons to make sure you’re going to be happy with how it matches up to your expectations. For me, the acog is a perfect for a 14.5” 556 AR intended to shoot out to 600ish meters.
Outstanding video as always. TH-cam didn't give me a notification for this video so I'm a little upset. Love the content man, you're an excellent marksman/rifleman. Keep it up.
Once again appreciate you taking the time to watch and support the channel! I’ve been crazy busy with work lately so it’s been a while since I dropped fresh content but that said, I was able to get a new video out this morning actually. If you didn’t get a notification for it, hope you’ll check it out. Going through the process of taking a new rifle out of the box and making hits at distance… let me know what you think!
@MountainsMulletsMerica it's funny because I searched you out noticing I haven't seen anything from you and discovered this. Then I got a notification after returning back to TH-cam about your .308 video. Which I'm watching now.
She’s a great shooter! My opinion 600m is kind of the max this setup so really impressed with the performance all the way through the realistic useful range. Thanks for watching!
Love the channel man! Been shooting for years and have never done this until I started watching your vids. IMPACT. When I hit steel now at long distances I just automatically say impact. Thanks dude! Lol
That’s actually hilarious! I just do that on video so viewers can tell what’s going on but now that you mention it, it does feel good to say each time haha
Man it's a shame you didn't have the TA31 RCO-m4, I've taken that one out to 500m but sadly that is as far as I can shoot due to range limitations. I do not have access to a giant wheat field. Glad you read my comment on the fighting rifle video ;-) Excellent shooting as always, love my block 2m4 as well. Mine is the flat top version.
You know I also wish I had the rco-m4. Given how close this 20” bdc matched the performance of my 14.5” barrel, I’m thinking the 14.5” bdc version would be a perfect match to my rifle. All good though, after shooting this video I feel really confident in this setup out to 700ish meters on a full size torso. Throw some wind in the mix and things would become more challenging but not impossible.
I think they're a great optic when the proper barrel and ammo are used to match the reticle. Honestly, slap an RMR on it and you've eliminated the need to use the whole Binden aiming concept. The only problem is that if you mount it on top, then your height over bore is atrocious and your up close holds are going to be more extreme. Thats why I still gravitate toward an EO-Tech and magnifier for a GP rifle. It lets you make long shots especially if you either have a 3-4 or know your reticle and holds and it also simplifies your up close shooting with a 7 yard hold. I feel like theres less to account for in a variety of situations. While not perfect and still a compromise, I think its the better compromise.
100% agreed, an acog needs a red dot setup to provide a fully capable optic setup for a fighting rifle. I just have a hard time getting past how awkward a top mounted rmr is, maybe I could get used to a 45 degree red dot but like you say a red dot with a magnifier is just all around a much more versatile package. Can’t wait to get the exps 3-4 and magnifier out this way so I can push it to distance!
I used the 4x in the service and obviously eye relief is always the big complaint. I'm eager to try the ta11 3.5 which I hear solves that issue at the cost of a little heavier/bulkier setup. I'd like to see Trijicon or another manufacturer try and create something with a further optimized geometry while still maintaining ACOG-level glass quality. Maybe continued popularity of this sort of optic will motivate someone in the industry to bring a new gold standard to market.
You know for years I’ve told myself I should try one of the 3.5x acogs but given how rarely I shoot acog equipped rifles it’s hard for me to invest. Pretty surprising to me though that trijicon hasn’t tried to improve the 4x through the years. Maybe their sales have remained consistent and they’d rather invest in other areas given current market trends.
weapon outfitters has this mount called the KRAM, looks a little goofy at first but it scoots the ACOG back and raises it. Best of all its only $40 and it makes the shooting experience much better.
