    'Paul Tremelling was just seven years old when he watched the Royal Navy's Sea Harriers leave their home base in Somerset to do battle against the Argentine Air Force in the Falklands War. Two decades later, he would join this exclusive club, one of an elite band of Fleet Air Arm fighter pilots, charged with standing in the way of Her Majesty's enemies.
    This is the story of what it takes to make it in the dog-eat-dog arena of fighter combat. In the cockpit or crew room, the pressure is relentless, the humour merciless. It's no place for the faint-hearted.'

    Tim, thanks for your brief comment on disabilities. My son is autistic, was diagnosed young, and sat in the doctors office getting the diagnosis I turned to him with "if you ever use this as an excuse not to do something, I'll come down on you like a tonne of bricks. A diagnosis is a label, it helps you understand why things happen in your brain. Most people don't have that advantage. It's your job to take the knowledge and run with it... never use it as a shield."
    He's now 17, smashing his A-Levels, and wants to be an electrical engineer.

    I hate to think that it's about 50 years since I left the Air Force. Seems like Yesterday.... Whie I marvel at how much hasn't changed I am pleased to hear how much HAS changed. For instance I remember someone of very senior rank bemoaning "Joint" operations etc, saying "couldn't trust a Joint Man, didn't know where his loyalties lay." Even though I was a very young wet behind the ears guy, that just didn't make any sense to me at all. I always felt that defeating an enemy by any means was the aim. Colour of the uniform was absolutely irrelevant. I really enjoyed this interview, many thanks to you both!

    Fascinating to eavesdrop on this chat. I've trained 25K practitioners in the management of large, complex defence projects, building stuff (Hawk, Tornado) for you guys to fly. Now approaching retirement having worked with MDs, CEOs, F35 instructors, Apache pilots, Nuclear sub captains. Like you I flunked my A levels , turned up at Blackpool careers office and got a BAC apprenticeship. 21 years building aircraft then 21 training/consulting. Majority of the stand out people were told by someone they'd never make the grade, so your thoughts on humility are spot on.
    Fail often, fail better. Work hard. Trust God.
    You're doing a great job Tim, keep it going.

    Tim, great work as always. Keep up the analysis and commentary. I decided to look back into your back catalogue of videos and caught this one. I read Paul's book when on leave a few weeks ago. It was bought by her ladyship for me mainly due to our interest in mil aviation and Mrs B having grown up in the same village as Paul and knowing he (like his father) was in the RN.

    Enjoyed this interview and love books about the RAF and aeroplanes so will buy this book. Wanted to be a RAF pilot as a kid, like the million you mentioned, but never did and ended up in the Royal Hong Kong Police where satisfied my flying ambition with paragliding and getting some air on my bikes!

    I was in 'big IT' with probably the biggest IT services corporation (US based and aggressive!), selling into industry, the public sector, and UK government. We didn't often 'no bid' but it did happen. The one I really agreed we should 'No Bid' was the ITT for the NHS computer system. We recognised that it would be like herding cats because the NHS does not have a single management hierarchy. Each clinic, each hospital, each consultant has their own hierarchy and their own way of operating. With no potential client 'Project Champion' who could represent the client and with the clout to say to the NHS 'forget how it was done in the past, this is how it is going to be from now on', that's not conducive to implementing a successful overall IT strategy. And so it proved with the company that did win that contract.... and failed miserably.

    • @FastJetPerformance
      @FastJetPerformance  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well dodged, Vince - very hard to please such an organisation as the NHS, micro managers everywhere.

    I remember “Fred” Frederiksen RIP propping up the bar in Illustrious in 1983 saying that he would always recount the errors and mistakes he made so that the sprog pilots on the squadron would be aware of some of the pitfalls before before they found them out the hard way.
