This is one of the most amazing works I've seen. You're incredible. That soldier actually has the thousand yard stare. Your sculpture is alive. Thank you so much for sharing, Elliot.
I love that you referenced Ninja Scroll when talking about that part of the lip. That was a hallmark style of a lot of anime that's almost gone now. Those characters always felt so dimensional. Thanks for the tutorial!
The sculpture is amazing on its own but your understanding of the ugly phases in sculpture plus anatomy is incredibly inspiring and impressive. Great tips as well!
thanks for this. I'm just getting into clay, and now I have all these pointers and more videos to look forward to. you are as a good as being in a class.
@@uncleshome3315 if you wanna be specific 'veterans' is short for 'military veteran' as you can be a veteran in many occupations or fields, so referring to someone as a veteran is technically a shortened term. :)
This is freaking amazing. I learned more in an hour than I can believe. I'm playing around with Monster Clay and waxes, but without real background like this, you're really winging it. In short, thanks for making these.
@@AndyTanguay Thank you, is monster clay the same as modelling clay? Im trying to figure out what clay animators use for marquettes, they looks similar
@@rainbow_2225 it’s definitely a modeling clay. It all depends on what you like and feel comfortable with. If you’re talking about stop motion animation, I think a lot of those in modern stop motion like at Laika are some kind of foam over an armature. And if you’re talking about concept sculptures for animation, once again, that can be whatever feels right to you. I know Pixar had some artists that used Sculpey. At least years ago.
Gosh! There is a lot more involved in this than I could have ever imagined. I had heard about anatomy in art but I had no idea how much was considered in sculpting a bust, those speed builds, which I really enjoy and am amazed by, make it look so simple. Oh and thanks for putting 'Let's Get Physical' in my head, which I can't get rid of now :D
This is so helpful and instructional!! And such a pleasure that you don't say "Um" 50 million times like some other TH-cam sculptors do... can't wait to start trying my hand at sculpting!
The thumbnail looked a lot like clickbait to me at first, but.. WTF - You're absolutely talented! I'm so stunned right now!! You definetely got me as a new subscriber :-)
I am a purple heart veteran and an artist. And just gotta say wow man this is so cool. I would love to know this skill to make memorials for my fallen brothers.
This is a very well made video, I like how you sculpt the piece, and casually comment/explain things, and drop some lines here and there that are sort of a bit humorous. It is also a cool thing that you record voice over the silent footage instead of filming video and audio together. These 50 minutes are much easier to watch than a good lot of the 10-minute videos out there. And I like the sculpture itself of course, it is the reason I clicked on your video in the first place.
What a beautiful sculpture ,it was a joy to watch ..you made it look so easy .. I loved all the details you put on him ..I particularly liked his torch as my Father was in the Navy and I have a lot of memories of playing with his and later holding it when he worked on the engine of his car..lol..funny how silly things like that can make you smile ..He is a beautiful piece of work 😀
By far one of the best sculpture tutorial on TH-cam. I love how much you took the time to explain everything in detail. I would appreciate more Videos, probably human body, Torso or faces like Apollo. :D awesome work
please do more, i have supplanted 'your' videos for all others on TH-cam, over the last few days- even watching them over... ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL.. i am sincerely considering beginning sculpting.. THANK YOU

Fantastic! You are quite an artist! I am wanting to expand my sculpting by learning to do busts. I will have to look up some of your other videos. Aside from great technique instruction, coverage of all tools, clay, chemicals, and set-up is very important and many people leave these out or skim over them.
Very impressive; great presentation as well. The instruction is spot on, you have (and explain) reasons for your actions with a result already in mind.

Amazing stuff. Always wanted to sculpt, I have all the tools but I get stage fright every time. I'm ok with drawing painting and tattooing and people say that I draw like people sculpt but somehow never tried. Gonna watch your vids more today while painting. Thank for your time spent doing it.
It’s super hard and takes a lot of practice. Just because you are good at drawing/painting does not mean you will be good at sculpting- they are very different things. I do all three and sculpting has by far been the most challenging thing I’ve ever done. Two years of practice and still challenging. For sure start working at it ASAP, only way to get better. Good luck.
Delightful thoughts, so rare and refreshing to hear that your anatomy is up to scratch. The project was finished at 29:56 in my opinion though. After that singular point, you were actually removing from this peace. It could even be refered to as art at that point for many people Im shore. Yet it was too upsetting to see you removing and flattening and dulling what was so powerful. I love being able to see the reflection of the tools, the energy and focus in only certain areas, leaving you, as a viewer to transform your suggestive marks into some understanding of their own. This is when the concept of art is born for an on looker and only then, what you leave out is what you are giving the viewer. At that point for that one viewer, you become an artist and if only for that one person, your work communicates by suggestion. The problem, is that when we give too much detail, we are actually saying; well I know you won´t understand unless I show them how I want them to feel as I do. Yet you only need give them the tools within your work to understand. Sometimes it is enough to finish a part of an eye or focus on a small area of continuety in technique. Only then will the viewer see your emotions and feel you. Well, luckily, we are all very different. I understand that this was a tutorial about your work flow and process for others to see. Yet, it was a great shame seeing you pass that point for me. Oh thank you for the effort though. Be careful using those solvents, I have spent a life working with magic markers, silk screen cleaner solvents and spray glue along with retouch dyes, so now at 63, I cant even cope with a perfume without being very sick. Just a warning.
It's true, I really like the gestural stuff as well. Sometimes it becomes a compulsion to keep smoothing but definitely agree with your point of view. Thanks for watching and I'll make sure to be careful around those solvents!
