  • This may be the best Spider-Man figure Hasbro has made but does that mean it's actually good based on its own merits or is it just good in comparison to mediocre, run-of-the-mill collectibles?

    Dude, the technical talk and absolute honesty is why I'm here. As much as I like so many other reviewers, there's a lot of confirmation bias out there where people, including the reviewer, just want to hear that the figure they paid for was worth every penny. So many times, I see other reviewers willfully overlook flaws in products or else they acknowledge the flaws and then make excuses about it. You both notice the flaws, explain how it could be better, and then ask the question, is this really acceptable? That's what a real critic does. Anything short of that is not a review. It's a product demonstration.

    It's a bit depressing that a YT'er/amateur (no offense) action figure designer has a better handle on action figure engineering and human anatomy than the pros over at Hasbro. Maybe we can get you out to Pawtucket to teach a class or something. Still looks like a really good figure, but the gapping at the head/neck connection seems to me an unforgivable flaw. This is the review I've been anticipating for quite some time now, and you didn't disappoint, Ant... I won't presume to speak for all of your viewers, but I for one love it when your critiques dip into the technical end of the pool; I find the engineering aspect of these little pieces of plastic crack to be endlessly interesting. Great job, brother!

    • @CouchCit
      @CouchCit 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're absolutely right. A lot of the issues these ML figures have come from being the products of mass-manufacturing process and prioritizing profit over artistry. Some ML figures showcase that they have a grasp on what looks and works best, but then you have different sculptors who don't do as good a job, the re-use of molds (which causes a lot of their problems), lack of communication between sculpting/articulation/painting processes, etc. At a $22 price point they just aren't gonna put much stock into overhauling those processes, especially when fans don't hold them accountable (case in point: collectors still buy figures with the horrible Hyperion body mold no matter how many times they reuse it).

      Some of Hasbros issues can be connected to budgeting, so Anthony working there would not instantly make all their figures perfect overnight. Not making excuses for Hasbro btw.

    Your edited images always make me sad, lol. Look at that, look at what this figure could have been if Hasbro had tried a little bit more...
    I don't know how to feel about this figure... I don't like the neck and I definitely hate that torso combination, I didn't like it in the 12" figure, I'm not gonna like it on this one.
    Looks good and has nice range, but it's still not "there" and I don't know if the nostalgia factor is a good enough excuse to own him... But of course, I have him preordered because, duh, nostalgia, lol.

    @fightclubify 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Thanks for that, Ant.
    A totally necessary and fair and detailed analysis.
    Hasbro....always seem to take one step forward and then two steps back.
    I know their remit is to do figures as cheap as they can possibly get away with, so every little improvement is augmented beyond the actual upgrade....but it doesn't change my disdain for the line.
    They have done some really excellent stuff over the years, among some total dreck, so for me that highlights the short comings, case in point the DEATHSHEAD figure from a few years back, which is still my fave Marvel Legends figure.
    You're bang on the money about the shoulders, and that neck ball joint problem....that was so damned weak. Why would they not care....ahh....we know why....people will buy these figures regardless of lapses in quality control.
    Sigh!
    If they put in ball joints at the waist for their line they would totally kill it. Hides the joint, increases range, improves look of the figure, maximises the natural look of the human form....it would really challenge the import market figures.
    Has me thinking that may be exactly why they do not implement this.
    If they upped the price by three of four dollars/pounds, and updated/improved the articulation, with attention and care, they would impress the hell out of everyone in our community, surely.
    At this moment in time I still rate NECA above all US companies for what you get for your buck.
    Really insightful video, and much thankings.
    Stay safe.

    it's an ok figure, but with all the years of producing so many spiderman and so many marvel figures,
    this figure should have been a 10/10,
    especially since a spiderman figure is mostly just a basic human body shape.
    and they could have copied techniques from mafex or figuarts.
    being ok is not good enough for a spiderman figure from hasbro.
    oh and before say it's good for the price point, just look at how amazing neca stuff is these days.

    Your critiques were very fair here. It's like with each new Spider-Man Hasbro comes so close to hitting the mark but messes up in some other, new way.
    I really wish they'd used the Snake Eyes body as a base for this figure. While not perfect, I feel like it would've given the figure everything we'd ever want out of a $20 Spider-Man, articulation-wise. And yeah. I've said it to other toy collectors before and I'll say it again; There is no excuse for any of their Spider-Man figures to not come with all three pairs of hands.
    Good review. Will definitely be picking this guy up.

    The engineering of action figures could make for a great series. Certainly 99% of other figure reviewers couldn’t make that video without having to do lots of research. And they would still lack that inside perspective

    Anthony, please get technical with us. That's why you're my favorite action figure critic. Tell me all about how big that peg should be, because I want to know 😉

    This is a really good representation of Spider-Man as he was drawn in the comics when I was growing up, making this my definitive Marvel Legends Spider-Man. I'm so happy that he's finally got eyes that aren't plastered over three-quarters of his face. Was getting really tired of that look. Also really digging the more compact, gymnast-like build. Somewhere along the line poor Spidey lost a lot of his muscle mass and was drawn/sculpted looking like a lanky, bowlegged nerd in tights. Yeah, I get that he's agile and lean but he's still supposed to have some meat on his bones. This new body provides that. I appreciate the new diaphragm joint and drop-down hips too. Very pleased with the way this guy came out. Thanks Anthony for such a thorough, honest review! Always grateful for the effort and objectivity you put into your content.

    I just realized this figure looks like the Web of Shadows video game Spider-Man more than an actual retro Spider-Man

    Man, I see your videos actually for the technical reviews you make, my collector friends keep telling me that I’m too nitpicky with the figures, because I love the technical section of this things, so I feel understood watching your reviews (and makes my laugh a lot of times😂), so I hope you keep the great job you’re doing, thank you 🤘🏻
