    I listened to nothing but Dre & Snoop when this album came out. A friend of mine introduced me to it and we had an old school "listening party" where we just vibed out and listened to this CD beginning to end. I didn't get it at first but as time wore on, this album became life changing for me. It opened me up to so many emotions and truths within myself at a young age. I recently "rediscovered" this album and have been listening to it incessantly as well as the Mellon Collie album. It's beautiful music and can truly tap into your soul. Thanks so much for listening and sharing it with everyone who doesn't know it. Good to discover you guys.

    "does Billy Corgan play any instruments or is he just the lead singer?" hahaha dude he played everything but the drums in recording this album, D'arcy and James Iha were too moody, drug fucked or both to lay down their tracks so Corgan went fuck it and did it all himself, fact.

    • @zachmate9376

      Billy played the instruments because he was a much more efficient and tighter musician that James and Darcy, and also very controlling over the decisions and overall sound. It wasn’t because they couldn’t be bothered or drugged up

    Billy Corgan is maybe second to Hendrix with what he added creatively to the possible crazy sounds of electric guitar, effects and amplification.

    • @rmaxtpmx
      @rmaxtpmx 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What?! Haha. Oh boy. Corgan's great, but he's not even closer to his like Gilmore and Page when it comes to creative guitar sounds. Morello, Vai, Dimebag...all experimental guys that came before Corgan. Not to mention Dick Dale pushing the limits of guitar application and wild reverb sounds to begin with.

    • @datapusher-
      @datapusher- 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@rmaxtpmx I think in terms of guitar effects, and experimentation in the recorded music he is correct. Dimebag had effects but it was more about tone and technique with him. I can tell you right now there werent over 20 guitar tracks on a Pantera record. Billy pushed the limits with feedback, delays, reverb, chorus, reverse delays, etc. Also, everyone hated Adore when it came out but that was literally the direction of music. Also.... Morello is a hack, F that guy. "ooo he used a switch as a gate on his guitar" others did that before him!!!

    I went to high school in the 90s and was really into GnR, Nirvana, etc., but I'll never forget when one of my friends gave me a cassette tape of some band no one had ever really heard of and had a strange name. I was walking home from school and thought I'd give it a listen. Popped it into my walkman and hit play. The first song was Cherub Rock. I was floored. I have never been absolutely blown away by anything like that. It was such an amazing new sound and style of music. So original and unlike anything else. Every song on that album is amazing. For most people depression is something you get now, and again. Some people are that way 24 hours a day. I'd say I've been that way since I was around 8 years old. I'm 40 now, and the only thing that changed is the amount of stuff that weighs me down.

    Billy gets flak because he has a giant head. His ego is pretty bad. I for one like the dude.
    Plus hes always sober and his story about him seeing a shapeshifter is very mysterious.

    Talking about Billy being a douche. I really think it was because he was so young, recognising his own talent for song writing and instrumental prowess. I mean at that age everything goes to your head, and his sheer talent on whatever instrument he picked up just snowballed into his personality. It's nice to see him more humble these days

    Picture this: consume everything about this song prior to the explosion… conveying the anger, sadness, regret… deception (or whatever) from a failed- and failed hard, relationship and hear the music actually going through something like the stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression then acceptance. Then the guitars start screaming at you and the world and it’s literally fucking sobbing and wailing in your ear drums. Want to see that portrayed perfectly… youtube search: Finowa soma. Read the description because I completely agree with his assessment. My most favorite song of all time! True art.
    Thanks guys.

    Great reaction guys. I loved the conversation at the end. Im the type of person who has always listened to “depressing” music. Its comforting for me. But, i can also understand the flip side, those who avoid depressing music because of the difficult emotions it can bring.
    There are so many great classic Pumpkins songs left to do. But, i would actually like to hear a newer song. They have a song called “Violet Rays” from 2012. It’s gorgeous and somber (like a lot of their music) and doesnt get enough attention.

    Fantastically accurate view. Billy corgan's music has specific feel about it. And his chord progressions can range from soft to dream and from angry to victorious. The smashing pumpkins always have been pretty much my favorite band. I leaned a lot of their songs on guitar and with the solos you can see how intricate they are and how technical the melodies are. It's a beautiful thing

    Also, Billy Corgan would switch between lead and rhythm guitar with James Iha depending on the song. On this particular album, the rest of the band had some serious drama/drug issues keeping them from recording, and Billy pretty much recorded every instrument but the drums and orchestral pieces in studio.

  • @bneal85
    @bneal85 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The studio engineer Butch Vig, the producer for Nirvana's album Nevermind, produced this album (Siamese Dream) released 1993; it was the second album he produced for the Pumpkins, their debut album Gish (1991) being the first. That signature sound from this song and Mayonaise, with the heavily distorted, heavily compressed guitars layered and stacked in an aggressive wall-of-sound style that completely saturates the soundstage, is something that Butch Vig worked with Billy to craft; Billy has cited Boston and Queen as sources of inspiration for this style of production.
    Sick to see you discovering them. Suggest checking out Hummer and Silverfuck, both off Siamese Dream.

    Soma is such an amazing song. I'd always have to turn it right up when listening in the car for the quiet first part, and then it would blast out when the distortion kicked in. There's a huge number of great tracks to react to, but if you want to see a different side of the Pumpkins then you could try Zero, Aeroplane Flies High, Bodies, Jellybelly, or An Ode to No-one. Alternatively, if you want a truely amazing song, then Thru the Eyes of Ruby is an absolute must.
