Slowdive was my ultimate obsession in my early 20s in the early 2010s. I happened to be living in the UK (very close to Reading) back then and was wishing SO BADLY for a reunion. I did get to see a Godspeed You! Black Emperor reunion show though.
I especially liked Slowdive, and shoe gaze in general, for how it allowed the listener to just marinate on the feeling and backseat any polarizing sentiments. You just took it in and made it your own. That’s what MBV was for me too. I think our youngest gens appreciate that simplicity that’s often not afforded to them.
I think he’s referring to back in their time, they were normal kids playing music, not boozed up hard partying rock star personas which was common place I guess
really interesting point that back in the day some artists got signed and got screwed by their labels, but now, everyone can put out music but everyones getting screwed by streaming services instead
