  • Our review of the Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro after riding it since June 2020, over 13,000miles, around Germany, Austria, UK and continuing our world travels on it. Find out why we love the Tiger 900 Rally Pro, but also what we don't love about the Tiger 900 Rally Pro. This video highlights our riding experience and we address the suitabiliy of the Tiger 900 Rally Pro for round-the-world motorcycle travels.

    This is one of the best reviews I've seen. You covered everything. What I've found with motorcycle reviews is terribly annoying! Most reviews focus only on 1.) Suspension. 2.) Suspension.
    I find the most important things are never talked about. 1.) Engine vibration. 2) 1st gear ratio. 3.) 6th gear ratio. 4.) Engine RPM's during 70 mph (highway) cruising.
    Strangely, reviews almost never mention a single peep about gear ratios or the engine.
    It is astonishing to me that motorcycle reviewers automatically praise every possible engine and transmission configuration, but they are incredibly picky about handling and will find any possible reason to complain about suspension. But when you're on the street, it's the engine and the transmission that do most of the work. And motorcycles are universally geared wrong, with close ratio racing gear boxes still being used modern street legal motorcycles.

    Great review. I have been reading a lot of reviews for many different bikes. I have always liked the Tiger, but at 5.8, I didn't want a lowering kit. This review has brought me off the fence about my next bike. Thank you

      @advtravelbug6100  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry I'm seeing this comment late. Have you had a chance to test ride it yet? We lowered Fiona's Tiger significantly as she's much short than me, you can check it out here: th-cam.com/video/gS9k4fmqHzk/w-d-xo.html. But of course it's much nicer if you don't need to lower it so you don't lose ground clearance !

    Good job on the review. I have had my 2022 Rally Pro for five months and love it. I immediately replaced the stock street tires with the Scorpion STR also. I think they are about the best 50/50 street/dirt ADV tire available right now. I live in Washington State so I ride in a lot of wet conditions on and off road. Most of the pavement I ride is twisty mountain roads. The Pirellis work very well everywhere. As mention by the reviewer the bike suspension comes set up soft. Being a former motocross and desert rider I found adjusting the preload and stiffening up the suspension makes the Tiger much better off-road. Great move by Triumph to move to Showa from WP. I have owned many many motorcycles in my 53 years of riding, my last being a Ducati Multistrada Enduro which was super fast but was a handful off-road. My Rally Pro feels much lighter. I find the Tiger to be fantastic…probably the best all round bike I have ever owned. Great to see you running Mosko Moto panniers. Great bags out of Salmon River Washington.

    Great review from a great rider and excellent camera work Fiona. I hope you are enjoying riding the bike now also Fi on your trip to Morocco .
    I tried the GT Pro when I was looking for a new bike and thought it was excellent. The only thing it did not have was shaft drive which I thought I really wanted. I ended up with the F850GSA for 2 months but due to technical problems and after a lot of shouting at BMW I now have a 2020 1250GSA which is rather good 😜👍🏻😘

    I don’t use the triumph nav so have the Tom Tom rider and mount, also non factory, 2 extra waterproof Oxford USB ports on handlebars, after market weighted bar ends that help with vibration damping, if your not full off road I can highly recommend the Michelin Anakee Adventure tyres. Thank you 😊🙏🏻 That’s nice to hear. Shame on me if I didn’t go into enough details about the comfort of the bike because it’s something I feel very strongly about. It’s incredibly comforable for long distance travelling and the seat is awesome (very comfy and heated), such a smooth ride and the stock windscreen is perfect for touring. As for the riding position we will elaborate on that more in our upcoming review of the Touratech Tiger 900 Rally Pros but it suits me perfectly for on road and off road riding and I love how many things you can customise on the stock model to suit your riding style. Bret Tkacs has a great YT video taking through all of them - worth checking out 👍

      How do you like the new rougher "T Plane" engine on the highway? Does it sound good? The old triple really sounded good and I'm still not sure about the new T Plane engine design. I am not sure why Triumph completely changed their engine design, when they were so highly regarded and known for good engines.

    • @advtravelbug6100
      @advtravelbug6100  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Ritalie Hi Ritalie, I didn’t ride the older generation Tigers so can’t compare but there are many benefits to the new T plane engine … it feels more like a V twin at lower revs (for improved off road) and the centre of gravity is now also lower than before. I like the sound personal but I never rode the old one so can’t compare I’m afraid.

    Great review. I have the gt pro, which I love. I find the electronic rear suspension really useful for swapping between solo, pillion and full luggage set up. I didn't realise the rally pro doesn't have that feature. I agree that the sat nav should be better, which is where the Africa twin scores.