Acog is impressive. But living in an urban/suburbian environment of New York. We rarely have shooting distances beyond 200 yards. We can get away with simple red dots and pistol caliber carbines, due to the short ranges. Matter of fact would love to see how far you can shoot a PCC or a 9mm pistol on your channel…thanks for the content
Great point, in a suburban environment where shots are rarely past 200ish yds, the acog might be a bit much. Something like a 1x with magnifier might be a better fit. You know pushing a PCC or 9mm to distance is something I’ve never thought of…. Might be something super fun to try on future content and I bet a lot of folks would enjoy seeing what a setup like that is capable of. Stay tuned!
@@MountainsMulletsMerica I have a magnifier but found it took away from the carbines nimbleness and wasn’t really needed in the distances I was shooting …look forward to your future videos!
@@donh1572 very interesting. I bought an eotech with G45 magnifier to play with. I’ve been thinking I’d keep the magnifier separate from the rifle and only slap it on when needed. The goal would be to keep the rifle light and handy for close up work and then longer range capability when needed. Who knows, maybe I’ll end up not valuing the magnifier as well. If that’s the case I’ll sell it and recoup some cash haha
You might want to check out the Brass Facts video on the need for magnification in urban shooting scenarios. Lots of food for thought in this presentation.
Crystal clear glass at 4x is great out to 400m, pushing it to 800m makes wind and elevation corrections difficult to self- spot. Great shooting. 700m with 5.56 is about the edge of reliable point engagement. After that, it is suppressive fire. Still worrying, but not like your .300 Win Mag.
Oh man, couldn’t agree with you more. Sure I was able to make hits at 600-800m in this video but that was in optimal conditions. If I were shooting in an environment that didn’t make it easy to spot my impacts, it would be impossible to make corrections at distance using a 4x optic on top of a 223 rifle. For me I’d say 600m ish is about the max where I’d call myself “effective” with a setup like this. Thanks for watching!
That would be a great addition to my Noveske Afghan 14.5. Top it off w a red dot for close targets ie RMR. Another great video! This is exactly how I would do my channel. 🇺🇸
Thank you! Really appreciate the continued support. Sure there are maybe newer or better options on the market but it’s hard to beat how robust and effective the acog is on an ar carbine.
That was a great video. Nice shooting. I would like to see an ACOG 6x48 on your customer build LMT 308. Be interested in seeing how a higher mag ACOG performs at that 700-800 yard lines. Thx. J
I’d love to say that was all skill but in reality it was mainly luck haha. This actually threw me for a loop when counting impacts on the target. I was only finding 6…. It wasn’t until I watched the video that I realized 2 hit the exact same spot.
Appreciate you taking the time to watch! You know I’ve been toying with the idea of picking up one of the new led AGCOs in 3.5x. Seems like a nice update vs my old school 4x.
Another good video. I have a Acog TA31RCOM4 calibrated for 14.5" barrel. I have not shot it past 300M, but will give it a try this summer and see if my results with the BDC line up with yours.
Man I’d be very interested to see this. Given how close my 14.5” rifle performed vs the 20” calibrated bdc I’m betting yours will be basically dead on. Appreciate you taking the time to watch!
Good info on the ACOG. Always interesting to see equipment performance using everyday ammo that is standard ball. Heavy match grade ammo has gone out of the affordable price range for the average guy. My local store wants $60 a box for Federal GMM 77 gr
$60 per box of FGMM 77gr is laughable. Online I’ve been seeing mk262 clone loads dropping well below $1 per round, to the point I’m contemplating pulling the trigger on a little stock pile. That said though I’ve been trying to create AR content with ammo that seems to match what most folks are shooting. Sure 77gr performs awesome but how many folks are out plinking with that stuff…. I know I’m not haha
Oh man with an 18” barrel your results will be better! A little more velocity would’ve let my point of impact match my bdc a little better and would’ve increased my hit % out at 800m. Thanks for watching!
That was very cool! That group at 500m was amazing. I have the TA31F with the red chevron but my groups at distance suck compared to yours. Green must be more accurate then! 😂😂 Seriously though, your skills behind a rifle are top notch my man!! Great video as always.
