Dude, I've been in the video industry for 30 yrs and the quality of your videos is FANTASTIC . I don't think your subs realise how incredibly difficult it is to get the old footage and details you use to create these gems👍 Thank you ! 😃 PS : It looks like the Zero R No.3 is here in Australia, it's got New South Wales number plates at 16:38.
I don't understand why but I never get any notifications for your new videos. And you should complain to TH-cam because your channel is legitimately good
Are you sure you haven't mixed up Ikeda's ZERO driving theory from team SPIRAL. Rin's r32 was bonkers fast though,so i can see why you would be thinking that 😂
HKS didn't just become a globally recognized tuner/parts company, they are seen in every corner of car culture. You can pop the hood of any tuner/muscle/euro/rock crawler/swamp buggy and see HKS parts.
Been a huge HKS fan ever since ripping the HKS GTR in Gran Turismo. Used their parts on my twin turbo BMW and never thought of HKS unless I was looking at the part - always worked flawlessly.
Thats awesome. Around 2000 me and my pops started building an e36 328. The first part we got that I picked out was an exhaust from HKS.(when they made stuff for the e36) By 06 it was the first 1000whp example and first to run 9s.
That’s what I’m saying. I’m tired of these titles stating that we never heard about this car. They act like the 80 babies who were teenagers in the early 2000’s are dead
The Zero R wasn't sold to our sultan, but to a semi-private collector with a pretty crazy collection. U can find the video on Galeri Kereta from a few years ago. Today the Zero R is still well maintained along with his rocketbunny fd rx7, 964, another rx7, 2 r32's and a celica. The owner also organizes a pretty big car show every year called BKS or "Borneo Kustom Show", videos are available online too
I was the editor of a local car magazine called Borneo Tuner here in Sabah, Malaysia, neighbour to Brunei. Our magazine featured the Zero R many years ago. I would gladly look for the old copy for you and send over if you are interested.
There’s a video Larry Chen made about a dealership in Japan where they mostly sell JDM legends, GTR, NSX, EVO, etc . And the guy that works there mentioned his boss (owner of the dealership) had a Zero R but then sold it not too long ago, he also has an R34 Z tune and and R33 400R, he mentioned he regrets selling the Zero R.
I am glad to know of the 'Zero R' a long time ago. In Australia we used to have a magazine 'High Performance Imports' that I had a subscription to. They published an article on the Zero R model, that would have been close to twenty years ago.
My old boss was an HKS agent here in South Australia in the 80's. Most of the "factory fitted" turbo Bluebirds came from Reynella Datsun where he worked.
What a legendary story. It kinda feels like HKS isn't as mainstream anymore (compared to where they were in the early 00s, and compared to other Japanese brands like GReddy). But in my head, that logo, with the 3 capital letters, will forever be synonymous with JDM.
I bought hks turbo timer, intake, ssq blow-off valves, and several other parts for my z32 300zx TT 2+2 back when I swapped a jdm engine into the chassis in 2004. I loved everything they sold and all their parts worked flawlessly on my Z.
I had an HKS Hyper exhaust on my car in 2009. Sr20 powered s14 with many toys. Ordered the motor from Japan and pulled it down the street to the hobby shop with a pallet jack.
HKS made their name, they build their own engines now, you can buy crate engines from them, hella expensive but honestly it's for a reason reliability and power
The Brunei sultan’s version that you mentioned “The public will probably never see” is in this video. The White R32 Zero R. The public saw, thanks to you.. Awesome content bro.
Around 2000/2001 my dad and I started modding an e36 328. I got to pick out the exhaust so being a gran turismo/tokyo xtreme racer kid i picked the hks exhaust. And thanks to tokyo xtreme racer 0 having the trailer to the original Fast and furious we went to opening weekend with the car. Had been 5 speed swapped, m3 cams, chipped and exhaust by then. I felt like the coolest 13 year old ever.😂 By 06/07 it was the first to make 1000whp and to run 9s. And it all started with an hks exhaust. Makes me glad I grew up in the garage, dyno rooms and at the drag strip. Especially during what i consider the best era for car modification.
