    In the early 90's the world wasn't ready for Slowdive yet. But it's ready now. The new album is fantastic.

    Saw them two nights ago they were as good if not better than when I saw them in '94. As for Neil's thoughts about Just For A Day - the mix was what made that record so special. The surges, the echoes, being awash in sound....if you're a fan of the genre, Just For A Day is a landmark.

      Just For A Day taken start to finish is a beast of an experience. Not much else approaches that album, in my eyes.

      Definitely agree with this viewpoint. The production in that record is really what sets it apart from other records in the genre. They didn't just throw reverb on every single track like so many bands do. There's something to that lush sound that makes the record what it is.

    • @Palace-of-Madness
      @Palace-of-Madness 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. Thankfully it turned out the way us fans wanted and not how Neil and Simon wanted aka removing tracks and addings stuff from the ep's that we already had. Bad enough we don't have so many of them amazing demos in album quality. We don't need any more of that!

    As a huge Slowdive fan I have to disagree with Neil and Simon. Just For A Day = AMAZING. It was a brilliant decision to not include any of them songs off of the ep's. Why include songs that we already have? Not to mention there isn't ONE song I would have wanted left off of JFAD. It is a masterpiece. My only regrets is so many of those demos should have been on some of the albums. I Saw The Sun comes to mind. So awful that never got the proper production. And that is just one of them... So may of those demos should have been released properly.

    Blue Day is excellent -- my favorite work from the early period. The new album is fresh and dynamic, recognizably Slowdive but not a rehash of older forms. Courtyard studio is a nice link between Blue Day and the new record.

      @Palace-of-Madness 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Blue Day is just a collection of the early ep's, but I get what you mean. It's nice to have them all on one full album.

    I am really into slowdive since I discovered them, but I missed them when they did the Wiltern gig recently. I think there latest album is a classic, since Souvlaki. I never cared for the shoe gaze reference, I wouldn't label them that way, it's really alternative ambient rock if anything.

    Peter Halstead sounds like Peter Rabbit! And has all his hair, it's obvious in this interview (it looked very salonesque in a live reunion vid. Peter, need to know more about the hair.)
    Those delicate musings done, a little story:
    I once did a guided meditation series to find a soul partner. (Lost one of the eight meditations, but otherwise completed them faithfully.) The next week, my new roommate (I had written a guru named Sai Baba about my ideal home. It was beyond wordless to me when I then held the lease of a private beach home in storybook Laguna Beach for the next four years.) Anyway, the roommate apparently was a movie extra, and was going to be in this "Cameron Crowe" film as a "groupie mom". I gave her a serious query as to the dignity of playing this.
    Then realized, hours later -- as I 'accidentally' read the back of a Led Zepp album at a friend's/band house the next surf town over -- that the name at the end of the writing, read, "Cameron Crowe"- that. same. name.
    "What a sign from the universe," I thought, "I forgot she can give me a ride back to San Diego where I needed to finish being a massage therapist." So yay, i juuust went with her..aall the waay to the agency, and was cast as a ..groupie. "She's perfect," the booker said, as I looked to see who she was talking about.
    About a couple weeks before this, I had come across heartbreakingly important beautiful music echoing in the very high cielings of our empty, candle-flickering yoga community space in a gutted, downtown san diego building interior mostly open that fit a quarter city block. the warmth flickering in the otherwise utter silence and on the glossy wooden rebuffed floors (restored one section at a time).
    The player of the music was on the phone, door open, in the drywalled bedrooms built on the periphery. And the only other one in the building.
    I walked the floors, new song after new song after.. When he was off the phone, i asked him who the band was. He pointed to the 4AD poster in prominence, "The Red House Painters."
    So on the set of the film, i retreated to the lights-off, almost pitch black, empty, ginormous indoor stadium while they filmed in another place, the backstage.
    I sat like 30 levels up mediating in the quiet dark. I heard sounds, then i saw the tiniest figure make its way up, five rows, landing, five rows, rows, rows, rows. And sat down in that dark next to me.
    It was Mark Kozelek. The singer of that mystery band that I had glided in socks over flickering warm hardwood floors listening for at night.
    We dated at my home, his temp home in Marina Del Rey, and that apt in SF with the picture window of the bay and rolling fog.
    And you know what i listened to -- soaring and keeping safe my spirit -- on a single earbud as I worked as an art model for the next five years at my new Laguna Beach day job? (and only source of wages, another job hookup by my roommate) -- this band that noone knew called
    Slowdive
    Told everyone they were in my top 5 favorite bands, along w Mark and Radiohead. Prolly had Innocence Mission in there, it was too early for the Lonely Island. I then may or may not have visited Oxford for four days when choosing between Oxford, this unknown place whose music spoke to me as if importantly -- and, Hawaii.
    I have went to a very ethereal, fun life in Hawaii after that -- music, ocean and infinite green privacy nature, wilderness, my own land, fuhreedom.
    Just checked Slowdive stuff and Mark stuff, and I'm kinda like, what?? They played together? And like, specially, often exlusively? My heart,, when i hear alison, feels urgent and loved.
    Maybe i can explain it like how one feels in the denoument of a film when a character goes to tge love of their life.
    Well, its likely not the same for me (im pretty happy where i am), but I would not be able to turn down an affectionate hug of any sort from any member of Slowy D.
    And I would looove to hear the original songs with less production.

    Neil is right about JFaD. Their weakest album, especially after their three EPs, which were just ridiculously awesome. Blue Day is infinitely stronger, and still the single best collection of tracks that Slowdive have ever released, to this day.