I actually have no clue how I laid down such a nice group at 500M, I was shocked when I saw it up close. Maybe a little skill in my shooting but mostly luck haha. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Living the dream. I have a similar clone and love it. Daniel Defense FSP UPPER on a Aero lower with Geissele SSA-E trigger. Optic is vortex razor 1-6HD with trijicon RMR offset. Now I want an acog to test. Haha. Keep crushing it man. Thanks for the content. Maybe a mini bio video soon? Who are you? Just some cool dude on a mountain with a mullet?
Just some cool dude on a mountain with a mullet sounds mysterious haha. I’ve been thinking I should drop an intro video but in reality I’m pretty boring. Just someone who likes to shoot a lot and try different gear lol. Sounds like your rifle setup is basically identical to mine, hard to beat the ris ii fsp rail!
I still love the ACOGs, I was getting great consistency at 500m with the cheapest ACOG (can't remember the model, but it was single illumination and handle mount)
I’m wondering if you were running the old school TA01 with the crosshair reticle? Pretty sure those used only tritium for reticle illumination. Pretty slick how you can just drop an acog on an AR and have an instant and significant hit percentage improvement at distance. Great optic!
Super awesome video…seriously. I would be very interested in the same test with a 16” barrel and 75 or 77 grain bullets. Also, do you ever tape off the fiber tube for more precise aiming points?
Really appreciate your support! Just out here trying to create entertaining yet valuable content. If you like the style stick around as I’ve got a ton of content ideas just like this in the works!
You know now that you mention it this might make a solid video. Showing how to “customize” your bdc for your particular rifle setup. Let me think about the best way to show this on video. Stay tuned!
This is quality content. I’m about to throw my 4-16x42 ATACR on my non-FSP Block II M4A1. Would love to shoot at a KD/UKD range like your setup… what a feeling.
What a handy little dmr type setup. Run some 77gr ammo through it and you’ll be pretty consistent out to 800yds on torso type targets in my experience. Super cool setup for a block II.
@@MountainsMulletsMerica Haven't chosen a mount yet. But there's a fresh half-case of 77gr OTM on the bench. Interestingly enough, my SOCOM barrel absolutely hates m855, from whatever lot I got. Have a bunch to burn through and I'm not looking forward to it.
@@12cc90 man a bad day on the range “burning through” m855 is still better than a day at work though haha. Bet your rig is going to love the 77gr otm though. After seeing how my barrel ran the 62gr Hornady black I’m thinking I should try some 77gr as I bet it would lay down some really impressive groups. It’s amazing how 77gr ammo seems to make any 556 ar shine!
Another great video. I was surprised to see the ACOG and the 14.5 inch barrel AR do that well. Would have liked to see you shoot some MK262 A1 rounds through it. Good job.
You know I might revisit this in a future video and show how it performs with some 77gr mk262 type ammo. I’ve received several comments on this and I believe it would’ve helped my pick up several more hits out at 800m. Stay tuned!
@@MountainsMulletsMerica My Radian 14.5 with an 85yd zero and MK262 ammo along with treating the meter stadia in my acog and Elcan as yards matches perfectly with the BDC for drop. Using the reticles for ranging is still gonna give you a meter range estimate but an easy quick mental adjustment to convert to yards.
@@Kilo__Bravo great info here! I’ve received a ton of comments about more acog content as well as more 77gr 556 at distance content. Might be a fun one to revisit and show how the small adjustments you mention allow the acog to perform very at distance with 77gr ammo.
