I am so surprised... Elena is so amazing. People Always comment on her voice during tv shows and I can understand that but after seeing this... She is a pro!! Loved it!
I love this cast.. Elena will always be MY fav. Evita. The accent makes it 100x more believable. Loved this revival.. can't believe she didn't even get nominated for a tony.
She's singing in English...badly (both the singing and the accent). How does the accent make it more believable? We're supposed to pretend it's all in Spanish and her native language but instead she can barely say the words. It's the opposite of believable.
Josefina Scaglione is also from Argentina and she made a very lovely and intelligible Maria in the 2009 "West Side Story" revival. In fact, she received a Tony nomination for Leading Actress in a Musical; Elena Roger did not.
It's not just that she's Argentinian, but more that, by being so, she understands the impact Eva's life had (and still have) in Argentina. Was she the vain and hypocrite wife of a fascist? Was she a saint capable of actually wholeheartedly loving an entire country? The people love - and hate - her still, and Elena portrays her with the ambiguity that's so necessary for Eva the woman (as well as Evita the myth). Absolutely adore her performance of the Lament and the final Broadcast, her best, truly.
I will always be affected by Eva almost dying during Dice Are Rolling, but as an actor, I can't help but laugh that she has to move her arm to get lifted into his arms and then drops it really quick. Ah, the joys of live theater. Also, ELENA. That's all.
Thanks for posting this. I have been waiting for a touring production of this show to hit Toronto and I am still waiting. I love seeing the different actresses portray this complex woman. Some love Lupone, others Paige, others Rogers... I think each one brings their own stamp to the role however I do find this a bit more authentic... maybe it's her accent, her being an Argentine... who knows. I still crown Patti Lupone as my favorite Evita but there are moments where Elena nailed the character.
I agree. All of them have their strengths and weakness in playing the role. Lupone for me is the most powerful voice. Elena is the more realistic acting of them all. And don´t forget all the dancing she´s doing while singing. None of the others had this coreography to dance.
YES, I SAW PATTI DO IT, I WAS SO HAPPY WHEN SHE WENT ON TOUR WITH THE COMPANY.. SUPERB. SO MANY HAVE DONE THE SONGS BUT STILL, LOVE PATTI IN THE ROLE, LOVE ELENA ANYWHERE.
As usual Elena is incredible. Unique and complex. The people who gripe about her voice must have a very narrow view that the role must be sung by a "Broadway belter" type voice. Not so
a good production and well acted.. however.. I still say that Madonna brought something almost magical to the role of Evita... No one will ever top her performance in my eyes.. From her acting to her singing to her embodiment of the Late Argentine First Lady... It was a role that Madonna was born to play..
INDEED, ONOE OF BEST THINGS MADONNA EVER DID, BUT I SAW PATTI IN IT ON TOUR AND SHE WAS SUPERB. I LOVE ELENA WHEN SINGING, SHE IS SUCH A TINY THING, LIKE PIAF MORE THAN EVA BUT STILL SHE WAS IDEAL FOR THE ROLE. I KNOW LLOYD IS BRIT, LANG IS ENGL, BUT EVA IS PURE ARGENTINA. THIS VIDEO IS NOT AVAILABLE, WHERE DID YOU GET IT??? A NEW ADMIRER OF ELENA... I AM ALMOST 86 BUT IN LOVE AGAIN.
I love her sympathetic approach, which her soprano enhances. It amplifies her emotional moments and helps her feel like a real person rather than a caricature.
I GUESS NOT COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE? HAD FORGOT CHE WAS ALSO AN ARGENTINE. AD THOUGHT SIMPLY ALLEGORICAL. BUT TWO VOICES FOR REBELS IN THE WORLD. WHERE ARE YOU WHEN US HAS WEE DONALD?
I dont think it's a bad performance, although her voice could be a little softer as this is Eva's only moment of calm reflection. But the staging isn't very good. The chorus of embalmers makes no sense unless they are positioned around a freshly dead Eva, laid out on the bed. In the original staging, four men in suits, lit so that their faces were in shadow, emerged from the shadows to stand, ominously, at the corners of the bed. As you say, far creepier. At least this version is less alarming than one I saw on TH-cam recently, which ended with men in white lab coats looming over dead Eva with oversized hypodermic syringes that looked more suitable for spraying greenfly.
I absolutely LOVE Elena Roger as Eva. No questions asked. I'll never get tired of this play. :)
I am so surprised... Elena is so amazing. People Always comment on her voice during tv shows and I can understand that but after seeing this... She is a pro!! Loved it!
I saw miss Roger in London! WOW she was incredible ❤❤ no recording captures how sensational Miss Roger was in the role ❤❤❤
I always cry. I didn't cry during The Fault in Our Stars, but I cry during Evita. Enter the feels.

dohaperson1 she's actually from Argentina and English isn't her first language.....
Who cares?
Josefina Scaglione is also from Argentina and she made a very lovely and intelligible Maria in the 2009 "West Side Story" revival. In fact, she received a Tony nomination for Leading Actress in a Musical; Elena Roger did not.
dohaperson1 it’s not like she can help having an accent
When she faints in Dice are Rolling... oh my god my heart
IK it’s so sad

My first (and so far, only) Broadway show was this production, and it was fantastic.
Beautiful! The Lament is so hauntingly beautiful
Absolutely spectacular.
thanks again for posting! It gives me goosebumps seeing/hearing Elena playing Evita, I feel she IS Eva Peron.
I just *love* the way Elena points to the audience in the Stalls as she sings '...or a stall' in such a dismissive sort of way.
Gracias por compartir!

she even looks somewhat like Eva Peron.
Look closer.

Thanks so much for posting!! I'm playing Eva in March and this has been incomparably helpful for me, I LOVE Elena!
The deathbed/dying scene I lost it. Lament always gets me too.
Many many thanks for posting these. It means so much
Thank you for posting this here. It's good that these performances can be enjoyed again and again. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Simply amazing.
Fantastic! Thanks so much for posting
SIMPLEMENTE IMPORTANTE!!!
Elena Roger the best!!!
I love the background vocal harmonies in Lament but I'm so disappointed they're not on the cast album. Wtf?
Bonnie Christilaw they're on the 2006 one
I hope she reprise her role if Evita comes to Malaysia for a performance!

why must i crying by 3:50 ?

It's nice that you can explain your likes and dislikes so clearly! You give your opinion and allow other people to have theirs!

Yeah, Madonna brought the magic of being unable to sing any of the high notes.
She sounds like eva peron...

Randall Ackley this makes no sense
WTF is MDNA?
This Lament is horrible. The original is one that is filled with much more sorrow, and ends creepier than this. Disappointed
Absolutely wrong
