Ender 3 Pro - Change Filament Mid-Print

  • Sometimes you may want to change filament mid-print because your spool is almost out or you want to change filament color/type. In this video, I show you how to do just that. I cover changing the filament manually at the printer and adding stops to your gcode file in Cura. The process isn't hard, but knowing what you're doing ahead fo time can save you from wasting a print.

      You kinda skipped over the most important thing... changing out the filament... Th last thing I want is a jam.. What is the best method? do I cut the filament and try push that through with the old filament or do I pull it out and possible clogg the PTFE tube???

      Hi. I just saw this, I don’t get alert when people reply to existing comments ☹. This was one of my early videos, and I did a video on changing the filament before this, so I didn’t think I needed to cover actually swapping the filament. Based on the comments I have gotten, I should have. With the stock firmware, I used to carefully pull the filament out and feed the new filament in, then purge until it was primed. I think you can also get into the movement menu and unload the filament that way. With Marlin 2.0 and the TFT35, I go under the extruder menu and unload the filament.

      @@3DPrintscape I used the pause at layer height in Cura, when it was paused the change filament timed out. I was still about to change it over though as the head was hot enough, but couldn’t purge. I had set the purge amount to 0 on resume and it didn’t give me the option to purge when resuming (my guess is if this is 0 it overrides the purging step, so maybe it’s worth always putting something there just as a backup).
      As I resumed from the pause though I did a manual pause, and when I resumed that it gave me the option to purge. I might try again and set a purge value in the pause at later height (and maybe that will then give me the option to manually purge). Would also be good to see why the change filament option is timing out and if that happens again.

      @3DPrintscape  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi. If it is, I haven’t been able to figure out how to do it. Post firmware will allow you to purge some filament through, but that’s the best I’ve seen. I think that the issue is there is no way to guarantee the x-axis won’t hit the print if the z-axis is lowered to print a line.

I understand why you didn't add the filament changing part because it's about how to tell the printer to pause midway by itself rather than how to change the filament. Is there a way to use these methods and actually turn off the machine? Then resume the print? Do you have any videos or advice for something like this if this doesnt work for me?

    • @3DPrintscape
      @3DPrintscape  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi. Some printers have the resume on power failure feature that works well, but the one on the Ender 3 has been very unreliable for me. If you want to pause mid-print for a while, I would keep the power on but set the extruder temperature very low. If you go this route, make sure to test it on a small print, so you don’t lose all that time/filament. Also, make sure to clean up any stings left behind from the extruder moving away from the print and heat the extruder and purge some filament before resuming.

    So is it important to preheat the extruder/filiment when changing spools? When I first did this due to the spool getting caught on the reel, I paused it and untangled it (wich took me a while) then I hit resume without preheating the PLA, the result was almost like it slipped a layer resulting in a very visible line on the print wich later came apart very cleanly, would this not have happened if I had pre heated the extruder first?

      Hi. I have not had that experience. That said, you do need to make sure that your not moving the axis when changing the filament. If you push down a little you would see the behavior your describing.

    Your printer is not setup right, your whole print head jumped when it hit a little bump this means the wheels are way too lose. Properly setup a small bump like that the hotend would just smooth it nothing should move.

      Hi. You are correct that the everything was not tight. I have my printer apart a lot for doing videos/mods. I didnt think it was a big issue as the video wasn't related to that.

      Hi. Sorry about that. When I made the video I didn’t think it was needed because I had a different one covering that process. Sense then, I realized duplicating things like that as needed for videos is fine.

    The one thing I came to see was the only part you skipped. The part where you physically change the filament, and then you failed to show how to purge it. You just skipped right over it.
