Leontyne Price has the uncanny ability to mold any piece of music she sings to her musical personality, very much like Alfred Cortot. Understanding this about her, it's fascinating to observe what she does and doesn't sing. I'm simply floored at how Price and Levine work together to give us a Liebestod that is way more Leontyne than it is Wagner, and how well it works. She never pushes against the orchestration, and he keeps things brisk and lean for her. The ultimate climax is completely tailor-made for her, and totally satisfying as a result. I come back to this concert often. It is a miracle.

She had one of the greatest voices in the WORLD. She still holds the title of greatest spinto in my opinion.
    Tremendous talent and ability.
The encore from Rondine was INCREDIBLE!

This is one of my favorite of her concerts. She absolutely could do it all. Her voice was endless and her art unbelievable, a true vocal miracle. Thank you, Leontyne, for a lifetime of sheer vocal glory and artistic perfection.

She is absolutely incredible. Almost 40 years ago, I was fascinated by her incredible voice. No one has a voice like her. The crystalline angelic essence of music. The first opera love is the love forever. Never-ending admiration for her. She will be the best forever.

@@liedersanger1 I will repeat my story. Almost 40 years ago (I was about 15 years old) I had no idea about the opera, I considered it a crazy howl. I heard Leontyne sing the aria "Tacea la Notte Placida" on a Russian LP record. Her voice began to rise, spilling around me, hitting my soul. Only she can sing like that. "My God! Who is she? She is fantastic!" - Leontyne Price. She got me forever. She directly caused my opera admiration. The recordings were not available, we had communists here. The next record was "Christmas with Leontyne Price". I listened to this in the middle of the summer amazed by her voice like a fool. I found much later that she is black. I have never taken any care about the color of her skin. She is an absolute Goddess to me.

@@liedersanger1 She is the greatest to me. No other soprano works on me to such an extent as she. I can only close my eyes and fly on her beautiful voice to another dimension. I can't describe or name it.

I had to listen to this concert again. The Trovatore was truly incredible. All the trills were lovely and the endless BREATH control! This was 1985? She was almost 60? Incredible.
The Wagner and Strauss were EXCELLENT. I'll have to listen to this AGAIN! 😃

Happy 94th Anniversary of Life Madame Leontyne Price! She is from Laurel Mississippi. My mother RWG and she went to school together. Edith Arrington. Mommy introduced her music to us at an early age. My favorites are Madame Butterfly, Tosca, and Carmen!

Everything except the Ernani aria is fantastic! What really impresses me is how poised her singing of "Vissi D'Arte" is after the huge Salome final scene. What a Goddess!

Incredible is merely a word. This must have been an incredible performance in person. This audio certainly confirms it. Even though the Salome may seem "rough around the edges" Ms Price was in control of what she wanted to do. The Trovatore excerpt is stunning in every way. Oh for a video of this concert!

Love the Isolde . Hate the Salome. She sings it well enough, but ot isnt right for her and takes up a big chunk of
program space that could have 4 great arias. 2 from Aida, I Butterfly 1 dealers choice. Then it would have been THE best concert ever.
