      Enrique how long have you been sculpting in zbrush, and how often do you sculpt? I was wandering how long it took you to get to this level, im a beginner, and very intimidated of sculpting and zbrush.

    • @Dusk1990
      @Dusk1990 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I started back in March of this year. I was super intimidated at first too and but I think its definitely a program worth learning. I try to sculpt everyday as my goal but sometimes cant, so maybe 4 - 5 times a week on average. I also bought the Introduction to ZBrush tutorial from FlippedNormals which helped a lot. it teaches you everything you need to know to get started :)

      Awesome Enrique! :D So happy to hear you liked it. Was there anything particular you found to be useful?
      Keep up the sculpting, and you'll kick all sorts of ass in no time :D

      Don't get me wrong, but I would feel the tension in your place. Imagine how to go to this last year’s video and see your sculpture. And then think, "How did I progress for this year?" This is also such a motivation)

    I got an intuos for $20 on Amazon. It was on sale and used.. but it was all I could afford. It's a Huion and I heard they're good for starters, however I notice a lot of issues with the sensitivity. Sometimes in substance painter, the paint permanently activates, so I wind up painting all over the model.
    Othertimes in ZBrush, it'll draw a straight like instantly across the tool for no reason at all. Nothing an undo can't fix but it gets irritating.
    So in essence, I got what I paid for. lol

    Great and practical video as usual guys. You mentioned asymmetry at the end of the video and I was wondering if you could do a shorter one about how to break symmetry, without breaking the form. Because moving areas randomly in 3D is very rarely a good way to achieve a convincing result. But you two have years of experience so it would be really helpful if you share your insight into this topic. It doesn't need to be just about faces or human body in general.

    • @FlippedNormals

  • @BathroomTile
    @BathroomTile 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You mentioned towards the end how breaking symmetry improves the characters, but not to do it in a production. Does it have anything to do with the topology for animation?
    What would be the answer then? Should we do the manual topology before breaking symmetry, and then reimporting into Zbrush to do that?

    • @FlippedNormals
      @FlippedNormals  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes that's exactly it! :) For production, it's really important that the topology is symmetrical, or you're in a world of pain. Obviously you need to break symmetry if you have 3 arms and such, but in general you really wanna keep it symmetrical.

    • @JettzCG

      Was just about to ask this myself, good thing I scrolled down lmao.

    • @BathroomTile
      @BathroomTile 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      But by symmetrical, you don't mean that every vertex on the right has a mirrored one on the left at the exact negative value, right? Just that for each polygon on one side there's a mirrored one on the other side, but with its position tweaked to become asymmetrical, right? Thanks for answering by the way.

    Just throwing it out there but there are some fantastic 'children's Cross-Section Books' that illustrate from the skin outwards how all manner of things are put together -- they've been one of my go-to references in the old school camp for years (I found about 1/2 of my collection at those discount book sales that pass through time to time. Stephen Biesty's stuff is great :) you can grab one in Hardcover from Amazon for all of $3-$8 heheh :D anatomy for the organics, Biesty for the rest :P

    Couldn't they possibly Ziva Dynamics the hulk? My guess is they use a complex subsurface muscle system with a bunch of mat caps while they test animation. Eventually that affecting the surface mesh?...

    • @FlippedNormals
      @FlippedNormals  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No idea if they used Ziva on it, but we've used it on recent movies. You still need to sculpt bespoke blend shapes though, as they have to be crafted by hand. Combine it with an awesome muscle sim and you're golden.