We had the white Snowdonia Tiger you can see in our profile picture last year, Sher Khan (the Matt green khaki in this video) this year and we picked up two new Sapphire black Tiger 900 Rally Pros from Touratech a month ago and have already put quite a bit of mileage on that. Glad you enjoyed the review! We know the low tyre pressure isn’t always an issue and it can easily be taken care of but we wanted to mention it as we know a few other people had noticed it and I guess it can be a little annoying. This is great! I've been waiting for a review of this bike for long term, two-up touring! I'm planning to do something similar soon. Can you provide a little more information on a few questions?
    1. I read your hard vs soft luggage article and wanted to ask, how do you secure your soft luggage when stopped in a city and you're looking around? How do you protect your electronics (what do you carry?) when travelling with soft luggage? Where do you keep them?
    2. I see that some of your nights are spent in tents. Any advice for long term moto-camping? (I saw a link in your website to a page on camping but it just took me to "Our Story". Several links did that actually, fyi)
    3. I see you're in large riding boots and gear. How do you handle stopping in city to walk around and look around with that heavy duty gear? Do you just wear it to walk around? Do you change into walking shoes for parts of the day where you walk around?
    4. Are you still in the Klim gear? Can you confirm that when all zipped up it is waterproof but when the vents are open it breathes well?
    5. When you're both on the bike and fully loaded with gear, what sort of gas mileage are you getting?

      Sure, always happy to answer any questions :-)
      1. We used the Mosko Moto soft luggage solution and found the locking system worked well enough for the side panniers and duffle. Our electronics all live in the tank bag which converts into a rucksack and we used to just carry it around.
      2. Thanks I'll check the link out again but we currently use the Lone Rider ADV tent (Hilleberg tents are also great if you want to go lighter), Cumulus Xlite 400 sleeping bags, MSR stove and Sea to Summit collapsible silicon pots, pans, plates etc. and we have a titanium Spork. We also have a couple of ultralight Helinox chairs and a good silk sleeping liner.
      3. I always change :-) Fiona doesn't as her Adventure Boots aren't as heavy haha Before I would just change into trainers and leave my boots next to the bike (so far they never got stolen) but right now I have a Touratech pair which consists of a super comfy Gore Tex boot perfect for exploring the city and an outer shoe. They are also lockable so I now lock the outer boot with a simple light Abus lock and then walk around the city in the inner shoes. As for the gear, we usually lock into the bike together with our helmets. The Mosko ADV lock always worked best for us !
      4. We are no longer in KLIM gear as we switched to Touratech but yes I confirm the KLIM gear was 100% waterproof once zips were done up and very breathable when they were open but only until 30 degrees Celsius and from 32, 33 degrees upwards I was dying in it which is why we switched to Touratech as it's much more breathable and we needed something that would keep us cooler in hot climates!
      5. Hmmm ... I don't know exactly to be honest but we don't get 400km with a full tank ... I also know that I don't ride in the most efficient way hahah as now we are on two Tiger 900 Rally Pros and I always seem to need more petrol than Fiona lol I'm sorry I can't answer the question very accurately. It was similar to what it was on our old F800GS.
      6. Only on the GT Pro, not the Rally Pro. You can on the new Tiger 1200 Rally Pro ;-) It's not a bad thing as it's one more electronic thing that may break on you (often less electronics are better) but I would have liked to have it.

      1. Can you share the tank bag you use?
      2. We're planning to go up through Norway, Sweden, and Finland where it might get pretty cold. Our sleeping bags are good for that but they don't pack the smallest. Any advice on that?
      3. Can you share the new boots you are wearing? Are they as protective as the Toucans? I have the same ones btw! I love them. :D
      4. Just to clarify, you switched to Touratech because it was better hot weather gear? Does it have the same feature where the water proofing is built in without needing a separate layer?
      6. That's actually a big shame. I feel a lot of the other reviews I've watched/read mentioned they have it but glossed over the fact that the RP doesn't have it. I was really looking forward to it. :(

    Hi - I've being wanting to upgrade to a Triumph Scrambler XE, but I've heard that the Rally 900 is actually better off road to my surprise. What are your thoughts on a little bit more technical off-road on the Tiger? Thanks for a great review!

