- Cosmetic appeal versus, functionality is the order of the day when building a boat. I am desperately trying to strike the balance as we intend to live on board, and the niceties of home will have to play a role in our long term cruising plans. The internal fitout is in full swing and I am totally delighted with our choice of timber trim as the remainder of the boat is fully composite ensuring a rot proof, squeak free vessel.

I've been watching for a few years now and still haven't figured out how you keep everything straight. What has been done and what still needs done, when to do it, and when not to. Your both brilliant and I'm so impressed with you and Janet's skills. ✌️😊

The most important is to don't stop. The software in head is freshly updated every day and you planning ahead. The problems begin when you take brake when you don't have time or you go for holiday. After this you push the ball from beginning until gets speed again and things will come together again. Many people don't realize one important thing and that is the boat project can take years! The circumetas can change from year to year. Priorities can change, health, financial... it is a long term project. That is why many people don't finish it.
Your woodworking makes the booat interior look sooo finiced!! Nice work u 2 !! and friends..

Safe idea to have a door within a door for all them switches. They could shut down a system at a perfect storm moment.
Counter looks great. Yes your fibre glassing skills are your best but it's like when you do your own wallpapering, You know every tiny floor and mishap rip. Someone else comes in genrally pans around and is like wow, looks great, good job!

The Tassie Oak looks nice and warm better than the blonde style of look the new boats have, push some of the saw dust into the bigger gaps or mix with some epoxy to make it all look solid. The finishing touches are really lifting the completed look mate. Full steam ahead Rossco and Janet.

You should add access doors for the electric room behind the cushions of the table bench. Make your life much easier. Since they are hidden behind the cushion they can be flush mount fiberglass panels with quick release latches. Quite possible to do any electrical work on that end laying down on a nice cushion!
Exactly right, I have cut holes behind the settee backrest, and can access most of the electrics but not quite all.Cheers

I will just recommend to cover everything what is done. Little bit epoxy on your hands will come everywhere on the door handles..you will by surprised. I have epoxy on the clears- no idea. Also after all the amazing heavy work even with building a house many people rush with finishes but in this stage they should take extra time and care. If you find your self in position when you make something and you say hmm I will change that later that is the time what I meant!

A small point perhaps, but since you had to glue up those large panels, made up from what appears to be glued up boards... some economy might have been achieved by cutting the main area of the counter top from the whole and applying smaller, discretely cut (wastage from other sections?) to fill out the "appendages"?

Yes a bit wasteful, but the grain is consistant, I was able to use almost all in smaller tops throughout the boat in anycase .Rossco

The wood work brings out an extra dimension to your new floating home. Well done Ross. Has anyone electrically connected the anchor chain to the mast during a lightning storm and put out some chain for extra grounding? We are having more electrical storms in the upper Midwest of the USA. So I just put in a whole house surge protector. Anything like that for a boat?
That us a very interesting thought,it would definitely blow the Windlass and perhaps back to the electrical system, will do some investigations on that, Wouldn't be good if you were sailing.Ross

Are you going to soften the mitred corners of the counter trim ?
maybe too late, but consider rounded corners for any place you may be bumping into while moving around
All rounded and smoothed off to a degree, had to strike a balance between ease of working and cosmetic.Pretty good now it's all done.
Timber looks good for a kayak builder marvellous what we can turn our hands too. I’m busy cutting big hulls in the deck for the hatches. And designing the window shapes a lot of bloody curves to deal with. Did your son draw up your electrical system as looking for some help in designing it for my cat. I've done metal fab for 20 years. I have to say your wood work looks great. But thats also coming from a guy thats like your dad. 😂 So take from that what you will.

Ross. Those sharp corners on the counter top should be softened. That’s a bruise waiting to happen
All rounded gently now, It was on my mind.
Just thought I would mention, wood working framing standard is within 1/8" ,cabinet making is within 1/32" but this is different. Boat building standardvsays the wood work needs to be within the boat.

Well I am stunned, 17mm solid wood….. wow that is heavy… Did you consider using foam cored doors with a 1.5mm timber laminate? , more stable and much lighter. Are you concerned with the rising waterline? With all the layers of glass, and the lining panels, the overall weight must be adding up. Fingers crossed it all turns out fine, cheers Rustie.
Rustie,All doors throughout boat are foam core, except three small kitchen cabinets doors where it matters, 5 small bench tops and the fridge top are solid. The compromise has been dealt with in all cabinetry and cabin soles that is not mdf, plywood, or chipboard and entirely foam core.Cabin doors are sheathed hollowcore doors, so worth the effort for the finish quality in a cruising boat.Not overly concerned about waterline, last boat was 10 tonnes, and for 42 foot boat, very good compared to production boat of similar size at 12-14.Even Seawind 1260 Sold as 8 is actually almost 13 when complete, I will be happy at 9 dry.11 wet

I'm watching another Australian boat build (Brupeg), and in a recent video, they planned on placing electrical
stuff on an hinged small door, but they had to change their plan because apparently, that wouldn't have gone
through inspection as nothing electrical can be placed on moving parts.
Maybe something to look into ?
That's valid on land too, not just boating. If your door has electronics, you need a special type of connector loom, with a special type of wire that has a flexible sheath. Extra cable, proper fixing points... unless you're forced to have it there (like warning lights, emergency stop) it's usually not even worth considering.
The woodwork will look so good.

You've proven that you can do, so don't second guess yourself on the wood work, it looks fine so far...I was a Commercial Electrician, but had great fun rebuilding the interior of our sailboat, and I think it came out fine, especially the Parquet dining table with disappearing brass base clamps for the Aladdin gas mantle kero lamp... Let your imagination take hold and create the home you and Janet will enjoy for decades to come!