Man this is the first I've heard of the TA31D..... now I want one! Comparing the BDC measurements on this to the measurements in my F-G and the results I saw down range, I'm pretty sure the TA-31D would be a perfect match for my 14.5" upper shooting this hornady black. Now you're going to have me spending money I wasn't planning on haha
Got 2 currently. One on 14.5 with M4 reticle... one on 20" with A4 reticle. Love them both. Shot the same style in the army. Shot the army A4 out to 700. My rifles ive only got out to 300... but I know I can reach much farther with both
I really wish I had a 4x acog with the 14.5” bdc. Part of me wants to buy a second acog with a 14.5” bdc but if I do then I know I’d have to get a 20” a4 upper to use my current 20” calibrated ta31F-G on top of. Fun but starting to feel pricey haha
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the TA31F calls out a drop of 35.8 MOA at 800 meters. My ballistic calculator says that a 62gr projectile with a ballistic coefficient of .304 needs to be traveling at 2856fps with a 100 meter zero, to drop 35.8 MOA at that distance, which lines up pretty well with the 14.5 barrel. If I remember correctly, M855 out of a 20" barrel is going closer to 3000fps which would make the TA31F not ideal for a 20" barrel. The ACOG that is specifically made for the M16 with a 20" barrel (The TA31RCO-A4CP) has a drop of 31.9 MOA at 800 meters. That is a difference of 3.9 MOA from the TA31F (which is a difference of about 3 feet at 800 meters). Like I said, please correct me if I'm mistaken, but it seems the TA31F is not for a 20" barrel.
Been watching so many of your videos. I would love to see you test the auto ranging scopes like the new Burris 3 or 4 just to see how they stack up against those BDC scopes that you use normally. And with a standard 308 round. Awesome stuff 👏 👌 👍
You know these auto ranging scopes have never crossed my mind. Now that you mention it, it would be fun to see how they actually perform at distance. I’ll do a little digging on line to see if I can find one to try out. I have no clue what to expect there. Thanks for the idea!
@@MountainsMulletsMerica I think you would be the best to get it done! Am looking for the best long range set-up for my FN-FAL 308. My favorite stock gun.
Primary Arms TA-31-Aurora was the pinnacle of usability. Primary Arms still makes a 5X prism with this reticle. Wind holds come in handy at extended range. Tell Primary Arms to remake them.
I wish I could get my hands on one of the acogs with the primary arms reticle. Give they are out of production I might have to snag one of the PA prisms just to give the reticle a try.
@@MountainsMulletsMerica I saw one on eBay last Friday, green. It sold at $1900. 😟 I couldn't justify it. I run a red TA-02, 4x but battery powered. It's nice to auto-adjust the brightness.
We had issued 2-3 Acogs per squad in the Marines in 2005. I went to an Acog school hosted by USMC snipers so we can incorporate a designated marksman per squad. We shot out to 840m. It was difficult cause of strong winds but hits are possible.
@@MountainsMulletsMerica Exactly! 20" M16A4s at that time. If I remember, I hit a man-size target 3/10 shots with strong wind conditions. We never utilized designated marksmen per squad after those classes in overall platoon or squad operations other than Hasty Checkpoints or Entry Control Points. lol

MG range in Hohenfels Germany made hits on E-type silhouettes at 800m from a prone supported on sand bags. That range had two targets side-by-side at 800-600m so it wasn't as hard of a shot as it sounds. (M4A1 with ACOG M855 ball/ no wind that day cold as balls)
Cold as balls…. Man that’s how I felt filming this video haha. Do you remember which model acog you were running? Did the bdc match up pretty well for you out to 800M?
@@MountainsMulletsMerica Yeah it matched up with the bullet drop almost exactly (when the US gov buys in bulk they get a custom reticle lol). It was 3.5x model ACOG the 173rd was fielding in 2014 don't remember the model name though. The reticle had windage lines for engaging moving targets, but the center post and BDC lines looked the same as yours.
@@bradleydysinger6906 good deal, I’m wanting to revisit this concept with an acog using a bdc that matches my barrel. Would be epic to have the bdc match up perfectly!

That light is called the magnetospeed T1000 hit indicator light. Just drop that in google and you’ll find it sold on many online retailers. Sometimes hard to find in stock so you might have to shop around a bit to find one.
Very underrated channel
Underrated indeed. I’m loving his work.
