I don't understand the hate Elena gets. She portrays Eva really well, and I think her voice fits the often manic and determined voice of Eva. Not only can Elena act, but she can DANCE her heart out. And her singing isn't bad by any means. She has the rare flat note and occasionally she drags, but it always recovers and never sounds out of place. To me, she is a perfect Evita.
She's incredible. It's just that the majority have a very narrow view that "Eva" should be a big blousey, Broadway belter and nothing more.
She can't sing the score - be honest about that.

@@unclenelvis I would not express an opinion without being informed. Should I watch 3 seconds and give my opinion? I'm sure you'd complain about that too. Nevertheless, I did skip some parts as the awfulness was quite consistent.

Ricky Martin was fabulous as Che, probably the best I've seen. Fantastic singing and dancing! Bravo!!

Interesting "blooper" with the falling earring.. Elena covered it quite well and continued with out missing a beat... That is a sign of a good Broadway actress.. That being said.. I'd give my eye teeth to see Madonna do a full stage production of Evita.. even if it was just her and the cast from the movie singing and not "acting" with a full orchestra behind them..
Madonna is now too old for the role.
Also, she is unable to sing the score in the original keys; which is why the score was lowered by a third for her to sing it in the film.
Based on years of experience in theatre, I don't miss to much and I didn't see the earring business. She is that good!
In her 2004 tour Madonna sung Lament from Evita. I actually laughed at the comments where people praised the words and they had no idea the song was from Evita.

@@gasmmusic that explains a lot. I always wondered about the high keys in "a new argentina" because I mainly know the movie score and there the keys in this song are not high at all.

I think Elena Roger could have worked harder to embody the Broadway sound, as she did in the 2006 London Recording. Her approach here does not show her at the best of her abilities.
London recording is third behind the original 76 album and the Lupone Patinkin Broadway recording

Patti LuPone came off like Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh in the original!
The revival is clearly meant to be such a different interpretation. It is different and is meant to be. Based on that, how the two be compared for quality?

The musical has always been a great production... but i'm sorry, the direction is just awful in this production! Nothing can beat Harold Prince's original direction!!!

I think Antonio Banderas, though not an incredible singer, gave a rough and more passionate voice to a character that needed it. Though singers like Ricky Martin or trained Broadway singers have very polished, refined voices, Che as a character is still poor, and part of the revolutionary crowd. Therefore, by casting a singer with a heavy accent and scruffy tone, it gives Che the feeling of a poor Argentine and adds to the experience. Perhaps that's why you prefer him (Which I agree on, I love his version).
Neither do i. I'm just a fan of Antonio's, but Ricky does an excellent job.
My favorite is Mandy Patinkin or Raul Esparza.

Evita is my favorite Broadway soundtrack - I grew up listening to it but only had the opportunity to see it on stage for the first (and so far only) time with this revival show. I’m so sorry to say that I did not enjoy Elena Roger’s performance at all - and during intermission, my friends and everyone around me were panning her and saying how awful they thought she was. Maybe as some are saying she’s closer to the “real” Eva than the Broadway version - but we are all there and paid to see the Broadway version.

OK I had to stop watching after Rainbow High, the most boring and badly sung version of that sang I ever heard. The Mistress should have played Eva because at least she could sing. Did Elena R know that at this point in the show Eva was only 26 because she's playing her as if she was 65!
Madonna in almost her 40's portrayed Eva's better... And did, its way better, a funnier version of Rainbow High.
The trouble with bootlegs is you only get shows where the people are tired. Roger's voice really sounds like it tired. But you try to sing the role eight times a week and see how you sound without a break.
I actually saw her on Broadway and agree that she was horrible. Many in the audience did. It reminded me of when they briefly revived LES MISERABLES in 2006 and cast Daphne Rubin-Vega as Fantine. Many complaints during intermission about her, too.
gasmmusic She didn't sing it 8 times a week, though. Eva never does.
Plus, as much as I agree that Eva is a hella difficult part, Elena clearly didn't fit the bill from the very beginning - her performance is very static and she seems to play the best, most noble version possible and it simply doesn't work (and won't work, as the musical Eva requires a lot of energy and dry wit to be captivating; and she never will be likeable).
Btw, vocally she sounds way better when she's singing the part in her native Spanish.
Between Elena and Solea, I'm so glad to see that it looks like the days of white women playing Eva are over
