    Can't ever imagine a real swordsman doing this, because there is a saying about the two people a swordsman fears the most - the master, and the novice. Being that beginners tend to erratic and unpredictable things, so who is to say he is going to attempt to parry your strike instead of just suicidally thrusting forward, killing you and possibly killing himself.

      as Orry said, every Southern gentleman was expected to know how to use a sword, and his father made sure he had lessons. Someone who has been training for over 10 years before even stepping foot in a military academy would be very dangerous with a blade. Bent, from Georgia also had an education, although his relationship to his father was not so cordial.

Some you need to stream but it is very easy to watch every one of them for free if you don't mind ripping off production companies. Forget American network TV, networks are only good for good resolution sports broadcasting. AMC, BBC, Showtime, HBO, Netflix, and Amazon have great series in production right now, others have recently ended. I suggest you watch Peaky Blinders, that's a great fucking show.

      Not in any professional setting. Not even in most sporting environments. But if you want to believe that your long blowy hair is the preferred choice, and that the only reason why upwards of 80% of men get haircuts is because they can't "pull it off" like you, go right ahead. We exist most clearly in our imaginations.

    Why not just "accidently" cut off a couple of his fingers. People don't tend to guard their arms and hands as much when fencing and weapon sparring. If you can't hold a weapon you can't fight. If you can't move properly you are at a great disadvantage. Little cuts add up real fast in a fight.

  • @wiskadjak
    @wiskadjak 6 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    This was actually a reasonbly good stage representation of a period sabre duel. Right up until the spin move. Modern fight choreographers are totally addicted to this unmarshall bit of frippery & need to remove it from their repetoire.

    • @FlorisGerber
      @FlorisGerber 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ya, its some pretty nice fencing, right upt to swayze remembering what his profession really is and putting in a pirouette. I know, the choreographer is the one at fault. And I agree that pirouttes should not be used nearly as often as they are.

    • @NUFCMVFC
      @NUFCMVFC 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, the wrist move just before was good. I would say this is a visual thing, eg experienced Fencers can tell the finer differences if someone is overwhelming the other defensively, but to the lay person it still looks like people "clanging swords", so something as flamboyant as the spin-move Pirouette thing is needed as a visual cue to illustrate just how superior Main was and the degree to which he dominated Bent

    • @gregrock7451
      @gregrock7451 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah...I thought he was doing fairly well until he did that spin/slash thing...then I was like, "Oh what the hell? He learned that from his Dad? I didn't know there was any former Jedi turned gentleman farmers in the Antebellum South."
      That particular type of fencing is something I don't know much about. Then again, I didn't think that soldiers who were issued that type of curved sabre did much fencing. Reason being: I thought that were typically carried by mounted calvarymen-- particularly officers-- were made of relatively flexible Solingen steel, and were intended to be used mostly for lopping off, or at least fatally cleaving, the heads of enemy soldiers from a saddle at full gallop.