ACOG love! Great video
Man it’s hard to beat that acog “cool factor”. Thanks for watching!
I feel the same way. Lpvo is better at close up shooting but I like fixed magnification for 100yds+
@@MountainsMulletsMerica same here. The piggy back option is perfect on paper but so clunky in usage
What people don't understand... It's indestructible. A bunch of idiots like Marine Grunts can't break it, but still have an optic that gives them a ballistic advantage. (I'm an idiot). PLUS -- it just works.
@@CiviTacPut an RMR at a 45 off the rail. Just a quick transition
I’ve heard good things about the 70+ grain stuff.
How was effect on target?
@@Starcraft98marinewatch ballistics gel videos of 75-77gr match bullets. They’re pretty devastating on whatever it is they hit. Garand thumb did a video comparing 300 blk to 77gr 223, 77 was almost creating bigger wound channels than 120+gr bullets
Hey bro. I got your weapons here in Pakistan, i have an M4 carbine and M16a4 with an RCOM150 acog and have an aimpoint pro.
I have zeroed an acog with 62 Grains M885 ammo
One of the best gun channels on yt
Thank you! Really appreciate the support!
Great video man, I really enjoy the level of quality you put into your videos!
Thank you! Appreciate you taking the time to watch!
Excellent. I have four different ACOG models. They are all superb. Also, I’m just a tiny bit jealous of your private range.
The usmc acog is optimized for 14.5 I got one for a pin weld

I'm in love with my ACOG, I got the same one, the TA-31F-G on my LWRC DI and can pretty easily make hits at 4-500 yards with it. Hitting 300y is a breeze.

The ACOG and the A2 front sight make me happy
Hard to beat a little throwback action haha

Phenomenal shooting!
Acog holds a place in my heart from my time in Afghanistan.
Btw, what bipod is that?
That socom barrel shoots really well as do you, another great video man.
Cool ass video man. You answered all my questions. Just got a DD lower and am about to order a BCM 14.5 upper to go the acog!

Once again appreciate you taking the time to watch and support the channel! @MountainsMulletsMerica it's funny because I searched you out noticing I haven't seen anything from you and discovered this. Then I got a notification after returning back to TH-cam about your .308 video. Which I'm watching now.
The ACOG TA31 worked well for me in Northern Afg. When I moved south I swapped to a EoTech
You and that rifle were staking some great groups clear out to 600 m. Very good video.
Glad you read my comment on the fighting rifle video ;-)
Excellent shooting as always, love my block 2m4 as well.
La Rue, out of Texas makes QD mounts for ACOG that greatly improves positioning.
@@MountainsMulletsMerica I would love to see a video on how far you shoot a 9mm PCC too!
You might want to check out the Brass Facts video on the need for magnification in urban shooting scenarios. Lots of food for thought in this presentation.

Great video, very well done on all fronts!
Gotta love it when that little led strobes on impact
Yeah man, that’s the part that gets addicting haha
That would be a great addition to my Noveske Afghan 14.5. Top it off w a red dot for close targets ie RMR. Another great video! This is exactly how I would do my channel. 🇺🇸
Thank you! Really appreciate the continued support. Sure there are maybe newer or better options on the market but it’s hard to beat how robust and effective the acog is on an ar carbine.
That was a great video. Nice shooting. I would like to see an ACOG 6x48 on your customer build LMT 308. Be interested in seeing how a higher mag ACOG performs at that 700-800 yard lines. Thx. J
Did anyone else notice at 12:39 the shot stack on top of another?? The bottom hit of the group. Great shooting as always! Great content.
I’d love to say that was all skill but in reality it was mainly luck haha. This actually threw me for a loop when counting impacts on the target. I was only finding 6…. It wasn’t until I watched the video that I realized 2 hit the exact same spot.

Ammo and rifle getting along very well.
Yep, very impressed with how the Hornady black performed out of this upper. Just wish it was a little cheaper haha