      Hi Marcelo, that is exactly what the Tiger 900 Rally Pro was designed to do best. I rode both the Scrambler and Tiger 900 Rally Pro at the Triumph Adventure Experience in Wales. I was in a group of people with all different abilities (beginners to pro level - split into different group). Everyone agreed that the Tiger 900 Rally Pro is much easier to handle off road and more confidence inspiring. The Scrambler can definitely handle off road but you need to be a much better / more confident off road rider. As my friend Bob likes to say: you need to ride it like a hooligan ;-) If you want the best Triumph bike for the most technical terrain then for sure I think the Tiger 900 Rally Pro is your best bet. Hi Tim, I did but literally had 10 min. with it off road so very hard to draw a fair comparison with the Tiger 900 Rally Pro which I have done over 20k miles on now. The Tiger is lighter and I prefer the slim design compared to the typical GS “rugby player” feel when you sit on it 🤣 I think the Tiger is more agile and easier to ride off road. Obviously both great bikes so a lot comes down to personal preferences. Compared to my old F800GS the difference is phenomenal but with the new F850 GS it’s more about personal preference and I certainly feel more confident (and comfortable) on the Tiger. It also has a lot more fancy electronics and nice touches like heated seats if you care about those.

      I had no major issues with the bikes when the video was taken. Only the over-sensitive tyre pressure warning sign. However we continued riding throughout the winter and I didn’t know (my bad) that clutch needs to be adjusted from time to time especially when using the clutch a lot for slow off road riding. As a result of not paying attention I broke the entire clutch … initially I thought I burnt out the clutch plates but was horrified to learn the entire clutch had to be replaced as a cost of 1,000 Euros. Our biggest issues to date has been that on 3 occasions we needed to replace something and it took each time 10 days + to get parts delivered in Europe. Just to be clear the parts we broke during crashes and had nothing to do with the reliability of the bike but given that parts have to come from the U.K. it’s a bit of a nightmare since Brexit. About the engine heat, I personally don’t have any issues with that at all but I know other people that ride the Tiger and they feel that it gives off engine heat. So if you ask my personal opinion I have no issues at all but I do know that some people disagree with this opinion.

    I wonder if the tire pressure reading is “off” as a result of altitude change. I’m in colombia and ride a different bike but when I’m in the mountains above 1500 meters I have to reset the atmospheric sensor (which is basically just resetting the tire pressure system) because it gives false pressures, also when I descend I have to do the same. I don’t get a warning but when I check the pressure with my my cheap manual gauge to give me an “average” I can tell the auto sensor is way off and needs to be reset. Then it equals my cheap gauge more or less.

Fiona is 5’3 and she rides the same bike lowered by Touratech so trust us, the bike won’t be big for your height ☺️ You should be fine on the stock bike with standard seat!

    I've tried the Rally pro and also the GT low versions and liked them both. They are great to ride and have all the features I could possibly want + they are also very fuel efficient. I just did 100km yesterday on the GT low and it averaged around 4.0 litres per 100km when riding on the highway with cruise control on. There's just one problem.... No matter how I try, they just look so ugly to me, especially the front end. I find that the KTM SAR 1290 it one of the least ugly ADV bikes out there, but it's a lot more expensive bike and I hate the fact that KTM hides features (like quickshifter and extra ride modes) behind a paywall on top of the high price of the base model.

      No way! I found it super easy to set up. Worked instantly for me. I only don't use it because it requires the battery to be in standby all the time and then it doesn't last long enough. I think I followed a simple TH-cam tutorial and I'm really bad with technology so it really wasn't so complicated ... maybe try again? Sucks to have a feature that you can't use if you wanted to.

    Why do you keep trading bikes in for the same model? How can you speak to reliability when you're constantly riding a brand new bike?

    • @advtravelbug6100
      @advtravelbug6100  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve never traded in a brand new bike. Our motorbike together with all our things is stuck in Colombia since the pandemic (in fact I just sold it as it’s not good having a bike sitting in a garage for two years not being ridden) and we’ve been fortunate enough to collaborate with brands and get sponsorships including use of the bike as is the case right now with Touratech. I meant this comment in general… I agree with the point that was being made about riding a bike with zero electronics around the world but I was just pointing out that if you buy a bike from a reliable brand and look after it well it’s also possible to enjoy the comforts of a bike with electronics. Our old GS bike was from 2013, we looked after it very well and never had any issues with it …

    You are wrong on only one point. When you shut the bike off in off-road mode and turn it back on it prompts you to hit the mode and check button to stay in off road. I find it amazing that other TH-camrs have complained about this feature. Really? We can't even hit a button twice without being bothered? They made it as simple as can be with being compliant due to safety requirements.

    • @advtravelbug6100
      @advtravelbug6100  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you are right but if you don’t pay much attention to the screen and just ride off you are suddenly back in road mode and have to stop to go back into off road. And you are right, it’s a safety feature and I understand why it’s there but I just wanted to be as critical as possible to highlight what I love and what I don’t and that’s one point I don’t like so much … just personal points of view …
