For someone that is from the South I can only say that Patrick Swayze was very accurate by explaining the way we raise our children. Whenever we travel to the North my kids will stick out like a sore thumb. They would never call a man or woman by their first names. It’s always ma’am and sir. My 7 year old boy opens the door for his 17 year old sister and would never question that. No, we are not saying that women are incapable or need help. It’s just our way of that extra respect and care we show for them.

Right, because this is still the nineteenth century. 😒 It sounds like you believe all Northerners are rude, when they really just want to get to the point. I’ve lived in both regions.

Exactly! Born and raised in Texas, my mom taught my brother and I to always call an adult; Mr., Mrs. or Miss/Ms. Unless they give us permission to call them by their first name or if they are a priest, so it would be Father Matt. Most of the older men still hold doors open for women and let them walk in first, and we still stand whenever an elderly person walks into the room and offer our seat so they can sit down.

Funnily enough, I'm a Northern girl who spent part of my life in China, and when I moved back to the Northeast it seemed like most people here knew close to nothing about the American South. I can't really tell where I picked up the habit of calling people "sir" and "ma'am", but yes, it does seem to stick out weirdly up here. Thanks for sharing this information!

I absolutely love this mini-series. I was 12 when this came out. I remember my mom letting me stay up the one night of the week when this came on. I really feel this show didn't get enough credit for all the actors. Patrick Swayze did a absolutely wonderful job in this. So did James Read. I have all the books, mini-series set and I love the music in this. The costumes, sites, EVERYTHING IS SO wonderful. And it had some great acting in it. This will always be one of my all-time favorite shows. RIP all the actors who played in this that all gone. I will never forget this show.

This series was so well done, it shows perfectly how we got to the point of civil war, two different regions with different cultures and values, and they never really went away. I was 13 when this first aired and I stayed up to watch this as well, well worth it.

I cannot believe there was not a 25th Anniversary of this glorious film. It is a feast for the eyes, ears, heart and mind. I used it to teach my students. And they fell in love with history because of it.
Thank you Patrick for standing up for values and honor. Why am I not shocked that Hollywood would see that as a liability.Good grief!🤦‍♀️

This TV mini series never got the recognition it deserved. I remember watching Part 1 and Part 2 on TV back in the mid 80's. Between the actors, (both the characters and the movie stars) the music, the scenes, (including all the battle scenes) the costumes, it was just incredible! And having the privilege of going to Charleston and visiting, seeing where this was shot, walking in history, it is something I will not forget And the music by Bill Conti, outstanding. This by far was Patrick Swayze's finest work. I applaud all the actors who starred in this. And 35 years later, still watching it, well it's seems like it was just yesterday.

I remember another TV (mini)series from the 1980s about the civil war: The Blue and the Gray. I had to look it up and was surprised how short that series was. Original release dates were just three days in November 1982. North and South aired (with long breaks in between) from 1985 to 1994.

This was not only one of the best mini series, but also a one of a kind cast. I wacht it whenever re-runs are on and I always fall back in love with the story, the friendship between Orry & George. That's the core of the whole thing, if you ask me. And the soundtrack ... wow. spot on! I was in my teens when I first saw it, and I, too, learned so much about the Civil War through this and reading Jakes' books after watching the mini-series. It was definitely education for me. And I didn't care for school when I was in high school, but Jakes drew me in with this trilogy (although I don't care for Book III. Book II is my favorite one but love I too).

Hec man almost 4 decades later........ still watching it on TH-cam, and still outstanding. A brilliant miniseries that was so underrated. What a cast too, so many big names in it. It was also my first introduction to Patrick Swayze, who I felt in my bones was going to be a big star after watching this unknown at the time. One of the best film adaptations I have ever seen based on the books, by John Jakes. The American Civil War as tragic as it was, was also one of the most fascinating periods in history to me , and it remains an emotional topic.

At about 14 I use to watch this in the late 80ties. It made a huge impact on me. I live in Denmark and it was big here too. Strangely enough, 5-6 years later I was a professional soldier myself in a war. I remember coming home and found my sweetheart with another man. I started drinking. Had big problems in the years after. A lot of hate and aggression. I watched it again 10 years later and found it totally different. As a big kid, it was exciting. As an adult it became emotional..

