    I driven Alcan every spring for work I would leave in Mid Feb for training in March, check rides and the season would go from April to Sept or Oct most years. Did the trip 24 round trips. Never had many issues on the road or mechanicals. I have my vehicle worked on and prepped before leaving and before going home after. 7 to 8 days of driving. I am retired now. Gee's Mukluks Annies is a must-stop!

    My Great Uncle was there in 1943 and was one of the lead engineers for Corp of Engineers who did the Alcan between White Horse and Fairbanks. They lived in tents all year, unfortunately some did not make it. I have some of his photos of the wild area before any roads built, spectacular.

    Drove the Alcan in 2019 as part of our FL to AK three month trip. We had no problems with the highway pulling our RV and Destruction Bay was a beautiful stop. I think we actually stopped short at a nice lake then again once in Destruction Bay to simply get a sticker. The ice build up was definitely a factor on your rig but I would suggest being careful about just kicking it off. Use a broom or wooden stick or plastic shovel but be careful. With the added weight of the ice, your efforts to clear it could cause more damage. On our trip we crossed the Canada/US border several times and the only time we any delay was on our initial US to Canada crossing. What held us up and it was truly our fault, was a small bottle of CBD cream my wife had for a recent injury. Had to bring it into the station, fill out some paper work, and then turn it over to the Mounties. They told us if we could get a Canadian Doctor to write a prescription for it, we could purchase it locally. Our impressions on both sides of the border were these folks were just doing their jobs and it's really up to travelers to know what documentation etc., they need.

      Yes when my husband and I go to visit some family in northern Alberta and British Columbia then go to Alaska I make sure I carry all my husband medication in original containers. Double check anything unprescribe. Plus I carry my husband's medical records in case he needs medical treatment. Make sure insurance is up to date etc. I make a list and check it three times. I have traveled all over Canada. In fact we had to have our RV work on in Whitehorse, Yukon. Needed to wait three days to get parts in. But it was actually reasonable and the owners very nice.

      We happened to get a custom’s trainer. She was GOOD! Friendly & got the information she needed out of us without ticking us off. We complimented her on it & she said she keeps telling the customs guys to be nice, you get better results! Some just prefer intimidation & she shook her head. BTW we were all legal & stuff. It also wasn’t busy so we could chat.

    Great story! All that extra weight from the ice + frost heaves = Bent spring. What happens is, and you can kind of see it at about 3:31 in the video, is that the trailer is fishtailing a little. The side to side motion of the heavy trailer twisting sideways on the axle bent the clips on the leaf spring. Leaf springs are designed to work up and down and are not good at side to side motion. We could learn a thing or two about kindness from our neighbors to the north!

    • @piquat1
      @piquat1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the trailer is swaying it's not weight or ice in itself. If it's swaying, it's weight distribution. Considering they've lost the same spring before, my bet is they don't load it properly. Unless it was ice throwing off the weight distribution the first time, which I doubt. Could just be designed poorly too. Campers aren't the best sometimes.

      @@NoOrdinaryPath If you're sure you're loading it correctly, I'd start making frequent stops inspecting it once it's fixed.
      If it were me I'd probably call a few companies that do suspension mods and ask them if they'd take a look at some pics. If you can get around the sales pitches you might find you're issue. They'd be they people that would know inferior designs.

      @@NoOrdinaryPath I couldn't recall, so I went back and watched the Nov. 20 video and noticed that both the fridge and water heater are on that side of the trailer and right over that axel. The fridge sits right over the axel with the spring that keeps failing. It's heavy, and I'm betting as a family of five near full most of the time.
      You should get a four-tire weight. This is where they weigh each axel. I'm betting with the fridge and items stored in the rear of the RV, you are exceeding the weight limit of the axel. It will tell you if you need to move some things around in the RV. Short of that,
      Remember that everything in the back of that axel is riding on that rear axel. I'd check on what I have stored on the side that keeps failing and move some of the heavier items to the opposite side and/ or forward as close to the axel as you can. Remember, this is a cantilever, so if you have many heavy items in the back of the rig, that adds more twisting force to the axel. It works like a lever increasing the pressure (weight) on that rear spring and tire. The spring will resist some of that, but it will put extra strain on the spring causing it to break or twist apart like this one did. Travel safe!

    Been to Alaska 4 times and only traveled Destruction Bay twice, 1st time was beginning of Sept and the roadwork was done for the year, and the road was I pretty good shape, very few bumps. But the 2nd time was a real nightmare. Did that one in June and no work done, between Whitehorse and the boarder, it was 20 miles an hour, top speed and as low as 5 never again. Of course we’ve done Top of the World twice, and first time was a nightmare, 2nd time was very relaxing…so best time to travel the roads to and through Alaska are after tourist season to enjoy the roads😂

    I love the Alcan! I have driven it 3 times and it has been a blast. Sorry that you guys had problems but still made the most of it. My guess is that the ice built up and caused you to be over weight (ice is heavy). Then you add in those nasty frost heaves and that is a disaster waiting to happen. Imagine hitting one of those heaves and all that weight slamming down on your suspension. I have seen a 5th wheel driving in front of me get ALL 4 tires off the ground on those things! Stay safe out there and keep up the great videos!
    I would be curious to know what the weight is on each tire when you are loaded up for travel.

    • @NoOrdinaryPath
      @NoOrdinaryPath  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I'm sure that is what happened. We didn't realize that was a possibility. Even as we noticed all the ice build up we just didn't think about the weight it was adding. I'm so glad to be through it now and on to warmer temps. We did enjoy our time in Canada even though it was sprinkled with vehicle issues.

    You need to find weight scales and weigh. The way your tires are squatted I can't believe your not overloaded, remember your eq hitch is shifting weight to the trailer and with the added weight of the ice compounded the problem.

  • @brianturck274

    Pretty sure after breaking the first leaf spring I would scale the loaded trailer.. find out exactly what that trailer axles weights are.. and yes ice has a lot to do with added weight.. a loaded trailer and tight turns put a lot of stress on those axle springs.. ice can make your trailer overweight very easily.. overweight trailer will put a lot of stress on springs..

    • @NoOrdinaryPath
      @NoOrdinaryPath  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We had new axels, springs, cross bars installed, and new suspension installed weeks before leaving for Alaska. And we weighed it all before leaving. We were probably carrying more water weight than usual so there was that weight. We are pretty sure there may be a defect of some kind as this is an ongoing issue.

    Ialways travel with water inside juice bottles, soda bottles an make sure you have heated pads on all tanks. Water tanks and sewage tanks too. Soon we all be mandated for covid19 shots. Im not looking forward to this either.

    Great video, but I don't believe this trip broke you. You guys took two vehicles, don't know many RVers who can afford to take two car's on a family trip.

      Not a family trip... We live full time on the road - we don't have a house. Took a job in AK and spent more than we made. Then broke all sorts of things on our HOUSE (RV) on the way back down. Yes it broke us. Its all good though. We've got great duck tape and good spirits. 😉❤️

      Now don't go twisting our words. 😜 I'm sure they are lovely people. But Google said the business was permanently closed and all we saw were private property garages. The guy at the gas station said yeah they're open but no business signs or anything. Not going to go knocking on doors - that seems a bit shady.