If you buy a 400k one of a kind Zero R you are a collector. If you race it on a track in front of fans you become a legend. I wish we had more legends.
19:48 I hope this doesn't sound insensitive or exgaggerated, but my head immediately clicked the same note that it did when Satoru Iwata: fading away just before seeing their company afloat again. Well, admittedly, Iwata had a terminal sickness then, rendering him an absolute hero, but... anyways.
I feel lucky to have gotten a few HKS parts for my MKIV supra. Trying to build it to era specs and HKS is the way to go. The Carbon Ti exhaust sounds amazing btw.
IN 2019 I was at HKS and i saw both of the remaining two that were / are in Japan. one of them was the silver one and the other was Red... the Red one was getting work done to it to get 950HP and i was told that this was that owners second R32 ZR
Your implication that HKS “started the trend” of OEM turbocharging is hilarious. I especially like the subsequent B-roll of a Porsche 930. Porsche had that car on sale in the mid-1970’s…
Hot damn, that was immense. I'd be interested to see something like this on spoon and some of the other tuning companies. That's insanely rad. Awesome video, good work
I remember in the early 2000s Japanese tuning shops all around SoCal in small commercial warehouses where you could always catch a glimpse of something special coming or goin. Now you can barely find anything special driving on the streets. I’m glad I got to experience that. The fast and the furious definitely helped propel that scene shortly after.
The HKS story is one worth telling. I was fortunate enough to work for HKS USA in the early-to-mid 90s and it was a wonderful era for Japanese tuners in Japan and abroad. HKS products were legendary, and their reputation for performance, quality and reliability was well deserved. I was glad to salvage some old video footage from my time there, and to snap the photos of the Zero Rs at the HKS Co. Ltd. facility when I visited there in 1993 during my trip to the Tokyo Auto Salon.
Nissan GTR family line is one of the fastest JDM car of all time and 1989 GTR R32 is the greatest GTR of all time and the car revive the GTR line after its hiatus in 1973 and won JGTC in early 1990s and the HKS did the car pretty well
Awesome video! I don’t care how old I get or what vehicles come out, the R32 GT-R will always be my favorite. Especially in the HKS and Calsonic liveries for race cars and the Veilside R32 as the ultimate.
Glad you guys ordered a new front lip, I didn't think it looked that good either... With the other black trim pieces, I think it will look better in black than white
Alot more and more zero-Rs have been spotted in Japan recently with a degree of mods too from an aftermarket hood or wheels, to a returned engine making 800hp, to one with full alpine audio systems inside and in the trunk So eventually they did sell more than 4, and people weren't afraid to mod them
Is that a Shelby patch on the founder's left jacket sleeve? If so, cool to see the respect across JDM/American community lines long before cross-pollination was as common as it is now
I have so much respect for the legacy of HKS they really pushed the limits of the cars they built and always improving the products they created. Their parts may be pricey but it's very well worth it.
4:15 - Hey, neat! There's an 84 Pontiac Fiero Indy in the background. They only made like 2000 of those. They should probably park it in an area that's not susceptible to fire damage tho, just in case...

Correction for 17:15. The Zero R in Brunei is out in the wild running. TheFinalDrive has a video showcasing it and it's one of the top results.
You ALWAYS replace race engine oil every race. And rebuild the engine. What are you talking about? Sukuba, not Scuba....

We love our ZeroR and regularly drive it

Great summary, I never knew how extensive the history of HKS was and how involved they were in pioneering the aftermarket tuning industry.
Whenever Japanese tuning companies are brought up, literally the first name that pops in my head every single time is HKS
Another incredible story hope you guys talk about Greddy, Blitz, Cobb, Veilside, or Apexi next
