Thank you for tackling this subject, most enlightening. Interesting that the Peruvian angels have a sub-dorsal spot, but, contrary to your assertion another species of angel also has a very distinctive sub-dorsal spot. This is P. leopoldii from eastern Brazil. Formerly known by its synonym P. dumerilii. It too has a rather pointed snout. The page from Linke's book is also out of date, as P. eimekei was synonymised with P. scalare quite a few years ago. What this tells us is that the common angelfish has a wide distribution and has developed regional variations. To use the term subspecies would be rather erroneous, as no subspecies have been described so far, and we, as amateurs, do not have the qualifications nor the expertise to start calling every population with a slight difference a subspecies.
@1:23 you showed fish with black spots when you were explaining ,rest of the video you showed Altum with no black spot .was confusing . could you please explain .
Fish with the black spot was P. scalare from Rio Nanay which sometimes is given the name Peru altum even though they are not altums. The other fish were true P. altum.
What do you think of Simon Forkel's altums? Are they the same wild type from Orinoco? I think they are a hybrid of some sort. They definitely don't look like most imported wild altums from the Orinoco we see for sale. Let me know your thoughts on that. Always great to watch again your videos! Hope you would make a large system with wild altums from Atabapo one day!!
Thank you! Hope your Altums are setting well. I used to have Forkel's Altums. As a matter of fact, most tank-bred Altums in the UK a few years ago used to be from Forkel. They were quality fish, very hardy, certainly stronger than wild-caught. They bred for me many times (although I haven't kept the fry). He also used to have Altums from Atabapo and several other locales, which you could buy mostly in Germany. He was always strongly against inter-breeding of different locales
@@tropicalfishhub He recommends mosquito larvae for young altums. I did a search and found out that too much mosquito larvae can damage the internal digestive system, so I know then that it shouldn't be the primary source of food. I'm giving Hikari frozen blood worms and Hikari mysis shrimps as the primary source of protein and they are already accepting some dry foods, including some of the pellets based on insects. The brand Hikari sterilizes their fish food using a series of ultra violet, to eliminate pathogens. It's a Japanese brand. I'm already planning for a bigger tank. Yes, they are all doing great and growing, my friend. :)
The fact that scalare and altum are not found in same habitat is very intriguing and interesting especially from a evolutionary standpoint!!! South american amazon basin is just Absolutely fascinating from the reptiles, mammals , and birds, to the underwater jewels!!!
At that size it is particularly hard to tell difference. True albums should have upright and very long dorsal fins, Peru albums usually have short dorsal fins
Thanks! Actually, I have never seen Altums with permanently light stripes; they tend to change their colours depending on mood just like other angelfish
Hello. Hey would you consider " rio nanay " a true subspecies of scalare and what is your opinion on dantums. I've heard they are altum x scalare and I've also been told that they are actually just Peruvian scalare mixed with wild silver scalare. Thank you for your help. 👍👋
They are often described P.scalare sp. Rio Nanay, so we can say they are a subspecies! In my experience with dantums, most look like a color variety of rio Nanay, rather than true Altum. Some might be a cross between r.nanay and Altum. I never had them though
@@phillipausten3414 Lots of them were produced in Asia and sold as P.Altum, priced as captive bred Altums (so more expensive than wilds). As f2/f3, these hybrids lose most Altum features and are not distinguishable from scalare.
My marbled is only about 22cm height... got a short fin one that looks like a false altum plan to get some high fin flase altum or If I can find a good deal some true altums

Indeed. Altums can also interbreed with scalare varieties
I have just received 14 babys around 2 to 3 cm so thank you for the viedo this will help me to see if i got true Altums or if i got ripped off