First time I had heard of and watched Patrick Swayze act. If you haven't seen North & South, you should buy the DVD & watch. Like me, I'm sure you would watch it more than once. The world lost a very special man when Patrick left this earth way too soon. This was such a good mini-series. Great adaptation of a great story with great casting and acting and a musical score that makes you look around for your damn horse so you can leap astride it and charge into battle.

I was 10 when the first series came out too. Watched every minute of it, and couldn't wait for series 2 the next year. Bought the DVD set when it came out, and rewatch every year or so. The opening music is nostalgic for me.

Patrick Swayze was the best! Liked the series but I feel his intensity made it work! The magnificent character of Virgilia was in a class in its own.

Somehow when I was 11 I got sucked into watching Book 1 in the 80's on TV. By the time it ended I remember waiting for Book 2 and it seemed like it took a yr. This series just reminds me of being a kid and watching it with my dad, the history buff that he was and as am I at 48.

My all-time favorite mini-series. One of the best historical "movies" I've ever seen, and I read North & South trilogy after I saw the mini-series. Loved it, and I read Jakes' Kent Family Chronicles 8-book series as well. Amazing author! You read his work and feel like you're living in the era he's putting forth. Love it!

Remember being allowed to stay up and watch this as a 10 year old. TV shows in the 1980's pulled out all the stops, big budgets, big stars. Unfortunately, the 3rd series with a much lower budget and trying to introduce new characters previously never mentioned tarnished the legacy.

    • @michaelharrington75
      @michaelharrington75 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

Same. I was 10 and was allowed to watch this. I didn't like series 3 either. Orry killed immediately, Bent returning from a barn that caught on fire, and exploded. Constance getting killed, and George hooking up with Madelyn right after. All really bothered me. Plus Charles being played by a different actor, and the quality made it nearly unwatchable for me.

Let's hope that BLM and Wokism don't destroy the legacy of this masterpiece. In 2022 it's all about trying to erase the past so they can rewrite and dictate the future. So many people need to realise nothing is as simple as black and white or north or south.. people are complex beings and the civil war was a complex issue.

I was too young to appreciate this in fact I was just a baby when this series first aired on television originally but I remember as I became an older kid it replayed on television and I remember watching it with my mom night after night and I just fell in love with it and to this day at 38 years old it's still one of my favorite movies book 1 and 2. And I have always been curious to actually study at school history the part evolving the Civil War because of this series and I have read one of the three books

One amazing fact is that Patrick Swazye did 2 lead roles in 1985 that were very diverse - not just North & South but also a true cult classic movie "Red Dawn", where he plays the older wiser brother saving his family, friends & town from a Communist invasion force.
Any Swazye fan will appreciate it !

I did not realize until recently the actor connections between this miniseries and Star Trek. Kirstie Alley (Saavik) from Star Trek II, Jonathan Frakes (Commander Riker) from Star Trek The Next Generation, John Anderson (Kevin Uxbridge) from Star Trek The Next Generation, Anthony Zerbe (Admiral Matthew Doughetry) from Star Trek: Insurrection and Jean Simmons (Rear Admiral Norah Satie) from Star Trek The Next Generation.

This was very great documentation of the series! I love the whole series NORTH & SOUTH, especially the first 2. I just personally didn't like the 3rd over as much as I did the first two, because Orry had to get killed in the begging of North & South: Heaven & Hell. But overall, I loved the whole series! Magnificent job for bringing history to life through a story!

it is so sad that today it is not possible anmore to make such good series, programs etc....... the story, the writer, the super actors, the music etc etc etc........todays program is ......s...said in one short word.....back then there was a great theme, and everything around it, also the old westerns etc......today the programm makers have no ideas, sets, actors anymore....fast computer-creations, and movies without any sence .......

I've been to Boone Hall, sometime in 1988.....Of course we went to it after seeing North and South...The trees are amazing....Of course that wasn't the original plantation house, as it burned down in real life and wasn't made of brick....I think it was rebuilt in the 1900's......Also got to see George's house, which was also in Charleston...As I recall, Boone Hall's interior isn't very big, so they used other homes for the interior shots..

Loved the first two books but felt book three was a mess and ruined a lot of stuff from the previous book.
Loved the mini series book I&II. It was spectacular, the actor's were fantastic, the sets, costumes, score just mesmerising. I learned a lot from the books and mini series. It helped begin my love for history. I just like to pretend book III never existed.
