Around 22:47 in the video, you mention text bleeding into the "gutter". How should page margins be formatted in word or google docs? Like does KDP and ingramspark suggest adding an extra .5 inches to the side with the gutter? And how do you get word to alternate pages for the gutter?

A multiple books collected into a single volume (like the common editions of Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia) is an "Omnibus." The two terms are interchangeable in ebook-land, but not in print.

For once, it actually arrived in France at the same time ! Beta mode also, I've still got to test it. When I saw it on your video, I was like "okay let's wait a year or two" BUT THEY DID IT (we're always late for this things ; the company that acts in France for Ingram (which is their company I think but has a big partnership with our biggest distributor) JUST got hardcovers two weeks ago). Excited to see what it looks like! I'm planning a collector in the same style for November (but not omnibus, just my first). We have a lot of omnibuses (spelling?) in France also but they can be soooo thick! My Narnia one is huge. So I'm not a huge fan of omnibus but they can be really well done and cost less than all books so that's interesting. Good luck!
This is the first I've heard of KDP offering hard covers and I'm so excited! For my next book I'm planning on doing hardcover and I would really enjoy being able to put it out on amazon through amazon, I think. However, I think I'll probably still go through barns n noble for hardcover in other places. Personally, KDP not offering a dust jacket yet is not a problem for me, as I don't like dust jackets. Eee, I'm so excited!
You could put your cover art onto the actual cover inside like SJM did with the special edition of A Court Of Frost and Starlight! That way you can lower the page count and keep in the fan art!

Show us the proof copy!! So curious. Bethany, I've been following you for self publishing advice but now that I've read The Secret Gift I'm a genuine fan. I want to be able to buy the hardcover collection for my first read through of the main series!
Little tips for making the book smaller but still pretty : 1- chapter headers / you don't need that much space and you can gain a lot by reducing them (while still keeping a little so it's pretty). 2- In omnibuses chapters often start on both sides (so left also) because of space issues. You can consider it, you'd gain a lot of pages (for those who start with a blank page on the left). Sometimes they even start ON the same page because they reaaly lack space. I personally don't like it but it can be effective. 3-Reduce top and bottom margins, you'll gain up to 5 lines maybe per page, which is A LOT for a book this size (or you'll be able to have a bigger font size without making the page count explode). Hope that helps!

cream and I didn't know about the bleed thing for the inside of the book. Also, the test cover design would have been cool on the inside of the front and back cover. Cool to see you have your book at a bookstore.
cream is awesome! And yeah the bleed feature is one of the toughest formatting techniques but so rewarding! If KDP ever added that feature of allowing artwork on the interior cover that would be absolutely gorgeous - I don't know of any indie publishers who have that option just yet, but hopefully someday!

I want to do an special edition when my book turn 10 years, I want to add a lot of pictures, funfacst or whatever funny thing, but I can't do a coletcor edition because each book would have 100 000 words and are 6 books for the first arc.

A 7 x 10 book will be a similar size to the old composition notebooks. I personally love the size for journals, but don't know how it will feel as a fiction omnibus

It made me so happy I'm not the only one to whom books keep falling into their hands whenever I step into a bookshop. Two weeks ago, I went to buy my husband a book for Christmas. I had a particular book in mind. They didn't have it, but I still walked out with three other books, that just refused to stay there. I've ordered the book for my husband online later with another book for me because I'm not shall not pay for the delivery, right?

That's a cool idea, but sadly I don't think it would be very cost effective or doable, since it would require the author to also ship out each individual copy. (Right now, print on demand is all fully handled by the retailer, I don't do a thing.) So that extra printing plus shipping would get expensive fast unfortunately. It's easier and more cost effective for indie authors to just print hardcovers with dust jackets through Ingramspark or LuLu or Barnes & Noble at this point.

