As a former US Army Special Forces member, a Polish speaking first generation American of Polish decent, and with a father with a similar background and childhood experience as Drago, this podcast hit so many notes with me and had me cracking up laughing several times with shared experiences. I've passed on so many episodes Jocko because I can't keep up with all the podcasts I listen to, but the second this one started playing automatically a d I heard the words communism and Polish in the same sentence I was immediately hooked and found myself rewinding multiple times to relisten to make sure I caught everything that was said. Drago is the man my father is and the man I wanted to imitate with the pride and gratitude of being an American and the dues I felt that I was obliged to pay for that freedom and privilege.

Brother. I'm American. I'm a former US Army Soldier. I went to Poland in 2017 to help with potential Russian Aggression. How Poland has Grown. The people were so humble. So nice. I felt welcomed. We drove through small towns in our military convoy for training. Had my windows down hearing all the Polish people celebrating. I felt proud to help the Polish people and deter Russia from re-doing what you all have fought to get. I want to go back. Polska Górą!

@Jan Pustelnik I understand your point but we have a double edged sword going on in America today. We have the far wing of one political party flirting with socialism not communism yet. The other side is flirting with nationalist populism stepping close to fascism. it is really weird here in both camps

    • @Cuffsmaster
      @Cuffsmaster 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@Jan Pustelnik "wish we could go back to our roots"
Our roots were ugly as well in many way and for all but a few men that owned land.
Only white men could vote and for the most part hold office. Woman could not vote. The Native Americans were not considered citizens of the County they lived in until the early 1900's. Blacks were slaves and after slavery they were denied basic rights in the South.
So if you were a white man you had it made in America from day one and may long for a past where you ruled the Nation on your own.
Now things are much better and we should be proud of the advances made but we can't also pretend we had a wonderful past for all that lived in America.

I just finished the intro. I can guarantee this story hits home to me...
My dad was a drill sergeant in the Polish Military. I was born in '78, my brother was born in '73...A few months after I was born, my dad remembers waiting in line for 3 hours for a loaf of bread. When he came home he told my mom something was not right. He went to Austria the next day to stay with a couple of his friends and 3 days later Martial Law was declared in Eastern Europe which was the start of the Solidarity Movement.
He came back from Austria and stuck around for 2 years to have some memory of me. He was scared of the future of living in Poland any longer but did not want to take action. It was my mom who convinced him to leave and find a better place for us. He says that it was her that convinced his mindset to do so.
Over the years we would get letters and packages from him. He started out in Austria but didn't like it there. Then he ended up in Canada and didn't like it there either. He finally ended up in North Dakota, Fargo to be exact. He went to some night classes to learn english and after some time it was noticed that he had the skills of Tool & Die Cast. After some time he chose 45 miles south Fargo, N.D. and he met up with an older gentleman who was a refugee from Czechoslovakia and this older gentleman was a sponsor for refugees.
Starting in '82 my mom started getting paper work from the consulate to get myself, my brother and her to U.S.A. and finally after 4 years of not seeing my dad, us 3 landed in Chicago in '84.
Just my story and did not mean to ramble. But I cannot wait to listen to Drago speak about his experience.
    Namaste'
P.S. The word they are looking for during the final thoughts is: "Valsalva Maneuver"
    Cordially, Adam

And the story about getting into lane to grocery store at 3am in the morning hits me hard. Remember exactly when my mom was getting up in the middle of the night and trying to get any food for family. There was one time when she came back from the store empty handed and me and my siblings we were getting ready for school we set by kitchen table my mom was fixing breakfast from scrubs and she was trying to hide her tears that she can’t feed her family! And that was reality for most of the people in my country! Any resistance means someone getting arrested and lots of people didn’t come back to home without any explanation to family.

In order to get food for his family, he worked in the camp shining boots and such. He would listen to the radio and heard that the Soviets were coming, 5 years later in 1944. This time there was no food nor work to be had. He escaped to Germany and spoke enough English to join the US Army and became a paratrooper. Im going to take the heat and say it: The Soviet Union's "version" of rule called "Socialism" was really just a dressed up way to say "Authoritarian dictatorship". DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISM (In Scandanavia, Canada, France, etc..) works. Taking care of the people in our *tribe* is what made humanity rise above the wilderness and become the dominant species on the planet. This whole "Fuck you, i've got mine" state of mind that accompanies hard capitalism is unnatural and destructive.
Tl;dr - The USSR was a piece of shit. Socialism works when property rights are respected. The USSR and modern day socialism look nothing alike. Be above propaganda.

Having any Government tell you what you can and can't do with your money is wrong, virtually almost all of the time. You made that money, therefore you will be less likely to waste it and hold yourself accountable. All government is corrupt to a degree, but centralism is defunct. You want a central government having more control over your money? You trust a corrupt state to be efficient and accountable for having your money/power? Not here. I'll invoke your own advise and say you be above the Socialist propaganda. Capitalism is the only system where the People have the most control. Every system presents some cons as opposed to pros, but Capitalism is the most free and the 20th Century's Communist/Socialist victims won't let us forget. That each State govern themselves more than the Federal Government is decentralized command of the people and you should know that's right, especially on this podcast. No one's more correct than the Boots on the Ground. Socialist/Communist/Democrats are centralist.

And by the time you realize they've become much worse, it's not so easy to turn it around..

He did so after his father was sent to a gulag for fighting against the Soviets during the onset of WW2. He never had the chance to go back home, he died only 3 years after Solidarity won the first free election in Poland in decades.

I was homeless after my service for 5 years and two years ago I just bought a house. Sure I have my share of problems but I wouldn't trade being an American for anything. If I can change my rock bottom you can too. Negativity is contagious why can't positivity be also?

I had the pleasure of teaching conversational English to a Polish gent. He had been a courier for the Polish Pope, after serving in the Polish special forces. When I met him he had already been an inventor and developer of listening devices, and was involved in creating lenses for night vision equipment. He brought a camera to my home, and had me hold up a board made of compressed nylon, black, and he held it up between us across the table. With the board, his face was completely blocked. When I pressed the button, there was no barrier -- it was like looking through a window. He was excited about the future. I was honored to visit his home and there he showed me bags and bags of lenses, each one valued at around 3000 Euros. His son, a game developer, sold a strategy game to the US Department of Defense for some 3 million dollars. Those poles eh. My son's best friend is Polish as well. The guy looks like a Viking out of Game of Thrones.
