    One other item. I also have bought the GX9. Took one look through the EVF and sent it back to the panasonic. One thing not mentioned, the EVF in the GX8 is large and magnificent.

    Hi Grant, totally agree with you about qualities of the GX8. This is my favorite M4/3 camera, it's size, handling, image quality, and weather sealing make it my first choice for out and about photography.

    I still have the gx8, the gx85, the gx9 and the gx1. The gx8 is my "workhorse" for stills, and I really love this camera. I mainly shoot when I travel, and the GX8 is ideal for that. The only disadvantage is that there is no ibis for videos.

      @@sdrtcacgnrjrc, you are completely right. I just came from a trip to Canada, and I used the gx9 with the extension of the body and the 20mm lens on it in the evening for some street shots. I had problems with my gx85, and was missing some controls the gx9 has. With my GX8 I am using mostly the 14-140 mm lens and the 7-14 mm lens. The last three days were a test of the weather sealing of the GX8 because it rained a lot in Montreal, but no hard rain.

    I own a silver GX8 - does everything landscape, sports, street, portrait. Best EVF of any camera. Tilty Rotate screen ftw. Bluetooth, All the Custom Buttons, Best M4/3 Built in Grip, Size, Weight.
    For an pro amateur theres no other choice

    Nice video, thanks. I've got 2 GX-8s. Use them mostly for 4K video. NEVER overheat and shut off, unlike some others (and my Samsung S21). The flip out screen also pivots so you can monitor when in front of the camera. My only problem is the plastic plug on the battery cover got brittle and broke and you can't buy a replacement -- there goes the weather sealed body. I've also got a GH-5, and it does autofocus better in vid, but it's **huge** in comparison.

    I have a GX8 and a GX85... but you seem to have missed a very important advantage of the GX8, which is the super EVF! A week ago I was in Venice and it was very sunny, I was glad I chose the GX8 :) I had a Fujifilm XE4 before but the GX8 + 15mm Lecia is a street machine!

    Hi Grant. Thanks for sharing. M4/3 is still a good option, as long as you choose the best lenses, especially Olympus ones. Notably the 12-40 and most of all the very impressive 75 F/1.8. The camera is compact, but most of all, lenses are. And that's a big part of the choice.

    Thanks mate, pretty much spot on... I do regret selling my GX8, although I also loved my GX9, which I also miss. One thing you maybe forgot to mention is the EVF which is far better than the GX9. Always love the unique swivelling function to use like a brownie box. Currently in a convenient relationship with a battered old A7 III - a great photo/vid camera but an ergonomic leper to the GX8/9

    Thanks for that. I've been Using M4/3 cameras from day one, along with Canon and Sony Full-frame cameras for serious stills and video, and the GX8 is still what I love using the most, and the camera that delivers the most consistent and predictable results. Images may not always be on the technical level of the Sony Alpha Cameras, but technically the GX8 functions more intuitively and faster, with less cost, weight and complexity. I've been considering upgrading to the G9 but I miss the flip-up EVF and Leica like feel and form of the GX8,

    I had an Oly lens on my GX8 back in 2015/16, was a fab combo! And I have just bought another one today on eBay, although it comes with the stock 12-42 lens. Always loved the swivel VF and saddened that Panny, Sony, Nikon and Canon have all abandoned launching innovative street cameras, focusing on spendy high spec large body cameras instead. Why didn't Panasonic retain the form factor for the GX8, but fix the few flaws, such as shutter shock (that I never noticed) and lack of a flash and release the GX9 as that and not what the GX9 was.

  • @jshanni2066
    @jshanni2066 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Excellent video. The Gx-8 is still one of my favourites - better than the Gx9 imo in some key areas - and I won't sell it. In fact, I just chose it (and the 15mm 1.7 ) for a weekend away in QLD. One thing you didn't mention that is a definite advantage for the Gx-8 is the EVF. Absolutely huge, bright, brilliant. Far superior to all subsequent Panasonic's other than the G9. Still one of the best, even 6 years on.

    • @jshanni2066
      @jshanni2066 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And I'll add - if Panasonic make a true successor to the Gx-8, I'll buy it. The ergonomics / features / size are a perfect combo. In fact, it's about the same size as the full frame A7c but with much better handling, so if Panny wanted to bolt the L-mount into it.......

    Still have mine - used it on the weekend with my 9mm at the Monet experience at Lume in Melbourne to be a little more discreet than my G9. I think that type of role and as a lightweight street photography camera with the 20 or 25mm is how I'll be using it going forward. The G9 is probably the better camera in most respects, though the image quality is similar. I have no intention of selling it any time soon.

    I loved this review. I’ve had a gx80 in the past, which I thought was fantastic. I’m thinking about picking up one of these. Although, I remember being put off by it as it reportedly suffered a lot from shutter shock despite the IBIS. But I’ve seen a few positive reviews, so I might have to give it a go. I don’t think I have heard the word fantastic used so many times in any other camera review I’ve see. And I completely agree they should bring that style back with the weather sealing and much better EVF, but I’d prefer a tilting screen to a fully articulating one (that’d be FANTASTIC)

    I started out with a Canon DSLR. Now I mostly shoot Fujifilm, but I recently bought a GX9 with the 12-32 kit lens because of the size, but it seems like the manufacturers stop creating these smaller rangefinder style of cameras, and at the same time, the users start to crave them. But I love this little thing, and will hold on to it for as long as it lives 😊

    Hi Grant - thanks for your new video about the GX8. I normally use a GX9 but have always been worried about its lack of weather sealing so, after reading a comment on one of your recent videos, I recently bought a GX8 as a back-up for use in harsher conditions with my weather sealed MFT lenses. Although the GX8 is a little larger it is, as you say, still very compact and well designed. I like the solidity (something about that metal feel) and handling very much, including the much better built-in handgrip (I use a bolt-on handgrip on the GX9 so the overall dimensions are not that different). Image quality and autofocus are also great - I don't shoot video, so for photography it's an ideal camera, and I also like the IBIS and image quality from the 20MP sensor. I got my GX8 at a reasonable price a few weeks ago, but noticed they were also starting to sell fast and were go up in price on the used market.

      The GX8 is a good sell at MPB. I have been looking for a silver one and haven't seen any in months. What I can say is that the black ones are selling good.
      I alreay have a GX9. I am very happy with it and I feel the 2 overlap. So I don't need a GX8 to be honest. But I really do like that camera look and feel

    • @bobstephenson956
      @bobstephenson956 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree about MPB - I always go first to them and they provided my (black) GX8. At the time I was spoiled for choice as they had 5 or 6 in stock, with silver and black versions in both excellent and good condition, but by the time it arrived the rest had been sold and since then the stock levels have been much lower. I haven't seen another silver one for a while.

    Obviously the GX8 and other Panasonic smaller cameras (relative to GH5/GH6/G9) are selling very good second hand.
    It is the proof there the need for such a camera.
    Fortunately Panasonic said a few months ago they are working on "a new small affordable camera". Lets cross finders.

    I recently traded in my X100T for a GX8 and some lenses. With how crazy the prices of the X100 line, I wanted to take advantage of this and move back to Pana/MFT. My dream is for Pana to do a GX9II/GX10 or LX100 III with just the flippy screen and not fully articulating.