Hi Bethany, this is exciting that KDP will do HC, but I was told that bookstores and libraries only use Ingram Spark for ordering books since Amazon is their competitor (I realize KDP didn't offer HC before). Do you think stores will order Hardcovers through Amazon? Or should Authors still do their HC through IS?
Hi Lori! It's not because of Amazon being a competitor, it's actually because Amazon does not currently have a "Return" option, and most (if not all) physical booksellers require this before they'll purchase a book. I have my books in physical stores through Ingramspark because I check the option that allows booksellers to return books if they aren't sold, and so from speaking to a few different Barnes & Noble managers, they've told me this is a key factor and something they require. That said, I no longer work with Ingramspark, and I don't think many booksellers choose to carry indie books anyway, but every author needs to look at the pros and cons and decide what's best for them.
No clue myself, but can't an author presell on their website with a promise of signing the book, then when it is published, they buy X number for themselves, sign and ship them to the customer? As its an collection edition

I wish! That's not possible for indie authors in general as far as I'm aware. That'd be really cool too, but I think this "omnibus" style could turn out really awesome! :D
I really dislike white paper. I find it super hard on my eyes and not what I’m used to, since most trad published books use cream paper. Also, a tip to try and get the page count down if you do want to increase the font size a bit would be to reduce the size of the indents you have at the start of your paragraphs. I usually try to keep mine at around three or four letters in width.
That's totally fair! I think cream is really pretty but for some reason my books looked really strange to me in cream haha. And yep I did the indent, as well as line spacing, smaller font, smaller margins, raised the chapter headers and the subtitles and the first paragraph, etc haha... so many little things can make a big difference!

Haha great question - I am 100% indie published! But yes, like Anthony says, I have had some B&N book signings and those relationships allowed me to have my books carried in their stores! I was excited until I learned that the minimum page count for hardbacks is 72! Kid's picture books that need a hardcover are typically 24 or 32 pages! I wish KDP would fix this.

Hi Bethany, this is exciting that KDP will do HC, but I was told that bookstores and libraries only use Ingram Spark for ordering books since Amazon is their competitor (I realize KDP didn't offer HC before). Do you think stores will order Hardcovers through Amazon? Or should Authors still do their HC through IS?
Hi Lori! It's not because of Amazon being a competitor, it's actually because Amazon does not currently have a "Return" option, and most (if not all) physical booksellers require this before they'll purchase a book. I have my books in physical stores through Ingramspark because I check the option that allows booksellers to return books if they aren't sold, and so from speaking to a few different Barnes & Noble managers, they've told me this is a key factor and something they require. That said, I no longer work with Ingramspark, and I don't think many booksellers choose to carry indie books anyway, but every author needs to look at the pros and cons and decide what's best for them.

No clue myself, but can't an author presell on their website with a promise of signing the book, then when it is published, they buy X number for themselves, sign and ship them to the customer? As its an collection edition
They absolutely can! I've done it many times, but right now I'm expecting a baby so it's not doable for me. :)

Would you be able to do a collectors edition of all four books sold as a box set (like as individual books instead of one giant book)? (like how the Penguin Classics books are?) Or is that not possible with the beta hardcover?
I wish! That's not possible for indie authors in general as far as I'm aware. That'd be really cool too, but I think this "omnibus" style could turn out really awesome! :D

I really dislike white paper. I find it super hard on my eyes and not what I’m used to, since most trad published books use cream paper. Also, a tip to try and get the page count down if you do want to increase the font size a bit would be to reduce the size of the indents you have at the start of your paragraphs. I usually try to keep mine at around three or four letters in width.
That's totally fair! I think cream is really pretty but for some reason my books looked really strange to me in cream haha. And yep I did the indent, as well as line spacing, smaller font, smaller margins, raised the chapter headers and the subtitles and the first paragraph, etc haha... so many little things can make a big difference!

No inside information, but I would imagine she built relationships with local booksellers and convinced them to carry her books.
Haha great question - I am 100% indie published! But yes, like Anthony says, I have had some B&N book signings and those relationships allowed me to have my books carried in their stores! You really seem to know what your doing publishing your own work on KDP. I'm a one time only writer, and this is all new to me. I was excited until I learned that the minimum page count for hardbacks is 72! Kid's picture books that need a hardcover are typically 24 or 32 pages! I wish KDP would fix this.

If you are publishing kids books with pages less than 75, you will not be able to get hard cover. You can only get paperbacks or ebooks.
