Dear sir, recently I have purchased a incentive Spirometer of Romsons to treat my COPD. As per instructions manual inspiration/ inhale should be done slowly and deeply. But in TH-cam vedios of different doctor / physiotherapist some of them doing inhaling rapidly so that suddenly three balls go upwards and touches up. I can also do like that. But I think it is not proper method ( rapid inhaling) to use spirometer for exercises. I do inhaling slowly and deeply and I can lift 2 balls for 3 seconds. Is it right? Please clarify the confusion. Sir while the blowing out exercise is it normal for the blue ball not to go up..parents are able to lift the red and yellow ball but not the blue one however hard they try. The blowing in exercise all three balls are up but in blow out this issue is coming.
I can lift all 3balls if I take strong breadth fast but when I try to take slowly only one or two balls are lifting is it a problem or its just we need to lift all 3 balls

Besides lung capacity, it'll help you get stronger with your respiratory muscles. I wouldn't worry about living with fear that deep breathing will get viruses in from mouth and nose.

Hi Ruchita, I suggest you focus on long deep breathing first. Steps: take a long breath in from the nose over 4 seconds, hold it in for 2 seconds and then breathe out over 4-7 seconds. Do it for 60 seconds. Focus on this. Do it pre-breakfast, lunch and dinner.
What if non of the balls go up...as my parents have recently recovered from covid and unable to see them rising after blowing in. Is it considered dangerous 😞😧😢😢

I’m a Physiotherapist and i would recommend people not to apply as much pressure as he applies, its okay even if you’re able to make one ball go up initially but there shouldn’t be exertion.. Don’t be so hard on yourself as symptoms might worsen if you do not keep perceived exertion in your mind
Surbhi (let me not call you she) is partially correct. Not all need to start with that much effort. Just get started. Start slow. Yes, even one ball going up is great. But where Surbhi (physio or not) gets it wrong is that the very basic principle in rehab is 'optimal loading', not 'no loading'. You need to make an effort. Again, one ball is enough to be raised. But gradually keep working harder. That's where adaptation happens, not where you are too comfortable. If it's tiring you, slow down. Next day, try again. As for 'exertion', if there is no exertion, not even one ball will go up. So, such terms like 'perceived exertion' sound all interesting and intelligent, but it is important to know what they mean. Again, another point to note in the video is that the device needs to be raised, it should be at your mouth level. Sit tall. And then do it. Let those lungs have the space to move.

Fear of breathing because of wheezing makes them develop a habit of taking shallow breaths, stopping them from using their lungs optimally. This exercise will help them to gain confidence to start breathing well again. We doctors don't appreciate the psychological angle of the disease enough. This 'toy' could change this kid's life for good and make her / him get on with life like all other kids around.

It’s widely used in running community and now during Covid era people are realizing it’s importance.
It’s also used post Covid to restore lung function.
